indra petersons is tracking the storm. she is in the pittsburgh suburbs this morning and she's joining us on the phone. how is the situation there, indra? >> you know, it's really amazing, coming in yesterday, i was shocked to see that the planes landed. visibility was so poor. light rain yesterday afternoon. there's definitely some flurries coming down here. take a look at the radar right now, you can actually see where the system is right now. the travel nightmare is filled with so many people today. we're still talking about heavier rain pushing into the northeast. take a look at the northeast all the way down to the mid-atlantic. you're still talking about that heavy rain on the back side, just like in pennsylvania, still talking about the snow coming down. the bulk of it pushing east, that's the good news, kind of moving out of the ohio valley. unfortunately, conditions can worsen to places like upstate new york with heavier bands of snow making their way in. speaking of snow, we've seen good amounts in ohio, 6 to 8 i

indra petersons is going that for us. tell us what you're seeing as this moves across the country. >> it will make a lot of people go crazy with the travel plans, the conditions are only worsening. we're seeing snow into the northeast, down to the south. we're talking about the heavy rain starting to fill in. we have a pattern here, a moisture pulling in from the gulf and also that cold air diving down from canada. today is the day these two systems get close together when we start to get that big mess as far as your travel plans. notice in the southeast, anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rain closer to the gulf. it's spreading into the carolinas and virginia, talking about a wintry mix and in between. over a foot of snow expected. it's around the lakes and tapering off as you get back through kentucky and tennessee. why are people getting rain, why are people getting snow? go back to the basics. you're on the front side of the low, out of the south, cold winds from canada will bring the snow and wintry mix. let's take it da

. >>> let's get a check with the forecast with indra petersons. >> we are talking about snow on the west coast and that eventually impact us by this weekend. so pay attention. we are talking about a cold enough system to produce over a foot of snow today in colorado. also around wyoming and notice even a little bit left over towards mammoth. the system is making its way south and producing the snow and something else to notice on the back side of this out into the ocean in hawaii. the stream of moisture going towards the west coast. once we bring you in closer you see the moisture is coming out and then wrapping around this low. we are talking about heavy rain in the southwest. this is a big story as we go through the weekend with a lot of flooding concerns in through the deserts. now the system will eventually make its way to the midwest today and see the showers and unfortunately, washington, illinois, today, looking for the thunderstorms to cruise into their area. the same system will continue farther through the east by friday and saturday and bring the mid lanth light showers. look

indra petersons is back from vacation. we are so happy to have you back from vacation. >> thank you, guys. ready for a big change and some cold air. you'll notice a lot of winds. a cold front is expected to pass through the region. strong winds gusting from minnesota all the way through new england overnight tonight. we are talking about 20 to 40-mile-per-hour winds and that always happens when we are looking for change and we know what is. the jet stream really dipping down and bringing a lot of cold air with it. let's take a look at the front as it makes its way across the country and we are seeing snow flurries and see more of that especially if you're around the lakes. here is the frontal system through the ohio valley and overnight through the northeast. heavier amounts of snow across the lakes and rain through the ohio valleys. remember, it's a cold system so, for the most part, it's usually moisture starved unless it's off of the lakes and getting moisture there. 3 to 5 inches off lake erie and maybe 1 to 3 inches a

we have indra peterson. so let's begin with indra, she's in coraopolis, pennsylvania. >> reporter: you can see a couple inches of snow just overnight. and i want to show what you is behind me. this is what so many travelers will be having to deal with today. just take a look at the highways. the slick roads are out there. and we mentioned this is only going to be the toughest time of this entire storm period this morning. so all those travelers that are trying to get out ahead of the storm, they will be dealing with the heaviest rain and the heaviest snow. take a look at the radar, you can see how many millions will be empaimpacted by this. if you're close r to the coastline, you're seeing the heavy rain. on the back side of it, we're seeing the snow. at times it's coming down pretty good out there. even ohio they got 6 to 8 inches of snow. just north of us here, already 10 inches of snow. and more of it is on the way. this low is actually still creeping up to the north. so slowly making its way up to the no

meteorologist indra petersons is here with this really sad pictures. >> it really is. we were talking who calls it similar to being a tornado? that is what it was like an ef-5 tornado and it's over your house for seconds and continues to move on. >> they said it was four hours long. >> this stays in place and exactly what it is. another system in the area today. from the morning center it is a high risk. the philippines have their own governmental agency and named this tropical depression zoraida. we are talking about from 6 to 10 inches of additional rains. winds about 35 miles an hour and perspective this wouldn't typically be a big deal. they are used to heavy systems in this region. they are trying to recover and any additional rain at this point in time is extremely difficult. we are still looking at the heaviest portion of rain currently tapering off for them tonight and drying out as we get through wednesday. easiest way to see that is the water vapor satellite. here is where the moisture is and behind it some dry air will be filling in where you see that yellow

