jim sciutto in geneva, candy crowly in washington. and jim acosta in the white house. and any reactions from the israelis in jerusalem? >> we haven't heard 234ig but the cabinet will meet here in about four and a half hours time and we are expecting an official statement there. but the israelis have opposed any deal from the beginning. they put a full-court press to convince the members of the p5 plus one that this was a bad deal and were going to try to stop it from going forward. i pushed about what happens next and what if the deal does go forward and there was a lot of ambiguity there. but on friday, the israeli defense minister talked about the negotiations in geneva and he said we think that this deal on the table is a bad one and even if it is signed there will be a lot to do afterwards to bring the iranian regime face to face with the bomb or survival. those are harsh words coming from the israeli defense minister. they said all options are on the table. >> and the prime minister was on "state of the union" last sunday and he is bitterly opposed to this deal. w

thanks very much, jim sciutto in geneva. let's bring in the president's deputy national security advisor joining us from the white house. tony, thanks very much for coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> now that the agreement was signed early sunday morning, geneva time, when will the sanctions actually start being lifted, those sanctions that are going to be lifted for the iranians? >> first of all, what's important to understand with regard to sanctions is throughout the six-month period, all of the core sanctions stay in place and indeed, continue to be implemented. the oil sanctions, the banking sanctions, the pressure on iran will actually continue to grow. they will get some modest and very controlled relief that will be doled out over the six months to make sure they are making good on their commitments and that process will start probably sometime around the new year. >> $7 billion they will get over the next six months, they will begin to feel some of the benefits early, early in the new year, not in december. >> o

jim sciutto is live in geneva for us. what can you tell us? >> reporter: negotiators doing battle this morning at the bargaining table. the first significant meeting between the iran foreign minister and eu foreign policy, members of the eu team tell us this morning they are locked in tough negotiations. the senior administration officials have been talking to say, the west is unified now in their position. they have gotten over whatever disagreements broke up the last round of talks and up to the iranians. the u.s. officials are doing their own round of management and including secretary of state john kerry. let's listen to what he had to say. >> we will not allow this agreement, should it be reached, and i say should it be reached, to buy time or to allow for the acceptance of an agreement that does not properly address our core fundamental concerns. >> reporter: the core fundamental concerns are about iran's enrichment of u rainian. the west appears comfortable to that with strict limitations and only certain levels well below grade but the

jim sciutto is in washington with more on that part of the story. jim we've been talking about through the day, the tsa is the frontline, right? they are not allowed to carry weapons. it seems to me they were completely defenseless. were they prepared for anything like this? >> reporter: this is one of the most protected airports in the world, partly because it's been a target of terror threats before in 2000 there was an al qaeda threat, a shooting in 2002 at the ellal desk there. more than 2,000 police officers, the tsa officers are not armed. i spoke to the head of their union today and he said that's by choice. they prefer to leave the shooting to the officers who are trained for the shooting. that's the l.a. airport police. there are other armed officers that are patrolling airports. air marshalls that as we know often on flights but also in the airports. the department of homeland security also has armed agents in the airports. so up to this point the t sa hasn't seen the need or requested to arm its agents. i was getting twitter messages from

. >>> i'm joined now by jim sciutto, cnn's chief national security correspondent and has followed these talks from the very beginning. jim, so six months, where do we go from here in terms of the next step in this deal? >> well, arguably this is the tougher time. they've had weeks of very difficult talks to get to a temporary agreement, a temporary halt to the activities here. now they're going to have that six months to talk to get longer term agreements, longer term limits. you look at centrifuges. iran agreed to add no more centrifuges. now they get to the issue of dismantling some of them. iran agreed not to keep building it. they have to get to the discussions of tearing it down. they hit the pause button. now they're going to have to be talking about hitting the delete button. that's going to be some tougher negotiations over the next several months. >> one of the things about this agreement is it was not made between anybody in the neighborhood of iran and not the saudis, not the other arab gulf states, not the israelis. and this has raised a lot of issues because we have yet to

