"world cup 2014" raked in $344 million in sales in just one day. [ bell ringing ] now the futures are down about 150 points. stocks have been taking a hit the last few days. traders i spoke to say they're hoping washington will strike an 11th hour deal but if they don't there is some fear about what sort of effects this is going to have on the economy. even though stocks have recovered quickly from previous government shutdowns, if the government shuts down for one week that could reduce quarterly economic growth by 0.1%. another problem is that investors may not have anything to trade on if key economic reports are not released. the most important, carol, being the jobs report, we don't know whether friday's jobs report will come out, that has traders scratching their heads and lastly, for investors who are worried about their 401(k)s, bottom line, sit tight, stocks will almost certa

zain asher is joining us now at the new york stock exchange. zain, we're seeing an impact on markets today. but what's the concern for the marketed and the economy over the medium and longer term. >> listen, the market is used to stale mates in washington. traders say this one might actually have a more aggressive impact on stocks because the shutdown or the potential shutdown i should say is really only one piece of the puzzle. the debt ceiling is on the horizon and that will have a much bigger impact. you can only imagine the ramifications. we've seen cuts in spending. put a huge dent in gdp, business confidence, that kind of thing. the good news if you can call it that, the market does have a little bit of wiggle room. a few weeks ago we were at record highs in the s&p 500. the s&p is up more than 15% this year. there is some degree of wiggle room. wolf? >> we know on friday morning they'll have the new jobs report out for september. how is that likely to play as far as the markets are concerned? is. >> so we are not entirely sure if we are

zain asher, let's go to you at the new york stock exchange. tell me about this deal. >> hi, brooke. blackberry has found a buyer. fairfax financial holdings is planning to buy blackberry for about $4.7 billion. blackberry has had major trying times. you mentioned the layoffs. the company planned to lay off 40% of its workers. also the company posted second-quarter losses of about a billion dollars. the z-10 and q-10 models hadn't caught on as much as they expected. it was hard to believe this company was once king of the market in terms of smartphones. they halted trading about a half hour ago to limit volatility and now it's traded slightly higher. it looks as though investors might see this as an opportunity perhaps to sort of limit some of our blackberry's losses previously. >> this announcement, how big of a shock was it today? >> listen, the writing has been on the wall for some time. people had been asking, how long can blackberry really survive on its own. it mentioned those layoffs it announced on friday. it hasn't kept unwith competition. it once commanded 50% of the market

zain asher is here to answer some of these. first things first, how does this even work with the phone. >> there's a button on the iphone 5 that doubled as a fingerprint scanner. here's what's interesting, there are different levels of fingerprint security depending on how many points on your thumb are going to be read. for example, some types of technology might use 16 different points on your thumb to verify it's you. the iphone 5s is probably going to use less because it may have to account for variables like if you burn yourself. apple doesn't want people to constantly complain they can't get into their phone. the fewer amount of points, the more likely it is for someone else around the world to have a fingerprint to access your phone. there's no chance you'll ever meet them or they'll ever get into your phone. >> like the nsa, for example, zain? >> there are some concerns about how vulnerable these phones are going to be to hacking. here's what you have to understand. first, the thumbprint is going to be encrypted. secondl
