bob redell has more. bob, pretty cool, aren't they? >> reporter: yeah, the first time in a public space here in the bay area. good morning to you, marla. looking at those two sections of the berlin wall that once separated the east from the west, once represented the conflict between communism and democracy. they found a home outside the public library. one of the more unusual installation jobs for city workers and contractors, they man knewered these two towering pieces into their final resting place outside the library entrance. as you see, still doing some of that work, a process that required a lot of care, considering each piece stands almost 12 feet high, weighs close to three tons apiece. now, up until now, these historical artifacts were on display at a privately owned business park in mountain view the man who built that property brought the pieces over from germany in 1990, less than a year after the wall fell. last year, his surviving children sold that property to google. the internet giant wasn't flood keeping the piece on

today in the bay's bob redell is live with the reason for this change. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. later this morning, attorney general eric holder will address the american bar association. during this speech he's expected to announce a major new policy change on the war on drugs. holder will direct his 94 u.s. attorneys to stop charging people with low-level drug crimes that result in mandatory minimum sentences as long as the of ferns is non-violent and not tied to a gang or drug cartel. instead he'd charge them with less serious offenses that result in less harsh sentences that may put them into a drug treatment program or have them do community service instead. this policy changes comes about as the prison population is exploding. here are some numbers. since 1980 the u.s. population has grown by a third while the number behind bars has jumped by 800%. in a prepared quote holder says, quote, a vicious cycle of poverty, criminality and incarceration traps too many americans and weakens too many communities. however, many aspects of

this is where today in the bay's bob redell joins us with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: jon, this also happened less than a week of another attack on a woman that took place friday night. police will look at whether or not that attack was related. it was around 1:30 this morning when this woman was attacked near this park near lexington and main. police are not saying much. we believe her attacker, a man, might have had a weapon, perhaps a knife. she was able to get away. a police dog was able to track his scent. but lost it on the santa clara university campus which is just a couple blocks away. last friday morning, early in the morning, around 4:00, that's when a woman was sexually assaulted by a man, this was on the 2800 block of homestead road also in santa clara, about two miles away from where we're at right now. this man entered her bathroom window and then sexually assaulted her. they are still looking for that man and again it's not clear whether that attack six days ago is related to what happened here this morning around 1:30. report

today in the bay's bob redell was at the first scene, moved to the most recent shooting now. bob, what do you know? >> reporter: busy night for san jose police. good morning to you there, marla. this happened about quarter to 5:00 this morning, the second officer-involved shooting. it was a man who was apparently drunk -- new information from police -- who went into a safeway at san carlos and meridian and robbed it at gunpoint. police arrived. a few moments later they get a call that a man with a gun, they find out is the same guy, is over in this area, just a couple blocks away from the safeway at san carlos an lincoln. officers approach the man, give him an order to surrender. then this is what happened. >> officer located a suspect matching the description and made contact with that person. the person did not comply with the officer's demands, was displaying a firearm. the officer felt in fear for his safety and life and discharged his firearm in the direction of the suspect. the suspect was not struck. the suspect fell to the ground and the officers did take him into cus

bob redell is live on the scene has the latest details. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, jon. this is a two-acre brush fire on the other side of the national cemetery. it is out right now, just now matter of trying to figure out what caused this fire. what ix it so unusual is this national park is not known for a fire danger. given the fog and the mist in the air and the moist ground raises the question of how did this fire start. right now the fire department doesn't know. a passerby called in the fire around 2:00 this morning. it's located in an open space by the southwest corner of the cemetery just outside the cemetery gate, fence line. all that burned was brush. nothing else was threatened, no structure or stones or headstones. part of the challenge are that -- is finding fire hydrants. sf fire had to run trucks back and forth to fill up the high drantsz at our location, about a quarter mile away from the scene. a lot of driving back and forth. filling up with water and back and forth. they're filling up again right now i
