"outfront" tonight john boehner and ben ferguson. ben, editorial headlines are consistent and i wanted to make that point obviously coming from the wall street journal. i didn't put the "new york times" in there. because i knew you would say of course and they were nasty. but so is the journal. why are hall those headlines wrong? >> there's always this narrative any time there's a debate with the gop that it's the end of the world. and it's not yet, again, the end of the world. we saw this when john mccain got the nomination and when mitt romney was pulling ahead of rick santorum, oh, my god the divide is massive. in this situation you do have a changing of the guard going on. i said this the other day and took a lot of heat for it. but i think the days of mitch mcconnell and john mccain are being numbered now. for five years they've been consistently good at losing to barack obama. they have nothing that they can say they've done independently to actually grow the gop. and my point about this is this -- >> they got the sequester. >>

granderson and ben ferguson. so l.z., i want to begin with you because i know that you have written that you are not anti-gun. you know, you have a gun in your own home. so tell me why teachers shouldn't be armed. >> i can certainly appreciate the conversation in terms of wanting to do all that we can to protect our students. as a father of a young man in the city in chicago, i definitely want us to do all we can to protect kids. but with that being said, i don't believe we have done all that we can to protect kids yet. i see teachers as the second to last resort in terms of keeping kids safe in school. i would like to see more police officers around campus. i would like to see perhaps security within the schools, before teachers, because teachers have enough going on. we're looking at a situation now which a man has been shot at 15 times by police officers who are trained to handle crisis situations. a man who was without a weapon and in his own driveway, shot at 15 times. so you're telling me now, a teacher who

ben ferguson, the blame laid well and squarely there on john boehner's inability to control his own troops. what is your reaction to that? >> i think that's ridiculous. you can see it from both sides. you see the democrats. you saw it in debbie wasserman-schul wasserman-schultz. there is this pure i think bitterness, anger on both sides. they're both yelling at each other in tv instead of in a private room. i think cooler heads have to prevail. i mean, you can't walk out there and say as the president of the united states in america tonight, well, they're not going do me any favors and i don't have to give in to anything. at some point you've got to walk into a room and say the president of the united states of america, this is affecting people's lives. we're not going to negotiate in the public anymore. we'll all come to the white house in a meeting and work this crap out before it gets real serious. that's what's going to have to happen here for us to move forward. i jokingly said a moment ago to a rend, you know what, i wish when the government shutdown, that meant that every microphone

we have ben ferguson with us, a nationally syndicated radio host in dallas. will ted cruz do this again? you probably don't know the answer, no one does. but does he have enough pull in the house to get those house republicans to toe the line one more time? >> he has pull, but i don't think she probably going to do this and part of that is because we have seen that the white house also knows that if we have another government shutdown they will get blamed for not negotiating. we saw a little movement from the house and from the republicans. we'll change things. we're willing to look at obama care and changes, now there actually is going to be negotiating. if we shut down again the i think the president will take more blame for not being able to keep things moving. he has time now. he should be in camp david saying we're not going to let this happen again, and i think they will get some sort of compromise. >> democrats didn't really have to do a lot of compromising to get through this initial crisis, but it's not over yet. what do you see as the biggest hurdle

ferguson, and on the left, maria cardona, cnn political commentator and democratic strategist. candy, i mean, can't we just make this stop? the speaker had to have heard this open mike. so why on earth did he even bring that up? >> don, if you don't think that both sides look at this through a political lens as well as a policy lens, then you're not paying that much attention. this is the fact of it, that political games get played in washington is lore. it's not a revelation. that the republicans were saying, listen. they're refusing to negotiate, was pretty evident on monday, tuesday, and wednesday, before this secret conversation, when republicans were out there saying, well, the president will negotiate with syria, but he won't negotiate with us. they clearly think that they are on a path that will help them convince the public that they're right and the democrats are wrong because there's no movement here. that's kind of the bottom line. >> candy, i want to go to senate leaders. stand by, let's listen in. including harry reid. >> last night, the president canceled his trip

hilary rose and then ben ferguson. i want to start with you, ben, about that comment from senator paul and the comment from house speaker john boehner. boehner held up a newspaper saying this is not some damn game. it seems like there is gamesmanship on both sides. senator paul keeps saying this over and over, i can win this. is that hypocritical? >> no. they say they can negotiate. they sent back another option to delay it a year. this is the sausage being made in washington and people hate seeing that happen. it is like yesterday, barack obama walks out of the white house with the vice president of the united states of america and they act like it is impromptu and he is not wearing a jacket and he knows a diner is giving 10% off before he speaks at the restaurant. this restaurant is giving 10% off to the furloughed workers. the sad part is they should not do it in public. the president should be at camp david with his people and they should act like adults for the weekend and get away from people and away from improm
