live in sanjose, marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, marla. we're also following another overnight breaking news storien san jose. officers on the hunt for a hit-and-run driver involved 18 multi-car crash in san jose. that happened this morning an 880 near bascom avenue a. man was driving a jaguar on the freeway when he lost control and crashed. that set off a chain reaction. officers tell us one of them is being investigated for driving under the influence. the driver of the jaguar ran off and is still on the run. >> we have new video of a hayward police car rammed by a driver as he tried to escape from offers. they noticed a stolen vehicle early this morning but when offers tried to pull it over the driver rammed the vehicle and took off. the driver and a passenger ditched the car, they tried to run. they ultimately were arrested. one of the officers we can tell you about suffer a minor injury while trying to catch one of those suspects. >> investigators are trying to figure out why a man went on a shooting rage, killing 12 people. >> u.s. l

i'm marla tellez. we now know a home invasion robbery on the peninsula that ended in gunfire has turned deadly. it happened at a home in san mateo near the corner of lodi avenue and norfolk street just off highway 101. nbc bay air yoe's arturon&o santiago, police say one is dead, one is in custody and a third is on the run. >> reporter: that's right, marla. police still have lodi avenue blocked off to traffic as they continue their investigation. take a look behind me. the gun fight took place in the brown home about a half block down the street from our location. at around 11:30 last night police were called out to the home on the 1500 block of lodi for ah2u(q invasion robbery. three suspects had entered the home and confronted four people inside at the time. a gun battle broke out between the suspect and a 24-year-old man. that 24-year-old was shot, but the wound is not life threatening. police found guns, bullet holes at the scene. they believe two were shot during the exchange of gunfire. some sho

. >> i'm marla tellez. an update to breaking news in the east bay where fire crews are still on the scene of a fire at a used car lot in martinez. they put that fire out less than an hour ago. now an investigation is under way as to how it started in the first place. "today in the bay's" christie smith is on scene. christie, what's the damage out there? you said about eight cars damaged in the flames? >> reporter: eight cars and a couple of buildings, too. it's pretty bad. a fire investigator just arrived on scene. it was only within the last 30 minutes or so that they were even able to get close enough to take a look around which is what he's going to be able to do this morning because this fire was just so intense. investigators are telling us that when they arrived, flames were 30 feet high, reaching up to the power lines outside of this used car lot. the fire started about 3:15 and spread very quickly. there are three buildings on the property. there's the car lot, an office and also a residence on the

christie, good morning. >> good morning, marla. kind ofd hard to believe that the earthquake that damaged the old bay bridge in the first place happened 24 years ago. tomorrow for the first time delivers will finally be able to drive on the new span. there was talk of it possibly opening before 5:00 tuesday morning. a bridge spokesperson says it's just too early to say that yet. but as of sunday, about 80% of the final work on the $6.4 billion span that was built to be more seismically safe is done. the roadway connector to jer ba buena island and treasure island is completed. contractors continue to grind up pieces of the old bridge to make room for a bike and pedestrian pathway. that will be available tuesday at noon. >>> this is a continuation of the bay trail which extends down the shorelines of echlry ville and berkeley and oakland. we really wanted it to tie into the natural setting of that part of the bike path. >> for now it will only go just past the tower of the new suspension span and the trail to yerba buena island won'

marla tellez is live at police headquarters in san francisco where we're waiting to now get our first look at the main suspect this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the suspect is 21-year-old michael montgomery of lodi which you may know is outside the bay area and san joaquin county. i have a call in to police asking them when we will get a distinguish look at him. when they will release his mug shot. we can expect him to make his first court appearance. his son was acting in self defense when he stabbed 24-year-old jonathan denver to death after the giants/dodgers game ended. this happen add few blocks from the ballpark after denver and his group exchanged choice word which is led to a physical fight and ultimately denver's death. denver is a dodgers fan whose father works for security for the dodgers organization in los angeles. in fact, denver was with his father and brother wearing his dodger blue, and the suspect is said to be a giants fan when the 2 got in a fight. the death led to stepped up security where fans were on edge. >> devastating. like chai. >> i did

