many of their crews from the redwood city fire department responded, as well. they are reporting that passengers were in need of burn treatment. that according to ktvu, a television station there in the san francisco area. according to them, some of the redwood city fire department, there were passengers in need of burn treatment there at the scene. >> gregg: redwood city is the closest large town or small city other than san francisco. it is just past the san francisco international airport as you head south along highway 101. this airlines has had a couple of major crashes since it was founded in 1988. one of them, july 26, 1993, a domestic passenger jet slammed into a hillside in southwestern south korea killing 68 people on board. that was bowing 737, it was down from seoul, south korea and it crash landed in heavy wind and rain about 25 miles from the airport. another crash occurred in 2011, july 29th, two people died when an asiana cargo plane crashed in the waters of southern coast of south korea after it reported a fire in cargo compartments. we don't k

kimberly tere joins us from redwood city with the story tonight. >> reporter: 280 was shut down for about three hours, the california highway patrol investigated the fatal accident, a public information officer tells us that that accident happened about 2:40 this morning in the southbound lanes of highway 280, just north of woodside road. he says a black honda clipped the rear end of a toyota suv, causing that toyota to hit the center divide. right after that crash, a witness in a silver jeep pulled over onto the right hand shoulder of 280 and stepped out to help those involved in the crash. he says as he was walking across the freeway lanes, he was hit by another suv. >> any time you see a collision on the freeway, we recommend people to not stop on the freeway and help, just call 911, let us know what is going on. and if you stop, other vehicles cannot see you and you therefore, you might be -- you're liable to get struck. >> reporter: the driver of that honda involved in the initial accident which prompted the good samaritan to pull over to help has been identified 25z 5-year-old charl

there in redwood city with more information on the fatal fire, brian? >> they, this fire from the very beginning over the weekend was very intense and this was the hallmark apartment complex here in redwood city, take a look, several floors and several units of those apartment complexes were completely destroyed but as you mentioned, 100 residents will be returning at about 8:30. this huge fire broke sunday at the hallmark apartment complex and several fire crews had to come in and douse it and they waited on their balconies to be rescued. they disclosed 20 and 3 firefighters were also injured and one manhasset died and his -- one man has died and his body was found in one of the apartments as a result of the fire. they believe the fire started where he was and it completely destroyed the third floor while the first and second are a complete lost as well. many will be escorted into the apartment and also to maybe get the tough which was opened by the red cross as well and again they will be here at 8:30 this morning. here live in red wood city, brian fl

we have breaking news to start the morning in redwood city. a man is dead, he was trying to help the victims involved in an overnight crash on southbound 280 near woodside road. they said the man saw two cars collide after 2:30 this morning. he reportedly got out of his car and was struck by an oncoming car. three other people involved in the crash were taken to the hospital. officials say it appears alcohol may have played a role in the initial crash which shut down all lanes of southbound 280 for several hours. all lanes were reopened to traffic about 30 minutes ago. >> we're following a developing story in san francisco this morning where one person is dead and another is clinging to life after a shood shootout in the tenderloin neighborhood. police say an officer sought two groups of men shooting at one another. at one point, the officer fired his gun at one of the armed men, but police say he missed the man. the person was -- one person was killed in the gunfire. another was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. it's uncl
