one is the federal and state grants that come into the city to city college. so this is actually based on their most recent financial statement for 2010-2011. in that year they received 188 million in grants. the other impact we looked at was on city employers. so, we were able to match students graduating from city college programs and the most recent data we had was the academic year of 2010-2011 to the u.s. department of labor data to match those programs. in many cases they were a match to those programs. in some cases we had to estimate. so in last year in 2011 we are comparing more than 2200 graduates that had and were as degrees that were not going on to school or some kind of certificate which is a licensed vocational program which is a specific skill. so for 52 programs, i need to say also about u.s. department of labor data. it also covers marine county and san mateo county. we included these areas so we are looking at the whole picture. using those three schools, in 4152 programs, job demand, annual job demand far exceeded the skills labor that was

we now have over 40 cities that have joined us. in 2011 we partnered with gray area foundation on a series of hack-a-thons, 10,000 attendees, and created nearly 30 applications all being powered by open data. now in 2012 we have our legislation that you heard about. as you heard, we announced the chief data officer. we have a network of open data coordinators within each agency. and these coordinators, their primary responsibility is to provide insight, is to provide transparency into the data sets that they manage. and that's really important. we want to make sure that you guys have a clear understanding in our community about the data that we manage so you can tell us where we should be going next in terms of opening up our data sets. we also are doing some structural changes so that open data is really the default position for our city. we're making sure that data belongs to our city, not the vendor. and second, we're making sure that any software that we buy or build hatx a public api or some equivalent. we don't want to be hel

(applause) >> all right. so, i'm up here to present the graffiti-watch volunteer award and the graffiti watch program is a program that started about four years ago. over 300 people enrolled in the program, and about 180 of very, very active people,. very, very active means those people go take time out of their busy day to go remove graffiti and make san francisco be graffiti-free. and in that 180 there are very, very few that get up early in the morning, early -- i mean, 3:00, 4 o'clock to go and make sure the neighborhood is clean before everybody wakes up to see a nice clean street or nice clean wall. and the awardee tonight and the winner is larry win ham, if he would come up and receive his award. a big thank you to him. opportunities in our city, they need to be a part of our city. and it's not just about giving out free gifts or giving out free turkeys or giving out free anything. it's about what type of job opportunities, what type of internships, what type of commitment are you going to have to the most vulnerable residents of our city? how are we going to impact lives? you're basically -- this is a great economic opportunity maybe for you and the city, but how does this directly impact residents of the city? so, i think we have to do a better job in making those connections. >> let's talk a little about the issue of sports, the role of sports in the city's economic future. are you supportive of the plans for the new warriors stadium? >> i'm supportive of a plan that includes the residents of this city. specifically, with the warrior stadium, i think it could be a great opportunity for san francisco. but i want to make sure that in the agreement that there are some requirements that make sure that people are not just employed for construction opportunities. t

for our city. the college serves and huge a diverse population with about 1/3 of the population being asian or pacific islander and 21 percent being latino or people identified of hispanic or again. that's over 50 percent are either pacific islander or latino of the college population. somewhere between 41-45 percent all students at city college take non-credit courses. let me repeat that. the non-credit student population is 45 percent of all students at city college. 16,000 are english learners or basically new comers, immigrants to our city. 18 thousand students at city college are 50 years and older. they make-up the proportion of that non-credit population. people of my age and older tend to be that population and some of the most vulnerable with the non-credit course testimony at the college. there is there is no other room at other colleges. taking 2-year programs at for profit colleges could require students to pay up to 17 times more of the cost for city college. so there is a huge economi