cnn's indra petersons is in new york to tell us where the storm is heading now. good morning. >> good morning, carol. the storm is definitely now making its way into the northeast mid-atlantic. just to emphasize, 173 reports of wind damage and even five tornadoes reported yesterday in louisiana and even in illinois. a massive storm moved through the midwest overnight wreaking havoc on halloween for millions and leaving at least two people dead in its path. heavy rain and strong winds as high as 40 miles per hour toppled tree after tree, even flipping these semis on their side in missouri, at least ten structures destroyed in northern arkansas, in central texas more than 1,000 homes were evacuated as rivers and creeks overran their banks. the national weather service reported more than a foot of rain across the area. emergency lifeboats and helicopters rescued dozens stranded on rooftops. >> water came too fast. there wouldn't have been time to get the people out of the houses. >> hundreds of homes and cars left partially submerged. >> if they don't know how to cr

indra petersons is here with more on the crazy weather moving across the country. good morning. >> good morning. it's something we call the pineapple express, there's so much moisture fueling into the southwest, i'm going to zoom you out wide and you can see the source came from hawaii, hence the name pineapple express. never a good thing. it means a lot of rain in a sort period of time. look at the current rain heading in towards the phoenix area, that is the concern, the same thing that was out in the high deserts in california and looks like that will be the threat as we go through the weekend as the system sags to the south. there are two parts to the system, one is going to be the heavy rain and look at this. they're expecting another three to five, even six inches of rain possible t may not sound a lot to you but in the desert southwest where the ground is drier, that is too much rain so flood warnings will be out as we go through the weekend. also about two to four inches there around the four corners. so that's the first side of the system. the other is the

our meteorologist indra petersons is right in the middle of one of the most hard-hit areas, the town of washington, illinois. most of us think of tornado season being the spring. this seems very unusual. how rare is an outbreak like this so late in the year? >> reporter: you literally just nailed it. typically in november we see about 50 tornadoes across the entire nation for the entire month. now we're talking about 68 tornadoes just yesterday, and to put that in perspective we had a high risk yesterday, only the second of the season and typically we see those in the spring time. we really had all these elements come together and you can see especially now that the sun is up the dinkind of damage we are looking at. you can literally see cars overturned, even semitrucks overturned. look at this google map and compare what this looked like just 24 hours ago. these aren't trailer parks. we're talking about two-story wide framed buildings that are unrecognizable this morning. you can actually see a couple people here behind me surveying the damage, so difficult in these morning hours. y

she's in for indra petersons. she has the forecast for us. >> we are looking at a frontal system, very vigorous. it's produced as much as 8 inches of snowfall across portions of the midwest. it marches towards the east. places like detroit, st. louis and dallas, the frontal system makes its way towards the eastern seaboard, new york, boston, atlanta, you're due for wet weather and here it comes in the form of the frontal system with much colder air moving in behind it. in the meantime for this afternoon, those temperatures will be fairly mild, running a little bit above normal. you could see potentially heavy rainfall from the ohio river valley down towards the tennessee river valley. a couple of inches of rainfall expected across that region and behind this weather system we'll also see pretty gusty winds. maybe on the order of 25 to 30 miles per hour. here's what that wet weather will, toronto, chicago, st. louis, eventually making its way to new york city, charlotte and atlanta, coming up for thursday and movin

let's get over to indra petersons. other than the political storm clouds gathering over the nation's capital, what do you see out there. >> the last few hours of cold are this morning. after this, empg will feel better as we will be warming up. nonethele nonetheless, it is cold right now. new york city barely above the freezing mark at 33. pittsburgh in the 20s, detroit, right now you're in the 20s. it's warmer in minneapolis right now than it is for many in the ohio valley and the east coast. this will quickly change, though. keep in mind, into the south, same thing. look at these numbers and the 20s and temperatures below freezing. atlanta, 30 degrees right now. with that, yes, we have freeze warnings. again, it should be the last day they this. the reason for it, the dome of high pressure, bringing the cold arctic air. with that we pull in all the warm air from the gulf and the temperatures will rebound nicely. a good 10, almost 15 degrees warmer that we saw yesterday, especially into the northeast and even into the

let's get to karen mcginnis in for indra petersons with the forecast. what do you see out there. >> we have an approaching frontal still. this will move in and out fairly quickly. that's the good news. we're starting to see some of the delays as a frontal system edges across the region and in the forecast going into late in the day on friday. behind it we could see lake-effect snow. it's going to be very isolated area. but already for the new york city area, laguardia, we're expecting hour delays there, ground delays, also in philadelphia as the approaching frontal system will be a rainmaker but not just rain. it's going to be fairly blustery behind this weather system as well. right now, the bulk of that precipitation from syracuse towards punxsutawney, pittsburgh, cincinnati and cleveland. gradually making its way into washington, d.c., into new york, also into boston. as i mentioned the winds behind this, expected to be out of the west and the northwest blowing in, as we go into the afternoon, up to 35 miles per hour. generally speaking, as i mention

