christine romans is here with more on that. good morning, christine. >> good morning, carol. this morning the dow jones industrial average at a record again, i think this is the 37th of the year, the close is above here where it is today the 37th record high close of the year so the stock market has been going in the direction of savers and investors who are investing in their 401(k). let me show you what fidelity says the average balance now is of the 12.6 million 401(k)s they have. record high $84,300. for the people who have been investing every month through their paychecks over ten years that average balance is now $223,100. we've never seen those averages quite this high. it is i guess validation really of what you've seen this year in the stock market, but i would caution that about half of americans are not invested in the stock market in any way. they do not have a 401(k), so for them it is the jobs market, that's the most important thing here. i expect we'll hear from janet yellen at her confirmation hearing today before the senate banking committee that she is stil

as christine said the afghan security force is becoming more capable. it's relatively large and certainly larger than afghanistan, one of the poorer countries can afore under present circumstances. obviously a lot of talk about natural resources that exist in afghanistan over time perhaps, you know, that can help to, you know, raise revenue in afghanistan. there has been a lot of work to try to improve trade between afghanistan and its neighboring countries. that again is a long-term prospect. so the reality is that for the foreseeable future, afghanistan is going to need a considerable amount of international support. >> christine what about the relationship with karzai. he depends on the united states currently, and if it hadn't been for the united states, he never would have been president. so what about all of the posturing he has been doing lately? >> as an american it is very frustrating that there is even an expectation that our president would apologize for the mistakes that were made. a lot of the aid that the americans have paid have gone to t

i'm poppy harlow in today for christine romans. investors went crazy for twitter on the first day of trading, it opened at $45.10, more than a 70% premium to the offering price. it stayed in that range for much of the day closing just below 45 days a share when that closing bell rang at 4:00 p.m. that stock price put the company's value at just about $25 billion. $25 billion. let's talk about that. that's a hard number to grasp. i want to bring in matt mccall, the president of penn financial and rachel sklar, an avid twitter user. when i see that number, $25 billion valuation, bigger than tiffany, hershey, all these companies, why do you think it priced that way and there was this investor reaction, matt? >> when you feel like you have a connection with something, especially a company like this, you want to be involved. that's a big reason a stock opened so high yesterday. the average investor feels i know twitter, i feel it. i want to buy it. >> you and i have talked about this. does that mean you should invest in it just because

as christine said, there's a lot of issues. and to me that goes right to the initial reporting of this, the drape has been pulled back on the nfl culture but also it should be pulled back on the reporting. some of those initial reports were not even in context. richie incognito was basically said to extort $15,000 from jonathan martin for a trip to las vegas that martin didn't take. we talked to several of the guys who went on the trip and it was an annual linemen trip. flights were paid for, hotel rooms, shows, et cetera and at the last minute jonathan martin backed out and so as with anybody going on any trip like this, does the person who backs out, should they pay for their freight and i think most of us would say probably should. so again the reporting on this is coming -- again, initially it came from jonathan martin's side and it was completely one-sided. i think there's still some balance but there's so many questions out here that remain to be answered. >> now, christine. >> in the past when we have seen reporting on h
