this little healthcare slice of the pie is getting bigger. that trend is expected to continue, especially for the estimated 55% of all americans who get health insurance through their employers. that translates to 171 million people across the country and rising premiums are now part of the yearly ritual. 2014 will be no different. employers on average pay 75% of their employee as healthcare each year. julie stone who helps with health strategies. thank you for being part of the program. what are employers doing? are they shifting these costs to employees? cutting benefits or saying there are fewer people that are part of the program? >> all of the above. they're shifting costs to employees and to a greater extent to family members. we see 22% of employers who will pass on 5% or month to employees. 34% a third of those employers are going to increase the family cost or greater. employees need to look at if they have a spouse with coverage elsewhere, where it makes sense in light of these increases. >> the average for next year, the average in

independents are most hostile to the healthcare plan. they are even angrier over the democrats and healthcare. the other segment you have to watch in off-year election are the voters over age 65. they vote in disproportionate number in the off-year elections and they're the most opposed to the president healthcare. they determine the majority and both of them moved half a dozen points from the democrats to the republicans in the last month. >> interesting. the president announced he was implementing his open fix address that millions of miles per hours are dropped from the insurance plan on the market. do you think he has bought back time and can he win confidence of people at this point to show obamacare can go forward? >> you used a word "confidence." what you have right now is the miles per hour people believe washington is making promises it cannot keep. they feel that all institutions who are supposed to keep this country together, that they are all failing. they are making commitments, they cannot afford them or produce them. the f

so the people that had a healthcare policy in 2010, when the law came into being, those healthcare policies have changed anyway. so many people would not have the policy today that they would have in 2010. and a lot of the policies as well are not very good policies. so it's possible that people might go to the website, sign up and end up with care under the affordable care act, what we call obamacare, and they will find that they have better healthcare than at the moment. but the point is well made. for the president of the united states, if you want to keep your healthcare policy, you can keep it, and the fact that that turns out to not be true for many americans, it's quite politically damaging. >> george h. bush said, read my lines. over and over again. and here's a president that doesn't need to be reelected again. >> we want to take a listen to what house speaker, nancy pelosi, majority leader said, she offered an alternative to the affordable care act. >> this republican initiative would undermine healthcare reform laws and causing premiums in the marketplace to spike, according to t

the first year is a very critical time for this healthcare exchange. they have got to survive the first year by getting enough folks to sign up for the exchanges. so far we see those numbers have been quite paltry. one of the reasons the web site is not working well. we know by november 30th the day it's supposed to start working perfectly it's not going to be working perfectly. combine all of these problems and yes it does suggest that the healthcare law may not survive that is a big question. democrats on capitol hill know this. they are quite concerned which is why they are all trying to throw up their own legislative fixes. we can't rule out that senate democrats may try to pass something on their own just to kind of show constituency they are doing something. >> right. >> but county law be fixed and can it survive? we're all wondering that. it's going to depend on whether or not the glitches are fixed and people can find affordable care online. that's not clear yet. >> i want to come back to something you mentioned at the outset and that is employ

. >> back to healthcare. can you guarantee to the americanamerican people that the is going to be operational by november 30th. and secondly more broadly this is your signature on domestic legs. legislation. you hear on the hill that--is that how this mess came to be? >> i think thi there is going te a lot of there is going to be a lot of evaluation of how we got to this point. and i'm assuring you i have been asking a lot of questions about that. the truth is that this is number one, very complicated. and the website itself is doing a lot of stuff. there are not a lot of website out there that have to help people compare their possible insurance options. verify income to find out what kind of tax credits they may get. and communicate with the insurance companies so they can purchase. and make sure that all of it is verified. there are a bunch of pieces to it that made it challenging. and you combine that with the fact that the federal government does a lot of things really well, one things it does not do wel
