anna werner is in the flood zone. >> clearer skies allowed the military's air rescue to go into full gear. more than 2,200 people have been plucked from towns and homes cut off by rushing water or washed- out roads. we went with the search-and- rescue team as it went door-to- door outside of boulder. jeff hatcher was looking for people who were trapped or holding out. you think they need to get out? >> we would prefer that, yes. >> otherwise, what are they facing? >> winter coming. we don't know the destruction that's done, we don't know what winter will bring, we don't know that they will be able to get out. >> i've spent four days in bed with anxiety and not knowing. >> a rescue team from utah found ellen hatfield stranded with her pets. you think you should leave? >> i probably should, because the roads are down. we have no way to get medications. food for the animals. >> the state estimates at least 30 highway bridges have been destroyed. another 20 are seriously damaged. it will take months to repair. this man was spotted in weld county. his home an island in a coffee- colored s

anna werner is there. >> reporter: the water that rushed through lyons might have claimed many more lives were it not for dan farber's obsession. >> so you have two rivers that have flooded in the past come together right here downtown lyons and to me that was very concerning. >> reporter: mountain runoff from 225 square miles collects right here, but lyons did not have a flood warning system. barber was the county sheriff sergeant assigned to the town. he spent years trying to convince town leaders to spend $25,000 on new warning sirens. >> i made a three-foot by three- foot cookie dough map by overlaying cookie dough as mountains and ridges and valleys over the town map and showed them that this is how the water's going to flow and how it will cut off certain parts of town and they got it and that's exactly what happened. >> reporter: the sirens were installed in 2008. on thursday, they woke up tammy grabowski's family. >> knew the sound, few something was going on, was alerted immediately. >> reporter: nicholas angelo was former mayor of lyons. >> i know there were so many people that

anna werner is in longmont colorado. anna, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, charlie, norah, and gayle. this creek behind me is normally a lot smaller but you can see how much water is here and how fast that water is moving. the impact of the strength of these flashflood floodwaters they can pick up these tree uproot them, and carry them downstream. the impact of those floodwaters, 19,000 homes damaged. the catastrophic flood zone in colorado is nearly the size of the state of connecticut. sunday the rain continued. more fell on boulder in the past few days than in the entire year before the storm. road closures have cut off hundreds of colorado residents from rescuers and airlift operations are in many cases the only way to reach them. one national guard spokesman says this is the largest air rescue operation since hurricane katrina. even officials are shaken by the magnitude of the tragedy. but they're confident colorado residents can recover. >> inch by inch mile by mile community by community, they're t

anna werner is live in lyons, colorado. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anthony and vinita. the question for state officials are about oil spills. there are thousands of oil and gas operations and wells, fracking operations here in colorado, and now there are some oil spills. some of them come from storage tanks. others from pipe leaks. and some have been cleaned up. some have not been cleaned up. and the question for authorities now is what could be the impacts of those. the state is tracking those bills, trying to get a sense. but some areas are still inaccessible so answers are sometimes off at this point. meanwhile residents are trying to cope with damage to their communities. the town of lyons here that we're in this morning is virtually deserted because there are virtually no services no power, no water. people are trying to put their lives back in place. back in lyons the river is still running fast and strong and it actually moved itself from running under the normal bridges and literally cut a new channel

anna werner is in boulder, colorado. anna, good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning, charlie, and good morning to you, norah. and, yes, some people here in the community are starting to ask whether they should be worried about leaks from the many oil and gas operations here in this region. we got a look at some of those operations for ourselves. in welles county, colorado, bright green liquid sits in a pit below a tank tipped by floodwaters. video was taken by activist suzanne spiegel and her group frac-free colorado. >> we, you know, walked up to it and at first it was just the smell that hit me, and i literally immediately became lightheaded. >> reporter: so far the state has identified ten spills caused by the floods including one that has sent over 5,000 gallons of oil into the south platte river. >> not that any pollution is a good thing -- >> reporter: at a press conference thursday, colorado's governor says the spills weren't excessively large. >> the several small spills that we've had have been very small r

anna werner is there reporting. >> reporter: the water has taken over here. this is nothing compared to the damage in the town of lyons 16 miles north. the damage is so extensive, authorities won't let us in to broadcast live. business owners were able to get the first look yesterday for a short time. the trail of destruction is hard to miss in the town of colorado. when flood waters came through last week the community took a direct hit. some areas are unrecognizable. >> it's amazing how different lyons looks in terms of what this looked like before. whole river patterns have changed. >> reporter: roughly 75 homes were damaged or destroyed in at least one part of town. the sewage system and bridges were wiped out. >> it was absolutely one of the most beautiful places along the front range. we called it the pearl of boulder county. angelo is the former mayor. >> reporter: what do you feel like when you look at the town? >>> it's horrible. it's devastation. you see it other places but don't think it's going to hit home. when it hits home it really affects you.

anna werner is at boulder municipal airport. that's where helicopters are expected to take to the skies again today. anna, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, charlie and norah. the search-and-rescue helicopters you see behind me are getting ready to go up for a second day of airlift operation. it's the largest airlift operation since hurricane katrina. hundreds are still unaccounted for and what emergency response officials are worried about is making sure they're taken care of. as parts of colorado remained cut off by floodwaters monday nearly two dozen military helicopters fanned the state, looking for anyone trapped. a break in the weather allowed crews to scour the area plucking people to safety along with their pets and belongings. chinook helicopters rescued more than 200 people from the mountains. many were delivered to the ymca in boulder where they either checked in for the night or met with loved ones. >> i was so worried. >> i'm sorry. >> reporter: reggie, a 35-year resident of the rockies, was airlifted from he

anna werner looks at the battle. >> looking good. >> reporter: 45-year-old andrea sloan is fighting a seven-year battle against ovarian cancer and losing. >> i've had several rounds of traditional chemotherapy. i've had two full rounds of radiation. i've had five major surgeries. >> reporter: all of them in seven years? >> yes. >> reporter: now sloan's oncologist, dr. charles levenback said she needs something new. he thinks her chances for survival is an environmental drug called bmn 673 made by biomarin pharmaceutical. >> andrea needs that it get her back from the relapses. that's why it's so compelling to find her something novel that's different from what she had before. >> reporter: the problem, sloan can't get into a clinical trial for that drug. but the fda does offer another route for patients like sloan, something called compassionate use. which allows drug companies to offer experimental drugs outside of clinical trials for desperate patients. this offers new hope for you? >> awe amazing hope yes. >> reporter: the company said no. in an e-mail to sloan chief medical officer
