and most other public areas in the city. a vote that is drawing mixed reactions. kron four's philippe djegal explains exactly where smoking will be outlawed. and, when the new ordinance could go into effect. soon. this could be illegal and considered an infraction in walnut creek. lighting up and smoking a cigarette downtown. the new ordinance probihits smoking in or near any businesses. outdoor dining areas. all recreational areas. like parks, playgrounds, picnic areas and sports fields. smoking will even be prohibited at multi-unit residential properties. that's apartment complexes, condos and duplexes. smoking on balconies and patios will be against the law. the city council has to vote on the new ordinance one more time next month before its officially adopted. if approved, the ban would go into effect by november. city spokesperson sandra meyer says the city and property managers will have some 90 days to install signs. making the public aware of the new law. which would then most likely start being enforced by february. with fines raning from 100 to 500-doll
