joining me now, paul henderson and defense attorney karen desoto. thanks for joining me on this big news day. pa paul, i'm going to start with you. the white house just released a statement from president obama which reads in part, i know this case has elicited strong passions and i know in the wake of verdict i know those mags hes may be running higher. but we are a nation of lawes and a jury has spoken. >> i think as a prosecutor i'm frustrated and i'm frustrated when whenever there is a victim and the family sufferes a loss. i think the bigger issue in this trial is the voice of concern from many disenfranchised communities that feel like the criminal justice system failed them. i've been a prosecutor and litigator for a long time. i believe the system works best when everybody is at the table and inclusive. in this case, i believe the voices we are hearing criticizing this case is because they didn't feel like all of their voice has heard. this was a very difficult case from the beginning given facts and evidence that the prosecution had. i thin

i have the great honor and privilege to introduce and to introduce karen harrison who is also receiving this award tonight. karen harrison is a registered nurse and clinic manager at the native american indian center in oakland and a member from a tribe here in california. she started out as a medical assistant in 1985 with the native american health center and went on to get her registered nurse degree so she's been with the health center for 27 years and 21 of those years she has been a registered nurse. [applause] karen has greatly contributed to the native american health center and sharing her knowledge and wisdom with the whole agency and this goes out to the community as well and serves as a chair on the advisory community and board member of the friendship house and coached american indian children in the tribal athletics program and known as the coworkers as the patient whisperer and when there is a patient that is angry or agitated she is always successful in calming them down. she is a mother and her with her family tonight. can all her kids wave? and she is here with her sis

i agree with karen that people are moved by individual stories. i filmed for over three-and-a-half years. i went to each of the training sessions. gideon's promise they get together every six months. i went to all of those and in between those trips i went to visit the individual lawyers. i thought if i can show people what their -- because i kept wanting to answer the questions why could anybody do this job. i wanted to turn that around and say how can you represent that people from the perspective of the people doing the work and what was motivating them and i thought it was to tell it through their eyes and show why they get so emotionally invested. the thing i would say is when you make a film, it can be very lonely you are by yourself with an editor and doing what you think you should do. so seeing with an audience what has been the most gratifying is people are rooting for the clients and in every screening somebody will stand up and say, it's young people and they will say, at sundance this kid stood up and he said i'm a public defender and
