ktvu's ktvu brian flores at lincoln high school where students are mourning the loss of their classmates. >> reporter: good afternoon. we understand they held a special ceremony for kevin san. news media not allowed in the school but students say it's a different type of mood today considering now we know who the main suspect is. this is 58-year-old jennie zhu, the woman accused by police of traveling at a high rate of speed for several blocks. they say close to 80 miles per hour before she crashed her silver mercedes into a mini van that killed 16-year-old kevin san and injured his mother and sister along with three others in another car in san francisco. we have not been able to confirm she was -- we have been able to confirm she was taken into custody on bail after the incident but posted bail, was released on saturday. 11:00 a.m. we did stop by her house but nobody answered the door. neighbors say they barely knew her. it's not clear when her arraignment will be but she faces vehicular manslaughter charges. police also say she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she

ktvu news has obtained emergency radio communications. they reveal just how quickly the fire changed from a manageable grass fire to an out of control wildfire. eric rasmussen has those recordings. they show the first firefighters briefly canceled help coming their way. >> reporter: in a matter of hours, hundreds of firefighters launched an all out assault to stop a wildfire. just after the initial call, around 1:00 p.m. sunday, the first cal fire team seemed to be dealing with something much more benign. >> a quarter acre. >> one quarter acre, mostly contained. advising the rescue cancel. >> reporter: in a recording of communications provided to ktvu, you can hear some other units told to proceed without lights and sirens. a neighbor nearby told us he thought the first was out, but at 1:37 p.m., things change the. >> we received several calls in the last minute or two, people advising that the fire has possibly jumped and is over the hill. >> it is approximately half an acre right now. >> pretty clear at this point, that we had two separ

ktvu channel-- ktvu's jeanine de la vega joins us life. santa cruz has one of the high o highest rates. >> reporter: truancy starts as early as elementary school and if it's not corrected, it could lead to kids actually dropping out of school. we don't know the exact attendance numbers at this elementary school but we do know santa cruz county has one of the highest truancy rates in the state coming in at 30% n. a new report released today, state attorney general pamela harris says attention dance in schools -- attendance in schools in california is at a crisis level and it's jeopardizing our economy, safety and children. the department of education finds one out of every five elementary schoolchildren are reported to be truant in the 23011-20 owe 10e 20 -- 2011- 2012 school year. they're considered tardy or truant 30 minutes or more. students are more likely to struggle academically and drop out in later years. there is a correlation between the number of criminals and crime victims and high school dropouts who start struggling academical

ktvu's john fowler is live where he found another fire hazard today. john? >> reporter: that's right. right now the winds are coming out of the west. they picked up in the last few minutes. i will tell you as the fire conditions, the red flag red flag warnings begin we will expect problems from power lines among the trees. >> reporter: trees in higher elevation neighborhoods at risk of snapping power lines. >> the trees swing into the power lines and under the right conditions that could cause a fire. >> reporter: a tree service crew just ahead of the winds removed this dangerous pine. >> reporter: another crew climbed into her red woods to stable them. >> mostly what we like to do is preventative care so there won't be problems. >> reporter: we spotted several trees with branches within the 10-foot clearance of power lines. we notified pg&e. inspectors will be here tomorrow. 96 trimming crews already scheduled. firefighters say the area has similarities to the firestorm of 22 years ago with trees, brush and dry conditions but homeowners can protect themselv