college if saving city college means having a city college that no longer looks like what city college has been. so, supervisor avalos talked about the language programs. it's the adult education classes, the job training programs, the work force development initiatives. it's the second chance programs for formerly incarcerated youth. it is the bet van center that helps so many vets not only get training, get jobs. it's the guardian scholars programs that serves former foster care students with academic and nonacademic support. it's the programs addressing senior help. it's helping students transfer to four-year colleges. it's preserving lower cost higher education can which is -- city college is the only way that so many low-income folks can go to college. it's maintaining the special community-based campuses like mission campus in my district that serves 8500 students, 70% of whom are immigrants. i do think that we need to continue these hearings and i will end with this, that my hope and what i would like to do as the district 9 supervisor is at the next hearing that we have -- and

this is what innovation does in the city. it gets everybody to actually work at even higher levels in government in a public-private partnership with companies like google and all the rest of the wonderful members of sf city to do what we can do and to do more than we think we can. in order to bring benefits, bring equity, bridge not only the digital divide, but perhaps bring the whole innovative spirit to every community in san francisco. this is what i think this wi-fi effort of our 31 parks is saying. and the nice thing about it is that when you study what we're going to do here and accomplish with the 31 parks, and that we along with our technology partners, our communications partners, our department leaders, new ones as well as old ones, are saying this is just the beginning. this is literally the beginning of a continued effort to innovate, innovate, and innovate. and i like what mark said. not only are there no strings attached. really the benefits are targeted at our residents and our visitors, but that the only thin

this is the transportation for the city. it's clearly a billion dollar investment just in our bus fleet. you heard some of the features today. this has additional safety features both on the outside of the bus. it has state of the art cameras, not only to help with toll lanes and exclusive transit lanes only but to see everything on the bus. cameras on the outside to help guide the drivers as numerous people have said we've worked closely with all the constituents and stake holders to design this bus. the number one cause of munis delay. we are having these buses roll on the streets as opposed to hit the streets. we want rolling. this is a big step for us but only the first one. as you heard of other programs the help of the mayor, his administration, our board analyzed -- and the leadership of ed. this is going to make a difference in moving us forward. i will be happy to tell you more about the buses

city college is a staple of education within the city. we don't only want to see city college saved. we want to see city college improved. we want to see city college addressing some of the historic issues of racial inequity, the achievement gap for students of color, especially african-american students, the amount of time that it takes students to graduate when they get into city college. so, we were really would like to see you take leadership in bringing the community together to build more support around saving city college, while most definitely including the fact we need to strive to improve the situations at city college that aren't working for students to make them successful. there's a lot of pressure to have a narrative that doesn't include equity and i want to most definitely make sure that as we continue to speak about this that we talk about equity. we put students at the center of the conversation and really make sure that it's guided by what's going to make sure students get the most out of their education at city college.

is a wealthy city. we spend a lot of money on social services in our city. ~ but why are these social services not impacting people's lives the way it's changing people's lives for the better? i want to make sure that we work with residents and we work to help them grow within public housing and to not be plitioned out of the city as a result. i think that's one of the big issues. the other issue is connecting people to job opportunities. long-term employment, stable employment, employment that gives people dignity, that gives them pride. i mean, everyone wants to take care of their family. and sadly, people are sometimes pushed into a life of crime because that's the easy route to obtaining money. i mean, it was really easy for me as a kid to choose to sell drugs because everyone around me was selling drugs. wasn't easy for me to get a job because i didn't have a lot of examples of people working other than my grandmother who was working as a maid, or other folks i saw working at the grocery store. so,

cities part of the success. it's by each of you in this room to keep invest in our city in businesses and innovative ideas. but also investing in our schools and in our community and in our neighborhoods and most importantly most importantly in our people. in particularly our young people. san francisco is the greater city in the world because we're deprives and innovative but we cannot be successful unless we work together on our critical challenges so i ask you to work with me help save city college. help us rebuild and reanything else our public housing no more poverty housing. help us invest in our schools with better education for our children and continue to help our young people. for those of you who helped in our summer programs just two days ago we had a goal of 6 thousand not only did we get it done but we created and gave out and established 6 thousand 2 hundred jobs for our kids that's reach. now let me give you fair warning now that we've met our goal public-private partnerships like summer jobs plu