our national security correspondent jim sciutto is in washington tonight. jim is there any indication at all connection to any international terrorist group? i've heard of none at this point. >> reporter: i have been in touch with the national counterterrorism center. they see no indication of ties to international terrorism. they're not ruling out domestic terrorism. they don't see any cases of that, either. i suppose it's how you define it. he was targeting tsa agents. he had anti-government literature on his person. he shut down an airport. you could call that a form of terrorism but they're not calling it that at this point. >> there's still a lot we don't know and a lot still being investigated, but does it seem like the tsa was prepared to handle a situation like this? >> reporter: it's interesting. the airport security just three weeks before did an active shooter training event for l.a.x. they took over a whole unoccupied terminal at a nearby airport, put 300 officers through an event just like this one. many of those who took part today say that tr

jim sciutto is in geneva and covering the talks for us. this was 60 days of marathon bargaining. you called it a bit after wild ride when we were talking earlier. tell us about it. >> reporter: right up until the deal was signed after 3:00 in the morning on sunday, there were doubts that this deal was going to be made. the iran deputy foreign minister at the time said we are 98% of the way there. but that last 2%, those last stickler issues were really the difficult ones to get over but they did. the announcement came through as news breaks these days in a tweet, four simple words, we have an agreement. secretary of state john kerry came out and said it makes the world safer. as you said the agreement is only for six months and allow time to negotiate a longer term status for iran's nuclear program and really during these six months unprecedented limits on iran's program. it limits the degree to which you can enrich uranium to well below the level needed to make a bomb and allows intrusive inspections on all nuclear sites on a daily basis so a real achievement for diplomacy but j

our chief national security correspondent jim sciutto is in geneva. he has been following talks for us. what is the latest, jim? what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, new developments coming by the minute. western official telling me just a few moments ago that a deal with iran regarding its nuclear program could come as soon as tonight. they are negotiating here in geneva through the night, into the early morning hours. we know secretary kerry is going to arrive tomorrow morning. we also just got confirmation now that the british foreign secretary, william hague, as well as the french foreign minister, they are arriving, joining the russian foreign minister who arrived earlier today. just a few minutes ago i spoke to the deputy spokesperson for the state department and asked her with kerry coming, does that mean he believes he can close that deal. here's what she had to say. >> secretary kerry arriving tomorrow morning. is he coming because he believes he can close this deal? >> keep in mind washington is eight hours away and the secretary had to

jim sciutto is covering the negotiations in geneva and is joining us now. jim, how are the ayatollah's comments playing in the midst of this sensitive moment in these negotiations? >> reporter: well, it's a problem. from the start of these talks, american diplomats, western diplomats, have talked about how iran's tone had changed. it's become serious, constructive, even friendly. this of course stands in sharp contrast to that. the ayatollah calling benjamin netanyahu, the israeli prime minister, the rabid dog of the region, saying we will quote, slap our opponents in the face in a way that they won't forget. we know that some of this, a lot of this is meant for a domestic audience, but really, a sense from american and western diplomats here that this goes too far. here's what samantha power, the u.s. ambassador to the u.n., said on "new day" this morning. >> let me obviously condemn the comments of the ayatollah which are abhorrent. what i will say is that we have decades of mistrust partly on the basis of comments like this, partly on the basis of the co

i'm jim sciutto. you're in "the situation room." >>> if you could be a fly on the wall for one meeting today here in washington, the one to pick just wrapped up at the white house. president obama sitting down with the heads of some of the nation's largest health insurance companies. he's asking them to take part in a controversial and high priced fix to an obama care flaw that's caused millions of people to have their policies canceled. the president now wants those plans extended for a year, but on capitol hill, house republicans want them reinstated permanently, potentially fatal blow to obama care and one that some democrats crossed the aisle today to vote for. cnn's chief congressional correspondent dana bash is there today. dana, how big a blow for the president today? >> reporter: well, look, the prospect of losing this vote in a big way is exactly what drove the democratic leaders here earlier in the week to plead with obama officials for the president to come up with some kind of fix to this

jim sciutto, thank you so much. >>> i'm joined now by the spokesman for the israeli prime minister. mark, i first want to ask, do you think the u.s. is being foolish, do you have any hope that this could yield something positive? >> we would urge skepticism. we would urge caution. we are very concerned that the iranians want the sanction regime lifted and they want one little hole in if sanctions. when there's one hole in the sanctions, the whole wall will come tumbling down. then there will be no pressure on them whatsoever to give up their military nuclear program. that's our fear. >> some might say an imperfect deal would be better than none at all. what do you say to that? >> secretary kerry said exactly the opposite, that no deal is better than a bad deal. what the iranians are looking for is a bad deal which endangers the whole world. ultimately, they want the sanctions lifted and they want to keep being able to enrich uranium. they want to have breakout capacity so they can have a nuclear bomb at the time and place of their choosing in the future. we simply can't allow that.