. >> indra petersons who did terrific reporting in the tornado zone is back with us. how does the weather look today? >> this is what we were concerned about the last few days, they had the clear blue skies, it was cold, but they knew what was coming. the they're talking heavier rain so unfortunately not a good situation for them. and for the weekend very cold temperatures out. there what is going on out there? very mild for the eastern half of the country. but a system making their way to the south. notice this one bringing all the cold air to the midwest. of course, we're looking at heavy rain and snow through the sierras and wyoming and colorado. we're going to tract systems that make their way across. first notice a lot of snow picking up out of that system, but as it makes its way across, we're going to be talking about heavier rain by the middle of the week. especially in the midwest. that's the concern we're talking about. the other side is temperatures, we are talking a good 20 degrees below normal. now, today, you're not looking at it being too bad. but this

jennifer gray is in for indra petersons with your thanksgiving forecast. >> it is cold across a large portion of the country, but at least we are staying dry. there is a lot of sunshine out there and the parade looks like a go as far as those balloons go. we have sustained winds of about 18 miles per hour, with gusts up to 29. that's the forecast and that is definitely underneath the criteria for letting those balloons fly. i think we're good to go. it's going to be cold, temperatures 31 degrees and feeling even colder. right now, temperatures in new york city, 30 degrees, 31 in philly, temperatures in d.c. around 30 degrees, and 32 in boston. winds at new york around 9 miles per hour with gusts up to 25, and we're seeing winds about 10 to 15 miles per hour across the northeast, with gusts anywhere from 25 to 30 miles per hour. when you fablctor in the temperature plus the winds you get the windchill, it is cold, 22 degrees is what it feels like in the city right now, feeling like 22 in washington. pittsburgh you feel like 9 degrees right now, and even the deep south, feeling the chil

. >> indra petersons is back from washington, illinois. what do you know this morning. >> definitely mild for this half of the country. let's take a look at the temperatures here. a good 5 to 10 degrees below normal. highs in d.c., 48 degrees. but again, this is all going to be changing thanks to stuff going on in the west. this is hawaii, that's california. look at this moisture stream coming from hawaii into the west coast. for that reason we know we're not only talking about rain but even heavy snow into the region. take a look at it. there's a couple systems in the region. this is the one that's going to impact the rest of the country. we are talking about cold air, arctic air is going to be diving down. here we go with the rain and snowmakers out there. flooding expected in arizona by the weekend. heavy snow, a foot of snow into the sierras. colorado and wyoming talking about a good foot of snow. let's watch those storms make their way across.today, especially in the central part of the country we'll be talking about heavy rain starti

indra petersons, tell us more, if you must. >> i'm not from the south. i'm from california. i'm learning along with the rest of you. we have the flurries here, the band making its way through new york, even new england. seeing just these little flurries. pretty easy, early for the season. you can see how many people have a chance, minimal dusting. a lot of it melting before it hits the ground. but, yeah, we're seeing this as far as the south today. unbelievable. that is a good month early before you see those flurries. where will we be seeing the heavier stuff? right off the lakes, even highs up to about seven inches in those regions. as that front goes through, we'll be talking about first rain switching to snow, which we've already seen early this morning. and then behind it, as it exits off, we're not looking for any rain or snow anymore but really the the cold and dry air. and it's going to stick around for some time. huge arctic high that started to bring cool temperatures in the midwest. today, it has expanded. yes, not only to the northeast but down to you, carol, int

let's go to indra peterson. what do we know? >> exactly. you take a look at these pictures. it's unbelievable. it's hard to imagine what could cause this devastation. we will put this in the perspective at home. we are talking winds 195 miles an hour, close to an ef-5 tornado t. difference there, it only lasts 15 minutes at that strength. we are talking at winds this high and then you add in a storm surge that would affect over 15 feet, unbelievable devastation. howling wind and pounding rain, super typhoon haiyan ravaged several islands in the philipines, huge winds swept ashore with gusts up to 235 miles per hour. >> during the height of the storm, you know, the scream of the wind was deafenning. we could hear thunderous crashes of debris flying through the air. >> reporter: what set this tropical cyclone apart is that it did not weaken much once it made landfall. the area consumed by the storm was massive. violent winds laid a path across the central philipines that covered an area the size of montana take a look at these satellite images, for a time, storm clouds covered

petersons, meteorologist. people say it happened so fast, it shocked us. how do so many tornadoes surprise people? >> pause they were moving so fast, 55 miles per hour. this is a nice springtime system, a system that was happening pretty much feeling like a wintertime system. let's talk about how rare this is. we had a high risk yesterday, only the second of the entire season, and let's kind of put it in perspective. in november this late in the season we typically only have 50 tornadoes for the entire country in the month of november. yesterday we had 81 reports in a single 24-hour period. sunday's dramatic tornado outbreak is one for the record books. 81 reported tornadoes across ten states, initial estimates show this mondayer ster storm cycle produced one ef4 tornado in illinois, the first ever recorded in the state's history in november, capable of packing wind gusts of up to 200 miles per hour. those gusts were powerful enough to annihilate entire neighborhoods and flip cars in indiana. the storm system
