todd's interview but it was a great interview. >> chuck -- i just called you chuck. we'll call you luke for the moment, stick with your real name. you cover the hill. i want to get a better understanding what we're hearing from members of congress, specifically house republicans about the president's apology. the white house obviously trying to speak directly to individuals affected by those cancellation letters, people who thought they would be able to keep their plan but now finding they may not be able to keep the plan. he said he wants to created a -- administrative fixes. what are house republicans saying about that right now? >> house republicans are giddy. they are giddy because they believe they can now for the third election in a row use health care law as ammunition against democrats. they all believe in 2010 the reason why they were able to win 63 seats was because of unpopularity of the health care law because people of the united states did not understand it. they believe that will continue. look for them to have more hearings into every single -- all th

our chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd sat down with the president exclusively a short time ago at the white house. he's on the north lawn to start us off. good evening. >> reporter: good evening. the troubled health care rollout and the president's apparent broken promise about people keeping the plans they like has been weighing heavily on the entire white house. it was a chastened commander in chief i spoke with earlier today. i will start with health care. it's probably the most quoted thing or requoted thing you have said in your presidency. if you like your health care plan, you can keep it. >> if you like your health care plan, you will be able to keep your health care plan. period. >> reporter: what happened? >> well, first of all, i meant what i said. we worked hard to try to make sure we implemented it properly. obviously we didn't do a good enough job. i regret that. we're talking about 5% of the population who are in what's called the individual market. they're out there buying health insurance on their own. even though it only affects a small amount

did the president deny or admit right there in that answer to chuck todd that there was a poll taken and focus groups delivered and organized to find out whether it would be a good idea to dump biden and bring in hillary. was the answer yes or no from the president there? >> well, i'll jump in and say yes, the president admitted that in a very oblique and round about way. he said he doesn't delve into polls. that doesn't mean he doesn't read them. he said if they had come and asked me shall we get rid of joe biden i would have said no. that doesn't mean that they weren't percolating the idea around. and i also love the 2 million employees excuse. i mean, that was pretty funny. i got to say. and, you know, the fact is he did talk to joe biden about it. they had it out. i think they genuinely like each

let's go to chuck todd over across the river. chuck, do you see the beginnings of a headline tomorrow with the total picture we're getting right now? >> reporter: i think the total -- cuccineli versus christie. nothing is over here in virginia. you never know, you got to wait until all the votes are counted, but if the exit poll is headed in that direction, i think you're going to have the establishment wing of the republican party, because this happened in their backyard in virginia and see the results, particularly in northern virginia and they're going to say it's time to push back on the tea party wing of the party that's doing damage, because when you look at --. >>> the tea party is over, the republican party has a hangover and the people that didn't drink the tea like chris christie are okay tonight. >> i think virginia is the new ohio. it's the indication of where american politics is headed. if it rejects the tea party, as it looks like they're going to do, that's something that john boehner and mitch mcconnell need to p

>> chuck todd is at the white house. the president made a point of saying because you have a temporary freeze, iran cannot use this freeze period or negotiations to keep the nuclear program going. they get a freeze and verification from that. that's what critics have been saying the president would use this time to keep building the weapons. >> reporter: that's an important part of the deal to watch and as far as israel is concerned. the big political fallout is this could be the time where president obama has to veto a piece of legislation that comes to him from congress. i can tell you, there's bipartisan support and going to be concern about the deal. you can see a house and senate bill getting to the president's desk. if it happens in these six months, the president has to veto it. >> chuck todd at the white house. we want to go to geneva. ann curry has exclusive access to the talks. she interviewed the president of iran exclusively. as you have taken his measure, a self-described reformer, someone who opened a twitt

there's a growing perception, i'll quoting chuck todd here. that you're not always on top of some things. the idea you don't know certain things. he's referring to the website, he's referring to the nsa, to snowden, he's referring to angela merkel's cell phone being tapped, the president doesn't really answer that question. he doesn't say i know all of these things. i guess partly because he doesn't want to say he knew it if he knew it. >> he takes out a bit of a wandering answer. understandably so in some cases. this stuff is very sensitive and there's some stuff the president doesn't want to say publicly and sometime he hurts himself by keeping it private. i'll give you a moment for comparison. remember when george w. bush look out from air force one during katrina? president bush did not land that plane because at that sensitive moment, he didn't want to take the police and firefighters away from the first responders doing their job. however what did that picture come to depict? because of other mistakes made in washington and louisiana. it

chuck todd asked him if christie is conservative enough to be the nominee. listen. >> there's a lot of time between now and 2016. i would suggest governor christie and the rest of us need to focus on 2014, making sure that we elect more governors that have those policies put in place to create jobs, to create wealth, to be the juxtaposition. >> kelly, does he have the cred here to get it done in the primaries? >> here's what interesting is chris christie has more conservative street cred than mitt romney was. mitt romney was on the record was being pro gun control before he wasn't. chris christie combines the best qualities of a giuliani and a romney, which is not a bad thing for conservatives, even though there's a liberal narrative that he's not going to get past the primary. i think he'll have an easier role in the primaries than romney did. >> that he can maneuver through the primaries and into the general election. jonathan, chris christie is getting a lot of mainstream attention as well. here he is on the new "michael j. fox show." >> we'll be speaking

