. >> reporter: there was a reward in orlando for anyone who could point police to joseph jenkins and charles walker, the convicted killers whose escape embarrassed florida's corrections system. today, walker's mother, lillie danzy, pleaded with her son to turn himself in. >> wement you to surrender yourself to someone who you trust, who will bring you back in safely. we tonight want any harm to come to you. >> reporter: jenkins and walker were serving life sentences for separate murders when forged court papers ordered their early release. jenkins was let out september 27, walker on october 8. they obeyed florida law and registered as freed felons at the orange county jail. a victim's relative was notified of the early release and she alerted prosecutors. jenkins had been caught trying to free himself the same way once before and this has also become a prison scam in other states. in 2010, forged papers freed a convicted killer in wisconsin. he was recaptured a week later and also sprung an inmate in pennsylvania last year, convicted on tax fraud charges. no one caught on for several

we now know both charles walker and joseph jenkins spent time with their families in orlando going to church, even visiting their grandparents. apparently they were not hiding at all for days even a couple of weeks. now a manhunt is under way to put the killers back behind bars. just a short time ago walker's mother stood before cameras pleading with her son to turn himself in. >> charles, is there anything too hard for god? god knows who you are. i know who you are. your family knows who you are. and we want you to return home safely. >> both men were serving life sentences for murder. forged paperwork douched prison officials in to thinking the men's sentences had been reduced. i want to go straight now to nick valencia who has been tracking this story near caravel, how are they handling this with these men free? >> reporter: lost in all of this is the emotion of the victims' family. our cnn crew in orlando sat down with the son of one of the victims of joseph jenkins and just by listening to him, don, you can really tell how terrified he is and after learning about his father's mur

nbc's mark potter joins us from the courthouse in orlando with details on the story. mark, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, ann. it came to light here at the orange county courthouse. an incredible scam that led to the release of two cold-blooded killers, each freed decades before they would have completed their sentences. the two fugitives are charles walker and joseph jenkins, both serving decades-long sentences for murder and other crimes. released from prison after these fraudulent documents were filed in a court clerk's office, reducing their sentences. the paperwork had the forged signature of judge belvin perry who presided over the high profile casey anthony trial. >> it's for ingenious. it's a breakout without having a break out. >> reporter: after the inmates walked free through the doors of the prison 11 days apart, they each made their way 300 miles south to their hometown of orlando. and incredibly walked into the county jail there to register themselves as released felons, listing local addresses. their release might have gone unnoticed by author

charles walker was charged with second degree murder six months later in the same area in orlando for killing a man on the corner of the street who he said was bullying him. the victims of the men were in the area had they heard they were able to walk out freely, so press were trying to find these guys. just hours before their capture, walker's and jenken's families were pleading for them to turn themselves in. we heard great detail by these men picked up by their families, spent a week and time with their families in public places, having used these forged documents. of course, this all started with the forged court documents. the court documents, we're told, were sophisticated. they had the orange county seal. they had signatures of prosecutors, including the signature of the ninth circuit court judge belvin perry who used to be the judge for the casey anthony trial. he told fox and friends he doubts this kind of thing will happen again. >> i doubt very seriously if this will happen again. number one, the department of corrections will be calling to verify that the documents are in

all along, the sheriff's department in orlando, they were from around the same neighborhood in the orlando neighborhood. all along, they were suspecting they were still in the state of florida, despite what they did, forging the documents to get out. just a few more details about their capture. the u.s. marshall service, in conjunction with the florida department of law enforcement were able to capture these two earlier this evening. if you remember, over the course of the last week, there's been so much finger pointing and questions as to how this could happen. but, they were able to do it. to recap, they said they did nothing wrong in processing the paperwork. they were following the procedures of the court order. we learned throughout the course of the week, this isn't the first time it happened. there was another, third man who tried to forge documents as well for an early release. he was caught before he was released. these two suspects, the two convicted killers, as you mentioned, both charles walker and joseph jenkins, both serving life sentences in this correcti correctional facili
