nick valencia is there. so nick, a lot of people turned out earlier today in miami for the rally, and among them, trayvon martin's father. and you spoke with him. >> reporter: good afternoon, freddie. hundreds and hundreds of people showed up here today. the rally took place between about 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. afterwards, the crowd marched. they thought very briefly about getting on i-95, which is a major freeway that runs through miami, but that plan changed. they instead went to the police station and ended upcoming back here. but while they were rallying outside, tracy martin was the he headliner. it was a very emotional time for him, very emotional moment as he spoke about his son, saying he would fight until the day he died to make sure the legacy of trayvon martin was not forgotten. he also said he would fight for the sons of those in the crowd. i spoke to him exclusively and he told me he was very overwhelmed by the support he was given. >> it's overwhelming. it just goes to show the love and supp

let's start in miami with our nick valencia. good morning, nick. i understand that tracy martin, trayvon martin's father, is expected to be there at the protest today. >> reporter: yes. he will be here outside the courthouse along with dozens and dozens of others. in fact, the first demonstrator showed up here two hours ago, two hours ahead of the rally that is supposed to start at 10:00 am here. what they are looking for is a couple of things. here in florida, they want a change to that controversial stand your ground law. they do not agree with it and they also don't agree with the verdict, that not guilty verdict which was given to george zimmerman one week ago today. they are also looking for federal civil rights charges to be brought against george zimmerman. they ver unhappy with with the verdict. more than 100 cities across the united states that will be holding rallies. our alina cho is in new york with the latest there with what is expected to transpire in new york. >> reporter: nick, good morning to you. the headliner in today's rally in

nick schifrin in spain for us again tonight. >> reporter: out of the charred twisted wreckage, somehow stephen ward walked out alive. >> i've never been to hell, but it's probably a pretty accurate description. >> reporter: ward was in the last car. he noticed on a display panel the train was racing 110 miles an hour, double what it should have been doing. then it started to happen. >> honestly, i just remember moving sideways. >> reporter: tilting to the side, he first thought nothing of it. then suddenly he was thrown flying through the air. >> the last thing i remember is the feeling of leaving the tracks and i blacked out in midair. a lot of people were screaming. a lot of people were crying. >> reporter: when he opened his eyes, this is him, bloodied and stunned. >> i've seen a picture of myself that they took. i look like the walking dead. completely covered in blood. it was truly gruesome. stephen was sitting at the end of this car right here, and you can see how blown out that side is and how consumed by fire. you can also see here the force with which this train hit the wall.

nick valencia is live at the church where martin luther king preached. when you're talking about ebenez ebenezer, i'm sure it was a moving service. >> it was a service of disappointment. 2,000 people who showed up, a majority of them were supporters of trayvon martin. the pastor, pastor paid tribute to trayvon martin. at one point, one of the most powerful moment in his sermon, he called up all the parishioners, 17 or older, they walked up holding hands. he looked at them and said, the world needs your voice. we're counting on you. he also went on to say the incident that happened between george zimmerman and trayvon martin happened for one reason and one reason only. >> trayvon benjamin martin is dead because he and other young black men and boys are seen not as a person but as a problem. isn't that what we heard on the 911 call? i see a problem. do you know him, sir? no, but i know he's a problem. what is he doing? not doing much, he's walking, but he's a problem. what does he have? skittles and iced tea but he's a problem. >> reporter: the general ser
