. >>> time now for a check on the weather with meteorologist sayaka mori. good morning. you've been keeping an eye on a storm that made landfall in southeast china. what's the latest there? >> yes, catherine, we've, watching a tropical storm cimaron. it made land fall last night as a tropical storm and it's still lingering near the southeast coast of china as a tropical depression. it has brought quite heavy rain. unfortunately, more heavy rain is on the way. we're expecting 100 millimeters but locally 200 millimeter, enough to trigger more flooding and landslides. it looks like residents in southern china will have to deal with more heavy rain because we have another tropical depression right here and this one could become a tropical storm within the next few hours or so and will likely it will the island of hainan tomorrow. we'll keep you posted on the storm's progress. more heavy rain can be found from southwestern china up to northeastern china as well as north korea. the heaviest rain will be found across the north. frequent lightning, thunderstorms and large hail a

meteorologist sayaka mori joins us now. what's the latest? >> yesterday, unprecedented amounts of heavy rain fell in western japan. i want to start off by showing you this footage. the warning level was the highest for heavy rain in yamaguchi, 381 millimeters of rain fell. yamaguchi, 351, which is 20% more than the average in july. one woman was found dead and several are missing. some 500 residents are stranded. this was the highest rain level in 50 years. now, the peak of heavy rain is over across western japan. but instead central japan is targeted by quite heavy rain. we're expecting about 150 millimeters of rain to fall in the next 24 hours. so flash flood is going to be a very big concern. and as we go into tonight the system is expected to sag toward the south so that will affect the northern parts of western japan once again. so more disastrous conditions are likely to happen, unfortunately. the same frontal system is affecting the southern parts of south korea as well as east-central china. lots of rain there as well. and a rainstorm

. >>> time now for a check on the weather with meteorologist sayaka mori. good morning. it seems there's a storm approaching southeast areas of china. what's the latest? >> yes, catherine. tropical storm cimaron can hit guangdong by early tomorrow morning. as a tropical storm, after that it will weaken to a tropical depression. winds won't be too strong but the main threat will be heavy rain upwards of 100 millimeters likely for the southeast coast of mainland china in the southern tip of taiwan. and these are the areas that typhoon soulik dumped rain, so the ground is already saturated. a rainmaker can be found north af west of sichuan province may get 100 millimeters of rain. the xwround is already very well soaked. it will trigger further flooding and landslides. as for japan then, we have an incoming low pressure system and cool air in the atmosphere and that is creating very unstable weather for the central and northern parts of the country. thunderstorms, gusty winds and even isolated tornadoes are possible. tokyo may see afternoon thundershowers, mostly dry, and t

. >>> time now for a check on the weather with meteorologist sayaka mori. good morning. it's refreshingly cool this morning in tokyo. quite a relief from all the heat and humidity we've been getting. >> that's right, catherine. it will be quite pleasant across the eastern half of japan compared to what we saw last week. it was stifling hot in tokyo. the highs remained over 35 degrees for four consecutive day, but on the western japan remaining on the warm -- excuse me, hot side for the next several days because the heatmaker is still in place across the south. yesterday the outflow from the high pressure brought quite heavy rain across western japan. take a look at this video. torrential rain plummeted parts of the prefecture monday. the downpour brought 160 millimeters of rain in a space of just three hours. one local police van got stuck as you can see in the video. and elsewhere, a road collapsed and swallowed up a car. two people in the car suffered broken ribs, another escaped with minor injuries. serious conditions out there. but the good news is that rain has stop

. >>> time for a check on the weather with meteorologist sayaka mori. what's the latest? >> that's right. it's going to be another wet and windy day across japan due to a stalled frontal system. it brought quite heavy rain and thunderstorms have caused scattered power outages. even tornadoes cannot be ruled out throughout the day. we're expecting about 150 millimeters of rain for western japan, 100 millimeters for northern japan, which is quite a lot for this region. it looks like the tokyo area will miss the worst of it where we may see some sudden bursts of showers. during the daytime heating thunderstorms and heavy rain and also gusty winds will be a concern over much of japan today. similar situation for the south of the korean peninsula and central china include iing shangdong provinces. but towards the front of the system quite dry and hot. heavy rain for the southwest coast of the indochina peninsula. very hot in shanghai going up to 37 degrees for the high on thursday. it will stay almost the same into the weekend. heating up once again to 30 degrees and shooting
