sam stein, this came at a -- at the end of a day that now seems inevitable. there was no one, absolutely no one saw a way for republicans to win in this fight when they started it. >> yeah, i mean, what's remarkable is that after two weeks, two and a half weeks time we ended up right where we thought we would be. we wasted $24 billion in economic activity along the way and a lot of people had to suffer but we ended up where everyone assumed that we would end up. we will be lifting the debt limit for a little bit longer and will replay in the a little bit. but the house republicans could have seen this one coming and should have seen this one coming. they didn't do anything about it. >> howard dean, this comes after an overwhelmingly positive vote in the senate. 81 senators voted in favor, casting the reasonable vote in favor. 18 casting the unreasonable vote against it. all of the no votes coming from republicans. but i want to read you some of the threats that were issued to republican senators and democratic senators today by these conservative lobbying gro

and in washington, sam stein. we will get to the latest on the government shut down in just a moment, but first the dramatic scene on capitol hill yesterday where a woman is suspected of trying to run down a white house barricade was eventually shot and killed yesterday afternoon with reports of shots fired. the capitol went on lockdown. legislators and staff were told to take shelter. when the dust settled, law enforcement said a woman named miriam carrey tried to ram her car through a barricade and took off at 1350espeeds reaching 80 per hour. capitol police surrounded her and she backed off and took off again, hitting an officer. she was later killed in a hail of gunfire, unarmed, despite early reports she may have fired a gun. the police fountain 18-month-old girl believed to be her daughter in the car. thankfully the girl was unharmed. it turned now to why carrey acted the way she did. she was a dental hygienist living in stanford, connecticut. she was recently let go by her employer who said she suffered a f

sam stein. >> thank you, mr. president. what assurance can you give to those affected by a shutdown who are concerned about an even longer impasse? and how worried are you personally that your preferred solution to this is a clean cr at sequestration levels may do harm to the nation's economy and your second-term agenda? >> well, sam, you're making an important point, which is what we're asking of the republicans right now so to keep the government open at funding levels that democrats think are very harmful to the economy and inadequate to make sure that the economy's growing faster, more people are put back to work, and the middle class is growing. we're willing to pass at least a short-term budget that opens up the government at current funding lflz. it doesn't even address the harm that's been done because of sequestration. now, the democrats have a budget that would eliminate sequestration, this meat cleaver approach to deficit reduction, and make sure that we're adequately funding basic medical research and head start
