/ashbury, lower haight, western addition, japantown, and part of hayes valley. supervisor breed is one of two new supervisors elected in 2012. today we'll get to know her and talk about the toughest issues facing the city. welcome, supervisor. thank you for joining us today. >> thank you is for having me. >> let's start talking a little about your background, where you drogue up, went to school and what kind of jobs you had in the past. >> well, i grew up in the heart of the western addition. i grew up in public housing in the western addition. my grandmother raised me and my brothers and i went to public schools here in the city. ended up at u.c. davis and graduated and immediately returned back to the community and started working for the mayor's office of neighborhood services, and worked on treasure island, and eventually became the executive director of the african-american art and culture complex located in the western addition, a place i participated in programs in the arts as a kid. so, it was really an honor to be able to work directly in the community,

how will you deal with the folks that hang out on haight street and the issue of homelessness? >> well, i think that's a real -- i mean, it's a city-wide issue. and i think part of what we have to do is work together to deal with it, just like public safety. it's a work in progress. it's not something that you fix and then you move on. it's something that you continue to work with. i mean, san francisco is an attractive place to people in general so we're going to get folks from all over, homeless, nonhomeless. and i think part of the balance is making sure that social service agencies that provide support to homeless individuals are available, that they have the resources they need, that they are held accountable to be out there and working and talking to folks who are interested in services. and the other issue is that, you know, we do have sadly an increase in crime and the area as a result of an increase in the homeless population. so, having a police presence which we've had, park station has been really active and not only being out there and enforcing the law, but doing

a deal's a deal. >> back at kentucky state penitentiary, randy haight made it clear. he's not as eager to face death as holton. but he's ready for it, nonetheless. >> i'm extremely sad for what i've done. it hurts me knowing that i went to the level that i went. and if there was any way possible for me to be healed or correct it, believe me, it would be done. it's an impossible situation not only for me but for everybody involved, you know? and i'm not saying that to get out of an execution or -- because like i said, i'd ready. if you want to kill me, let's go. i'm ready to go. but i think that i have something i can offer somebody. and i don't think it's really time for me to die. >> america's prisons, dangerous, often deadly. there are 2 million people doing time. every day, it's a battle to survive and to maintain order. >> down! on your feet! down! >> this is "lockup." ♪ >>> in rural indiana, stands a maximum security juvenile facility charged with rehabilitating some of america's most dangerous teens. >> they don't think.

the cole street clinic is a youth clinic in the heart of the haight ashbury and they target youth. tom woodell takes care of many of the central city residents and they have great expertise in providing services for many of the homeless. potrero hill and southeast health centers are health centers in those particular communities that are family health centers, so they provide health care to patients across the age span. . >> many of our clients are working poor. they pay their taxes. they may run into a rough patch now and then and what we're able to provide is a bridge towards getting them back on their feet. the center averages about 14,000 visits a year in the health clinic alone. one of the areas that we specialize in is family medicine, but the additional focus of that is is to provide care to women and children. women find out they're pregnant, we talk to them about the importance of getting good prenatal care which takes many visits. we initially will see them for their full physical to determine their base line health, and then enroll them in prenatal care which occurs over

intermission and the castro eureka valley noe valley, the next, it's the blighter shade of blue is haight ashbury. this is where most of the evictions were concentrated between 2009 and 2013. the numbers are there by neighborhood. what we've put next to them is changes in property values during that period as recorded by the assessor recorder. that's counting all kinds of properties, that includes commercial property as well as residential and as you can see a number of the neighborhoods outpailsd the city-wide total for increased rates in assessed valuation. the others were also high but not as high as the city-wide rate. the ones high were the inner mission, castro, and castro. what's more striking is the column on the right showing increase in home prices. this is the actual home price of homes for sale during that period. five of the 7 neighborhoods exceeded the city-wide total in increased sales prices of their real estate and you can see it their. inner mission again very high with 29.5 percent, castro ue reek ka valley with 36.6 percent, and the others mostly well above the city-wi

. >> for 12 years young people in san francisco's haight districts say they have had an oasis at the homeless youth alliance. but it's now set to shut down on christmas day. >> it's heartbreaking. >> heartbreaking for those who come here off the streets for shower, food, a place to nap or needle exchange. hya serves young people up to 29 years old . >> we do a lot of one-on-one counseling and we have a therapist and psychiatrist, and the numbers for use in them have junk for 40% on last two years. >> the building owner says he's long supported it why aj and has rented the building at below market rates. he says he simply can't afford to keep the hya cheer anymore. >> it's one of the few cases that i actually find nonjudgmental about the way you look or act. >> the homeless said the senator was done in by san francisco's booming real estate market. city officials say some members have complained of the years about the center. some businesses tell us the closure could bring on a local crisis. >> i can see all these homeless people waiting there at 11:00 o'clock a.m. to get some kind of
