"san francisco examiner" columnist melissa griffin-caen on the reform measure that could show up on the 2014 ballot. >> reporter: the mayors of five cities in california all democrats including chuck reed of san jose have submitted a ballot measure to allow changes to the pensions of current public employees. it's set to go forward in november 2014. see, right now in california, when you're hired as a government employee, you lock in your pension benefits and contributions so they can't be changed later. when local governments get in trouble they can't touch the pensions of current employees, only future employees. this means they can't recognize savings for 25 to 35 years later. but the proposed initiative would give voters in cities the ability to change the future pension benefits of current city employees. now, they can't take away benefits already accrued by current employees but they can say, going forward, employees need to contribute more or receive less. needless to say public employee unions are gearing up to fight this tooth and nail. it's in the early stages but keep your ey
