obviously lapd would be the primary. you've got fbi, tsa, homeland, everybody would be involved at this point. bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. >> exactly. everybody is involved. law enforcement is a team effort here. los angeles airport police, lapd, you're going to also have the joint terrorism task force. that basically is made up of agencies you've described. looks like we might have had a hero tsa officer here wounded. he might have tried to confront or stop the gunman. police in l.a., i've been out there and worked with them before, they are very good. it's a large facility with a lot of police. so quickly this guy was taken down where he couldn't hurt a multitude of people. >> the faa is telling nbc news there is a ground stop in effect for lax. the flights are on the ground bound for lax, will be held on the ground. you can see we've got air yeeri. this happened 12:30 eastern time, 9:30 a. time, pacific time. because of the east coast delays, east coast bad weather, there were a lot of people in those te

and that will fall under the jurisdiction of the fbi, but assisted with the lapd, the l.a. airport police, will all work on this together. depending on what condition that wounded person, wounded subjects are, what kind of condition they are in, if a death has occurred. a lot of different things come into play with the investigation. but it will be worked, jointly, i'm sure with lapd and the fbi. >> casey wian, our reporter is there, getting more information. what else are you learning, cas casey? >> i don't know if you can see the woman way off in the distance wheeling her luggage. she's an arriving passenger from jfk. just came in to one of the other terminals today. she's got a four-mile walk, she says, to her house in marina del rey, but there's no taxi cabs, no way for her to get off the airport, no way for her husband to come and get her, get close to the airport, so she's going to walk, as far as she can, until she meets up with her husband. now can see also the traffic jam and how you have an lapd vehicle trying to navigate his way through the incredible traffic jam

the gunman is believed to have acted alone according to lapd. according to police, this individual, the suspect, pulled an assault rifle out of his bag, that's the words of the police, assault rifle, and opened fire. he charged back into the screening area and walked well inside the airport terminal before security ultimately caught up with him. an intelligence officer briefed by the lapd says the gunman was shot in the chest multiple times. now that shooter is said to be in custody. two sources tell cnn the shooter is not, repeat, not a current or former tsa officer, despite reports from other media. airport officials say l.a.x. is technically still open but it's only accepting flights at less than half the normal rate. any flight coming out of l.a.x. or through l.a.x. will be significantly late. officials are hoping passengers just stay away from the airport at this point at least for the rest of the afternoon. as for the passengers already inside terminal three, many are trapped for now in other terminals. they will all have to be rescreened

the lapd respond the, fire department setting up triage. you can imagine with something like this, the fbi will also get involved at some point if they are not already there on the ground assessing the situation. again, still developing. hopefully this is all over. we don't know that yet. >> as you mentioned, century boulevard has been shut down as investigators get there to the scene. lapd tactical units there arriving. this is terminal 2 and 3. this is such a busy weekend, busy halloween that really hasn't stopped since overnight. a lot of police incidents and the latest at lax waiting to get word on what happened with the travelers inside. >> waiting to get information on injuries. assignment debt getting this, a 45-year-old male going to ucla harvard medical center, 29-year-old male shot in the leg going to westwood. a third victim with a sprained ankle. so if this is the extent of the injuries, hopefully that is good news. kben, these are preliminary reports coming in. we don't know how widespread the incident was. matching up with the

they notified lapd. those officials visited the suspects home and missed him by 45 minutes. he opened fire at lax killing a tsa worker. witness accounts are emerging from that deadly day. >> we were up in security. we heard the gun shot. everybody in security hit the ground. a lot of folks were scrambling. there was a pause. i looked down the escalator and saw the gunmen. . >> ciancia was dropped off by a friend. that friend had no knowledge of his plan. he is an unemployed motorcycle mechanic now facing charges of murder and violating laws at an international airport. >>> a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was 6 miles deep. 165 miles off the coast near ferndale. >>> a man made threats on a jet blue flight. he was making concerning statements. the man's luggage determined everything was fine. no information on the sub. one passenger said he screamed this plane will go down. >>> the chp said a man got out of a car and ran into traffic. he was hit by a minivan. traffic was blocked for a half hour while the scene was cleared. he was injuried and transported to s.f. general. condition i

