let's get to nbc bay area's jeff ranieri. what it means for rain tomorrow. are we going to continue to see the type of showers? >> the storm system will hang on for the next 12 to 18 hours across the bay rare. decent tap of subtropical moisture boosting up the storm totals with the system a little more than it would have if we didn't get the southerly flow moving in. we get a fix on the doppler said. see a few embedded heavier areas of rainfall approaching the north bay coast line. that will eventually impact san rafael and highway 101 corridor. speaking of traffic on our major arteries, we'll take you to the south bay. this is where you are completely stuck in about every direction. we're going to turn on the traffic layer and what you'll notice as we middle this around is highway 101 near palo alto, back toward los altos, it is red here. 280, again on highway 101. down here toward san jose, you're pretty much locked in at this point as well. lots of red showing up throughout sections of the south bay due to the rainfall currently moving over. while it is n

nbc bay area's chief meteorologist jeff ranieri continues our coverage. jeff? >> with this storm system right now with the devastating wind and storm surge that could have been as high as 20 feet in some cases. we probably still won't know the true amount of damage from the storm system for weeks to come at this point. the good news for the philippines, it's moved off toward the west. the strongest portion of the storm cleared the islands but still a rough next 24 hours so when we compare this, good baseline would be strong storms back here across the united states like hurricane katrina. you can see that o the satellite loop right there then we'll superimpose this image of typhoon haiyan and see how much larger it is just in that breadth. the other thing you want to notice is the wind speeds. supertyphoon, again, some of the potential strongest winds ever recorded in a storm. that gusted potentially as high as 230 miles per hour. winds at landfall, 165. hurricane katrina, winds at 175. and at landfall, 129. then superstorm sandy, 115. and also at landfall, 95.

let's bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri here now with what we can expect tonight, jeff. >> that wind advisory now in effect all the way through friday morning. hills above 1,000 feet could see winds top 70 miles per hour. what i want to take you to is the east bay, some of these highly commuted corridors here, 580 and 680 under that wind advisory until friday morning as well. also for the north bay, anyone living here will be impacted by these winds that could gust as high as 40 miles per hour. you can see in santa rosa, petaluma, napa, sonoma as well. the other thing we want to get to is not only is it gusty out here but temperatures dropping into the 50s at this hour, so it is in fact giving us something a little bit rare here for the bay area, some windchill just because that air aloft is so cold, even if it's windy out here, it creates friction and helps warm up the air. that cold air aloft is winning out and we have windchills knocking down the current temperature by 5 degrees and also 3 to 5 degrees cooler than that ambient air temperature in napa. we'll detail who could h

. >>> let's get to jeff ranieri. it's looking really nice. >> yes, i'm doing a good job to make sure whatever sale you decide to pick, you're going to have some great weather for it no matter where it is. we have this coastal storm system offshore and it continues to look like this. we'll be giving us a drier forecast throughout that thanksgiving. let's get a look across the sky camera network and the thing you've probably noticed is that it was cloudy across the lot of the bay. temperatures in the upper 50s. out here in oakland looking right around emoryville, you can see traffic backed up on that 80 corridor. visibility down to about three miles from some of this haze. to san francisco, it's hard to see some of the city lights with some of this cloud cover moving in and currently, we have winds picking up out of the west at 23 miles per hour. . that's going to be better news for the air quality. for the morning, we are looking at some poor air quality. so, here is the reason why we have this big ridge of high press

for more, we go to jeff ranieri, who has been taking a good look at the effects of the typhoon. >> we're tracking this dangerous storm system, which has had multiple landfalls and still is not wavering in strength. there's outflow of the storm system, working in all the quadrants, and we're not expecting any weakening over the next 18 hours. so a category 5 making this a super typhoon, with wind gusts as high as 230 miles per hour. right now sustained winds at 185. we expect this to at least hold its strength as it heads towards vietnam on saturday. by 4:00 p.m., it will be consider a major storm, a category 3, winds at 115 miles per hour. as we go through sunday, we think the winds will be around 70 miles per hour. so right now it is at its strongest point but it will hold up strong in vietnam on saturday. we should also know, the intensity and the track of that storm system could change, so the next 24 to 36 hours will certainly be very crucial for anyone around the philippines as they watch this deadly storm. >> a lot of people here in the bay area are very concerned about that. >>> a

nbc bay area chief meteorologist jeff ranieri is tracking the wet weather. we begin with jodi hernandez in the elements in walnut creek. >> reporter: it's hard to see on television, but it is raining lightly in walnut creek, for folks driving home on highway 24 at the 680 interchange here in walnut creek, they're definitely giving the windshield wipers a workout. while the rainfall may not be adding up to much, for the most part, it's a welcome sight. >> i love the rain. >> reporter: that's the reaction of many as the pitter patter of rain drops returns to the bay area for the first time in months. catching some by surprise. >> who came repaired? who didn't? >> i came prepared. >> i didn't come prepared. i'm sorry. >> reporter: people broke out their umbrellas after a long dry spell. one they hope won't be repeated any time soon. >> i hope there's going to be more. this wasn't real accomplily muc rain. i was preparing for more. we need lots more so we don't go into a drought mode next summer. >> reporter: the return of the rain is making for slick conditions