we reached out and jim sciutto has more. how close are the two sides to an actual deal? is this going to happen? >> it looks like it could be real. you have a diplomatic flurry today. the foreign ministers of every country involved in these talks, secretary kerry, britain, france, germany, russia getting to geneva. you get the sense they wouldn't take this diplomatic risk and show up if one, it would make a difference or bridge the final gaps that remain but also a deal wasn't imminent because they are sticking their necks out right to be there now as is secretary kerry. you get the sense there is real progress, momentum here but secretary kerry said there are gaps they have to bridge. >> what might a deal actually look like? >> we've got a pretty good sense. they are calling it an interim deal because any agreement would be in two phases. a first phase over six months and each side gives something up. the iranians wouldn't enrich uranium up to 20% and they would also not activate the most advance center fuses that spin it into weapons grade and not open the iraq heavy w

let's bring in jim sciutto. jim, what's the latest? >> we have covered enough of these to know they can fall apart at the last minute. but you do have a flurry of diplomatic activity now. secretary kerry coming in, the british, the french, the germans, now lavrov, the russian foreign minister, coming tomorrow. you get the sense they wouldn't be taking this political risk going there if they didn't think that the final disagreements were bridgeable. that said, secretary kerry did say there were still some gaps and they have to bridge the gaps and the talks at least will extend tomorrow so we have to watch over the weekend. >> great point. normally you wouldn't have heavy hitters come in to have a deal explode at the last second. what kind of deal are we talking about? >> they're calling this an interim deal. first step over six months while they negotiate a longer term deal. both sides are giving something up so the iranians would suspend enrichment of uranium up to 20%. they would still keep going at 3.5% but not 20%. >> 3.5% would be

let's go to cnn's chief national security correspondent jim sciutto in geneva. jim, the gathering of additional world leaders is being called maybe hasty. what's the latest on the talks today? >> well, good morning, victor. a real sense of momentum here. you now have all the heavyweights in place. the top diplomats from the permanent security council, plus, secretary of state john kerry, as i was walking in a few minutes ago, i saw the british foreign secretary arrive. when he arrived he said we're not here necessarily because the deal is done. he said that sides are very close. here's how he described the state of play just a few moments ago. >> there's a huge amount of agreement. and it remains the case, a huge amount of progress has been made in recent weeks. and the state of this negotiation is entirely different from a few months ago with iran. that's positive. but some the difficult areas remain difficult. >> and one of those areas, apparently, is the amount of sanctions relief given to iran in exchange for the restriction that's would be placed on its nuc

jim sciutto is in washington with the latest. what are you hearing, jim. >> reporter: the outlines of the most significant nuclear deal with iran in more than ten years. the spokesman saying secretary kerry going to, quote, help narrow the differences in negotiations but you have the british, the french, the german foreign ministers joining kerry in geneva along with the iranian foreign minister. these very strong signs that they are getting close here. we have the broad outlines of what they're describing as an interim deal, an initial step over six months with both sides offering confidence building measures, iran agreeing to a suspension, a partial suspension of uranium enrichment in exchange for the relaxation of some economic sanctions among the possible relaxing as the west considering unfreezing some of iran's assets overseas and allowing iran access to international gold markets. they're saying this would be the first stage, lasting about six months while the sides continue talks for a longer term, final status agreement

sciutto, who is in geneva along with foreign affairs reporter, elise, right next to me. so john kerry is now coming. what does that mean in terms of how close we are to a deal? >> reporter: well, you now have the two giants of these negotiations coming here, kerry arriving tomorrow, the russian foreign minister, sergay lavrov, touched down a couple hours ago. you really get the sense they wouldn't come unless they were close. in fact, we are hearing they are coming to close this deal, not just to show up. it fits with the optimism i have been hearing from both sides, from the iranian side, from western officials all day. that said, u.s. officials telling us that there are still gaps to be narrowed which has been their favorite phrase of these negotiations. you get the sense kerry is coming to finalize closing those gaps, not just coming for the photo op. >> can kerry make a difference? he's not here apparently, according to jim, not there just to sign on the line that is dotted. there is actually still problems. >> he certainly seems to think he has and that's often the
