a fast-moving fire started along a freeway in fairfield. kpix 5's christin ayers talked with neighbors who lost their homes. >> a full-blown inferno and a residential neighborhood. people who live on marigold drive rushed here to find out if their homes had been spared from a fire that sparked along i-80 jumped a sound wall and spread to 40 acres. >> this is stuff you see on news. it doesn't happen to you. there were flames coming out from inside. >> reporter: she says her neighbors had even worse. these are the skeletal remains of the gray family's home. they were celebrating a wedding anniversary. 50 people were evacuated as the flames climbed a nearby hill and burned alongside i-80 forcing it to briefly close. some people fought the flames with their own garden hoses. others could only watching their belongings destroyed. >> sometimes you just kind of get the perfect storm that things are aligned, the wind, the fuel, the homes are aligned. when that happens you just kind of get that cumulative effect. >> reporter: firefighters managed to

we did see a fire in fairfield. up the road, lots of sunshine. vacaville 88. mainly sunny skies on thursday with a high of 87 degrees. our weather is dominated by a big area of low pressure you could see spilling a lot of moisture in the pacific northwest. rainfall in seattle, fall-like pattern for them. we will not see the rainfall. this counterclockwise swirl off to the west is critical to the forecast for the next several days. as the low pressure centers stays far away, we'll get an on shore flow. get the afternoon sun ship. if you're inland, this is why you will get -- will be around 88 degrees. you will have enough of the onshore flow to cut heat. you will get closer to us. when that happens, the rain will get past mount shasta, getting closer to us for the holiday weekend. we will all cool down by 5-10 degrees. the onshore flow, flow from the ocean will get significantly stronger. highs will remain close to average. the warmest day will be inland. then here's the weekend. barbecues want to get outside, soccer match for the kids. it will be cooler by a-1

nearly half a dozen homes are gone on marigold drive in fairfield. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran is in fairfield this morning where the homes were destroyed. cate. >> reporter: michelle, we are standing in one of the 15 homes damaged if not destroyed in this neighborhood. you can take a look, this one actually was just a complete loss. all that's left is a blackened framework of what used to be a garage. there isn't even a roof on this building. that's because these flames moved fast. these are shots from our kpix 5 chopper. it took minutes for this fire to turn this neighborhood into an inferno. the fire started in the grass near interstate 80 around 3:40 yesterday afternoon. firefighters got on the scene quickly but mother nature worked against them. the wind fanned these flames and carried them along the fence line to this row of houses. >> sometimes you just kind of get the perfect storm that things are aligned. the wind and fuel and homes are aligned. when that happens you just kind of get that cumulative effect. >> reporter: dozens of neighbors
