the speaker of the house, john boehner, has enough republican support to get the 217 votes that they need for a majority. normally it's 218 but there's a vacancy or two. let's say he gets the 217 which he almost certainly will get, that's not going to be all that dramatic. what the drama will be, what happens next. it goes to the senate and similar -- exact legislation keeping the government funded for a few months, but also defunding obama care will not go anywhere in the senate, and so the drama is what do you do next. they have until september 30th, because the government runs out of money starting october 1st, the start of the new fiscal year. so what happens after the senate passes a very different continuing resolution to keep the government funded and they have to work it out between the house and the senate, who blinks then. that's where the drama will be. >> okay. so as i understand it, what happens today is that this continuing resolution gets bound with the concurrent resolution, with the defunding of obama care, they punt over to the senate which strips it all apart anywa

what has the situation told you about john boehner and eric cantor? >> they listened to the members of the house that elected them. we have a very diverse congress on the republican side. you see over 230 members very serious. brought forward, a united our conference. it was a lot of conservatives that put these ideas together. we worked with our conference and a rate that i think that's only united us that you had a bipartisan vote on the bill. it will be responsible in funding government while also tackling all of the problems the president health care is creating. >> how many votes are there when this comes back? clean continuing resolution at the funding levels, how many votes, republican votes? speculate. going to they may take this bill. there is a public outcry going on. the problems that so many of the they go back do home and say they're going to keep it in place even though the president has admitted it is unworkable? back, andg does come there are a lot of legislative tools we have their debt available. vcr is one. -- th ise one. we willc m

so this is the two wings of the party that john boehner is dealing with. but big picture, assuming this goes planned with the republican house leadership, yes, this gets kicked back to the senate and they have promised to reject it immediately. and we are back at square one, back in limbo. and again, i think this is important to underscore. i have not talked to any senior republican sources who think it makes sense procedurely or any other way, to de-fund the bill, by midnight, which means we'll see a government shutdown if all of that goes as expected to. >> so john king, what do the american people want here? you know, this is an interesting issue, they don't want the government shut down, and by most polls don't like obama care, so what do you think? >> they think it would be a big mistake to shut down the government. usually in our politics we have a roughly divided country on so many of those issues, look at the bad thing, 68%, seven in ten americans say a bad thing to shut it down for a few days. the number jumps if you say to a few weeks. so dana's