chuck todd, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. normally these off-year elections are a signal about how the party in power is doing. but this year it's different. these governor races in virginia and new jersey are going to have some ramifications. but it is about a presidential campaign in 2016. in new jersey, republican chris christie is running for re-election as governor. but many of the supporters have their eye on a bigger prize. how many are excited about chris christie running for president? two hands? >> i'm so excited. he's wonderful. i think he'd make a great president. i want to be there. >> hey, everybody. >> reporter: in just a three hour drive to the south in swing state virginia reveals another high-profile governors race where presidential politics is lurking in the background. a test of hillary clinton's clout. terry mcauliffe, a friend of the clintons is favored to be the next governor. >> terry has always been there for me. i'm pleased to be here for him. >> reporter: the clintons together have made ten appeara

i think the suburbs as chuck todd was pointing out. one thing that was remarkable in the polls too. 20% of voters said that abortion was their number one issue in this race so obviously cuccinelli is very far right extreme views on abortion were of concern here. what republicans were handed. they had historical trend. virginians like to hand the governor's mansion to the party that is out of power in the white house. they have done so since 1973. they have off-year demographic election trend going for them. in off years, it its not the coalition by and large that shows up to vote. it tend to be more republican leading electorate. they also had in terry mcauliffe. a relatively weak candidate. that they could have picked off. they had on the republican side. the lieutenant-governor. much more moderate. much more mainstream candidate. if they elected him. if they had nominated him. i think there is a very good chance that he would have won the governorship. the tea party republicans need to realize they were handed all of these advantages

chuck todd is there for us tonight. chuck, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. well, a lot of the action is on the east coast. polls are closed. we have some winner. governor chris christie has been re-elected. we've projected that, nbc news. here in virginia, the bellwether of bellwethers the last few years, we're still projecting this race as too close to call. not even half the results are counted yet. could be a long night here in virginia. we have projected a democrat to win the lieutenant governorship here in virginia. the race here in virginia has been all about national issues. the democrats talking about government shutdown, the republicans talking about the disastrous health care rollout. so in many ways, virginia, the bellwether for how election night goes. across the country, though, there's a lot of interesting elections. you mentioned the new mayors that will be elected in detroit and boston. out akrss the colorado 11 counties are voting whether to secede and become their own state. seattle the incumbent mayor there, he's got a tough re-election fi

a let's bring in chief white house correspondent and political director chuck todd. are there any obstacles preventing the president from signing this deal? >> not actual obstacles but there are plenty of political obstacles. he will you go there with this deal and you heard plenty of lawmakers this morning, all through sunday shows, even ones very critical of this deal say, well, the deal has been made. there is not a lot that can be done for now. here's the way to look at it. congress is giving the president a very short leash. any iota of something that makes it look like iran is not doing what is supposed to be done in this deal and you will see new sanctions bill. you will see pressure from capitol hill like we haven't seen before. remember, support for israel is bipartisan on capitol hill. israel has a very powerful constituency on capitol hill so if there is any movement here that iran doesn't look like they're doing this deal, the political pressure on the president to back out will be tremendous. >> all right. chuck todd of the white house tonight. thank you

joining me chuck todd white house correspondent, political director and host of "the daily rundown." chris cillizza msnbc contributor and host of tv's "in play." tell me the interesting signs and warning signs, perhaps. >> if you look at the general election matchup here, this is a bit of a reality check. yes, chris christie had this monster launching pad right after the media tour, virtual media tour, country, national tv, all this extra attention for being a republican that could turn a blue state like new jersey at least red for governorship and re-election, some impressive numbers. did all of that. at the end of the day when you have an r next to your name and essential matchup, you see he has the same problems mitt romney had in a matchup, a national matchup. he only leads hillary clinton among seniors, whites, and wealthy people. well, that's something the republican party has to fight against. obviously something chris christie talked about. the other part of this poll that was more interesting and a lot more substantive for political junkies trying to learn about 2016. hillar

chuck todd sat down with him and asked him about a promise he made to the american people that said if you like your health insurance, you can keep it, period. >> first of all, i meant what i said. we worked hard to try to make sure we implemented it. obviously, we didn't do a good enough job and i regret that. we are talking 5% of the population in the individual market, out there buying health insurance on their own. it only affected a small amount of the population, it means a lot to them when they get this letter, canceled. i am deeply concerned about it. i assigned my team to see what can we do to close some of the holes and gaps in the law. >> do you feel like you owe these folks an apology? they feel misled. you have seen the anger out there. >> i regret, very much, that what we intended to do, which is to make sure that everybody is moving into better plans because they want them as opposed to they are forced into it, that we weren't as clear as we needed to be in terms of the changes that were taking place. i am sorry that they are finding themselves in this situation based on