marla tellez is live on the scene. what are you hearing? >> reporter: this all started as a vehicle burglary call at 408:00 this morning. this is what happened. this is the aftermath. this is a stolen chevrolet suburban here t suv here, what happened it crashed into the pole that you're looking a. you can see the pole. it obviously turns side ways and there is the content of the suv on coleman. started as vehicle dollar call. it's a confusing scene. you've been hearing about vehicle break-ins in the area and this involved two suspects and i should mention that the suspect of this particular stolen vehicle is now in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. >> that's correct. we received a call of trying to get in. we've had a rash out here. the responding officers noted a couple of vehicles that looked suspicious, made a u-turn, lost sight of them because they fled, and he came upon this with only one vehicle. the driver of this vehicle was taken to the hospital, we don't know how serious the injuries are yet. but the vehicle was not

marla tallez joins us live. you have been talking to riders this morning. >> reporter: laura, i have. all of them, more than a dozen riders, they all seem to be happy with caltrain services. that's good news. so far, so good this morning. the underlying problem is the aging fleet as laura mentioned. caltrain spokesperson tells the san francisco examiner 20 of the 29 trains are more than 25 years old. their life expectancy is 25-30 years. they are definitely at the end of the line. this week, it is showing. take a look at some of the problems on monday. a speedometer failed on a northbound train. that led up to 20-minute delays. another train had brake issues. just yesterday, a train died on the peninsula all together. more brake problems for another northbound train. this is not turning away riders i've talked to. in fact, one man tells me he switched to caltrain in july when b.a.r.t. went on strike and he hasn't turned back. >> the train is smoother. it is a better ride. it's on time more than b.a.r.t. is and i

good morning to you, marla. first responders here do these emergency drills from time to time of course to prepare for the real thing. they conduct aircraft fire fighting drills. also today they are going to have a new tool they are going to be using at the coast card station. that is marine corps's aircraft. it can be used to provide humanitarian aid and disaster relief. it can take off and land like a helicopter but flies more like an airplane. san francisco firefighters, paramedics, emts and others will practice fire fighting, extrication and casualty evacuation. this comes as there is new information into this deadly crash that involved asiana airlines. the south korean carrier says it will expand training for all of its air crews and have an outside review of its safety standards and procedures. pilots will be getting more hours and flight simulators. they are going to start at 9:00 a.m. this is a preview to exercises that will continue and run for a week starting october 7. reporting live at sfo, christie

. >>> i'm marla tallez in for john kell wi kelly. students at a south bay high school have learned a popular math teacher has been arrested accused of having sex with a minor. bob, he is already finding some support online. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. yes. we have seen some tweets in support of hugo cortes guzman that paint him as a positive role model for students. santa clara police have a different opinion. yesterday, late afternoon, they took him in for questioning. after the interview, they arrested him for allegedly having sex with a minor. whether that person is a student at santa clara high, police will not say. cortes guzman teaches math at this school and is also involved in avid, a program that helps mostly low-income students prepare for college. the district sent a letter letting parents know about the arrest alerting them that he has been placed on leave. the letter asking parents not to jump to any conclusions. that he is presumed innocent. if anyone has any more information about this case, to contact pol

marla tellez is live with the latest on the investigation. and how the victims are doing. >> i want to start with an update on the 3-year-old boy. his name is dyante howard. we have a couple of pictures. he was shot in the face in the jaw. he is listed in critical condition but our affiliate in chicago is reporting he is expected to survive. his grandmother is at the hospital telling reporters her grandson is a fighter. he is one of 13 shot on chicago's south side at a city park. you can see the paramedics. so far no one has died. it happened at 10:15 central time so. 8:15 here in california. witnesses say at least 20 shots were fired from multiple gunman. >> like boom, boom, boom. >> it happened so fast. >> the 13 victims range in age from 3 to tour 1. 10 are male. four are listed in serious condition, eight in stable to good condition. dyante is the only one in critical condition. police believe this was gang related though they aren't saying why they think this, so far no one is in police custody. this is a an active investigation. i'll ke
