. >> 101 may be crowded into gilroy as people head to the gilroy garlic festival. the big news on the new bay bridge. the eastern span. engineers may have found a way to fix the busted bolts and at the same time get traffic moving on the bridge sooner than expected. kpix 5's linda yee is live on treasure island with where the plan goes now. linda. >> reporter: well, ken, maybe, just maybe, the new portion of the bridge might be open well before december. that's because the engineers have found a way to strengthen the bridge while that repair work on those faulty bolts continues. >>> reporter: it's a temporary fix, crews placing shims in to help stabilize seismic safety devices under the bridge. >> these green shims prevent the bearing from sliding back and forth this way. >> reporter: the shims provide the strength to hold down the bridge that was lost when the bolts broke. crews will still continue to install the permanent saddles around the broken bolts. but if the shims work the new bridge could open sooner than december. >> these wedges are going in to protect

gilroy 100 degrees shattering 98 degrees in 1999. tied temperatures came down 2 and 8 degrees due to stratus that developed an also a northwest wind that kicked into 20 but nevertheless triple digits in and around the tri- valley. 102 in fairfield. but down from 102 to 94 in santa rosa. down from 96 to 88 degrees in san jose. but wait it gets hotter. and for a series of days. excessive heat warming is in effect for red highlighted conditions. we have 11 counties in the bay area all but just about 3 san francisco, san mateo and marin county are encompassing this red zone. temperatures will be anywhere between 15 and 25 degrees above normal for days to come. leading all the way through the upcoming holiday. so anticipate low humidity, which can spark high fire danger and very minimal overnight cooling and the evening hours and throughout the daytime as well. liz, coming up we're going to talk about 109 degrees. a day to expect it and the community that will experience it. >> that's straight ahead. >> all right roberta, thank you. the h
