that's because all this moisture is being squeezed out in the rockies. we is need this area of low pressure to lift. before that does you have this wind that flows east, and along the east range of the rockies and it squeezes all the moisture out. you can see the rain in the past 12 hours it was southeast but now it's starting to turn a little bit and that storm moves to the north. still as this moisture hits to the rockies a lot of rain in that same area. this does not move over 12 hours. we're talking about at least six inches of rain or more in a 24-hour period. that's the bull's-eye there over boulder. this will start to lift, but in the meantime flash flood watches and warning will continue for the area tonight and tomorrow. eventually, though, should see several, but not too soon, unfortunately. >> joining me now from an evacuation center in boulder, colorado, is chip frye, a public affairs representative, we heard from the sheriff from boulder county who said this is not an ordinary day, not an ordinary disaster. how would you describe what your t

this is the rockies. you can see lots of snow piling up on the mountains and actually the coldest air of the so far spilling in from the north lowering temperatures and causing this white stuff. you're expecting about 40 centimeters of snow to fall in the northern rockies into thursday. the cold air is expected to invade toward the southwest as we go into wednesday. los angeles, long beach, not too bad. dropping sharply as we go into wednesday. look at this. only 20 degrees in long beach on wednesday. that's about 15 degrees difference since tuesday. looking more like mid december, actually. in las vegas, 24 on thursday. last time we saw this number was in may. in such conditions, you can easily catch a cold, so please keep yourself warm. now, across the other side of the continent, we are seeing lots of heavy rain for the southeastern corner of the u.s. even tornadoes cannot be ruled out into tuesday night. the florida peninsula will remain on the wet side as we go into the -- as we go into friday at lea

as we get to the northwest, first the rockies. you can actually see already pushing into the northwest, a second system coming in. this is the big player in the northern rockies right now. the rest of the country pretty quiet. this has brought in many cases a first taste of snow a few days into fall. most of that as we get into the higher elevations. as you get through some of the mountainous passes, snow in wyoming this this morning is reported. lower elevations have had rain. still advisories up. wind is associated with this system, so that is causing problems, too, as this system is on the move. i said it's on the move. we're starting to see ahead of that rain move into northern parts of the plains. one beneficial part of this, there's more wind associated, less fog this morning, because that wind kind of mixing the atmosphere in parts of the midwest. a little bit into wisconsin. not that dense fog some of us were driving through. we see this push across the country. we spread out of the rockies, more into the northern plains,

especially into the northwest and the northern rockies where we're already just four days into fall. seeing snow out here. it has been pretty persistent in the last couple of days as the system has moved it's way, especially through the northern rockies. higher elevations, 6,000 feet and above. some places have already gone a foot of snow, and we could add to that. some of these are affecting a few of the passes, so be careful there. the lower elevations, this is rain, but if you're a skier, you're looking at places like jackson, wyoming, and going, it's early in the season. and too early it tell on that. but because of the weather out here, and the system that has the wind and driving the snow that makes it more difficult to see, we have the winter weather advisory out here, including in the darker blues there. but this is on the move. as it moves across the country, it's going to be bringing some areas of cooler air. with the system, we have seen into the northern rockies and the pacific northwest, 10-20° below average. and a lot of 50s. those are going to be 40s for the high, and

the storm that we're watching is still in the northern rockies, still producing snow out there in wyoming. the high country is getting it good. areas like casper, an all-rain event for you. over the next 48 hours, this is a slow-moving rainstorm. it's going to head into the northern plains. we could get some strong storms today, though, along that front as it kicks out into the plains, especially areas from amarillo, out to rural sections of western kansas, the goodland area, also out there into western nebraska. may see storms in denver, too, but i don't think they'll be too severe. everywhere east of the mississippi is looking dry and beautiful. the only exception just a few showers leftover there in florida. as we go through your weekend forecast, that storm slowly pushes into the central plains. we'll see more storms along that cold front on saturday from texas all the way to minneapolis and chicago. and then by the time we get to sunday, there will still be some leftover showers and storms from dallas all the way to the ohio valley. but the concentration of rain will be diminishing a
