i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. police spent most of the night at this home on wilson avenue just across from interstate 580, from fruitvale elementary school. today in the bay's christie smith is outside children's hospital in oakland where the two other children are being treated. she joins us now on the phone. christie, at this point what have you learned? >> reporter: good morning. i can tell you we're outside of children's hospital in oakland where we aren't seeing much activity in terms of family members coming and going, but what a horrible story. a grandmother and three young children shot, as you said, one of them has died. oakland police are telling us they got a call of shots fired activation around is 1:15. that's the system that alerts them of gunfire. they also got neighborhood calls of gunfire in the 3400 block of wilson avenue. that's the lower diamond neighborhood. police say when they arrived they found a grandmother and two 7-year-old girls shot, also a 4-year-old boy was hit. all of the children

into good morning to you. 5:00, i'm marla tellez, in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. breaking news in san jose. streets near japan are back open as investigators look at what made an officer shoot kill a pit bull, 3 trd street. >> reporter: good morning, we thought maybe, based on our conversation, would be winding down their investigation at intersection of empire and 3rd. that's still not the case. that intersection here still shut down. if you see where those squad cars are at, that home right there, that blue single story, that's where all of the attention is being focused. it was overnight that an sj pd officer went to the home to perform a parolee check at that residence. there was a vicious pit bull. the pit bull attacked the officer, bit the officer. the officer responded by shooting can killing the dog. that officer has been taken to the hospital. we spoke with one of his colleagues who tells us he's going to be okay. the parolee take noon custody. it's not clear what crime that person was out on parole for. as far as the investigation, and the response, they

i'm marla tellez in for jon kelley. >> and i'm laura garcia-cannon. we saw an early morning blaze for people in san mateo. a fire broke out just before 1:00 at the bridgepointe apartment complex. this is just north of highway 92. crews were able to put the flames out within an hour and a half. luckily no one was hurt, but dozens of people were forced out of their apartments while firefighters tried to put that fire out. those people now allowed back into their homes except for six apartment units. an investigator on scene tells us it appears the fire started in the laundry room from a dryer. >>> mixed emotions about the not guilty verdict in the george zimmerman murder trial are fueling protests here in the bay area and across the country. we have new video overnight showing protesters taking to the streets in new york city, shutting down a freeway in los angeles, and even burning the american flag in oakland. today in the bay's christie smith joins us live at the intersection of telegraph avenue and 20th street with a look at the aftermath. good morn

"today in the bay's" bob redell is live in burlingame overlooking the crash site which has been fairly active in the last few hours. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura and jon. you can see over my shoulder that workers have been out on runway 28l. they've been out there since last night cutting apart that boeing 777 aircraft that was once asiana flight 214. it's too big to be taken away whole. throughout the night a crane has been lifting the pieces out of that grass si area and hauling them to another site on airport property until the airport can find a permanent place to store the wreckage or have it salvaged. one reason this is an around-the-clock operation, the airport is rushing to get the runway reopened hopefully by sunday afternoon. with only three runways in operation, travelers have been experiencing delays and some cancellations since saturday morning's crash.
