nbc bay area's george kiriyama joins us with more. >> reporter: a lot of cats, we're talking 100 of them. only seven survived the fire. the owner and her dog escaped. the windows are boarded up after this morning's fire. tonight we talked with the owner who says she didn't know how this fire started. carol miller couldn't see. she couldn't breathe. >> we were just on our heels with this billowing black, thick, acrid, hot smoke. >> thanks to her dog bunny, miller and seven cats survived a fast-moving fire. >> if it hadn't been for her, we all would have died. it happened that quickly. >> reporter: but more than 90 cats did not make it out and died. miller's home in south san jose served as a sanctuary for cats who had been trapped on the campus. >> they're my life. they're my life. i'm okay as long as i don't think about the individual cats, because i still have seven kitties and a little doggy who saved all of us. >> reporter: miller had applied to san jose animal care and services to be a rescue service but had been turned down. a large part of that had to do with the number of cats in

george kiriyama joins us from san jose with more. george? >> reporter: jessica, the family is very upset because it's been a couple of months since danny was stabbed to death with no leads and very little progress. tonight, his wife michelle expressed her frustration in this exclusive interview. >> i just need answers. you know, i need justice for my hutz. >> reporter: michelle took us to the spot. >> there was blood on the fence and still some blood now. >> reporter: where her husband was found lying on the ground. san jose police say someone stabbed him in this apartment carport and left him to die. just a block away from his home. >> kind of hurts that i was so close and yet not close enough. >> reporter: two months after her husband died, michelle wants to know who killed him. and with no answers and no progress in the case, it's hard to move forward. >> very stad, very discouraged at this point because there's no answers, and nobody knows nothing. nobody is willing to help. >> reporter: the hardest part for michelle is watching her four

george kiriyama is live at the scene to tell us what happened. >> reporter: this is the front of the home right here, you can see that the front door is open and investigators are inside looking for more evidence. police say the suspect's gun was found inside the home. we're learning the suspect may have left the area before the perimeter was set up, they just finished a yard by yard search in the immediate neighborhood. what led up to this freemont pd says before 6:00 this evening, a man with a long gun rang the doorbell. when the woman opened the door, the suspect pepper sprayed her. while that wahappening, shots were fired, two children were inside when this was going on. they were able to escape along with the woman and the men. we have a description of the suspect right here, as a hispanic man in his early 30s. bushy long ponytail, goutee, tattoos above both eyebrows, he was last seen wearing a zipup gray jacket, gray t-shirt and blue pants. back here live, you can see pd arriving on the scene, as they continue their investigation inside. that's the latest here, we're live in fr

george kiriyama shows us where the trees are headed. george? >> reporter: that's right. let me show you the type of tree that will be placed to the east and west side of the toll plaza. this is called a canary island palm tree. and crews were out to inspect this tree. tonight, we talked to the owner, who has elected to give the tree away if it is selected. for 40 years, this tree had stood proud in the front lawn in santa clara. it was planted by her husband in the early '70s. >> it is sentimental because my husband planted it there. >> reporter: now, they want her tree. they want to relocate it to the bay bridge. >> we're looking at grown, mature, large palms. >> reporter: first, the gomez family palm would have to pass some health tests. crews chopped at the base. and then, cut off a frond. the project does not want sick trees. >> this has been an effective work that's prevented us from acquiring palms that maybe are infected with a pathogen. we're preventing that and getting clean trees. >> reporter: it has to removal test. no utility or gas lines must be near it. >>