but the lapd missed intercepts him by minutes. paul ciancia's family is making their first statement. >> reporter: the spokesperson read a statement from the family of the international airport shooting suspect. >> paul is our son and brother. we will continue to love him and care for him. we will support him during the difficult times ahead. >> reporter: officials say 23- year-old paul ciancia walked into terminal three of the airport on friday. pulling a suitcase with a bag on top. there were holes in both pieces of luggage hiding the rifle inside. he shot gerardo gonzalez killing him. airport police shot him four times. according to court documents, ciancia left a letter saying he made the conscious decision to try to kill tsa officers in order to instill fear. he also talked about how easy it was to take weapons into the airport. like many passengers no one could tell was stopped at a police checkpoint as he entered the airport. >> i'm a little bit nervous. but honestly since 9/11, air travel is always a little edgier than it

about 20 feet past that is an lapd officer who is armed. so there is at least one officer per check point throughout the entire airport. >> since you are familiar with this particular airport? >> yeah. >> does it appear based on that photograph of the weapon on the ground that the shooter breached what we would know as nmetal detectors? >> that is in the boarding area. i recognize it because i have taken virgin america flight right out of the gates that are maybe 10 to 20 feet from where the rifle is lying on the ground. it looks to be gate 35 through 39 just from my experience i would say, and that would mean the gunman was able to get through security and ran an additional 30 feet into this large area -- it's a almost a tennis-shaped area, and that's where the gates are. it's a relatively small terminal too, and if this one gunman was shooting at people and running or walking calmly through the terminal, it wouldn't take him all that long to get to the gate area, and it is at the gate area where the suspect was -- was taken into custody o

he was killed by officers from lax police and lapd. the second thing that we believe suggests he was targeting tsa agents, law enforcement officials saying as he was running down the terminal, he essentially was asking people hey, are you with tsa and when they said no he continued running, making his way down. third thing, also, information, there were texts that apparently he was sending in the days leading up to the attack we were just learning in which he was sending them to his father and brother and there was some concern about his situation about how -- what was going through his mind at the time. so these three things suggest in fact, he was looking to shoot tsa agents. that's the premise law enforcement officials are investigating. that's what they tell us, anderson. >> earlier reports said he was shot multiple times but survived. you're saying the shooter is dead? >> no, no, i didn't say that. the shooter was hit three times in the chest, center mass, hit multiple times but we don't know the condition. we've been trying to fi

they were entirely reliant on the airport police and the lapd. those are the officers that ultimately took this shooter down. it will be interesting to see in the weeks to come whether or not the security surrounding the tsa check points at airports around the country are going to be beefed up after what just happened at l.a.x. now one more thing i want to talk about, flight delays and cancellations. there are, of course, lots and lots of delays right now in and out of l.a.x. here at reagan and at the other washington area airports, dulles, bwi, all these airports at the moment are operating normally, no major delays or cancellations to report, but remember the longer l.a.x. is closed the greater the ripple effect will be at airports across the country. so if you're planning on traveling tonight, even if you're not going to l.a.x., if you're traveling, you'll want to check your flight status before heading to the airport. >> of course, we are continuing to follow all the latest developments as we learn more about the gunman. let's go to derek now

ciancia's father called the lapd. they asked them to check on him. >> the call came in at 10:06 to the communications dispatch center. the officers were at the scene in the driveway in about six minutes. >> reporter: ciancia was not there, he had about six minutes earlier already started his rampage at terminal three. >> we weren't putting two and two together at that time. >> reporter: his father also called the local police chief in new jersey. chief alan cummings then called the lapd, and was told the officers had just cleared ciancia's apartment because he was not there. the next call was from a reporter who told him paul ciancia was the gunman. >> i put the phone down and basically said, oh, my god. i couldn't believe it. i was in shock. >> reporter: seconds later, ciancia's father saw the tv coverage and called him. >> he said, am i seeing this on tv? is this my son in the shooting at the airport? it was an emotional wreck, can you imagine seeing somebody on tv and something like that. i think he was just in sho

the circumstances that may have happened, the lapd chief yesterday was saying that officers are trained to actually shoot them to bring them down and to disable them and eventually hold that individual accountable. so they wouldn't have been aiming for his legs. one of the witnessese spoke to say the gunman was actually firing wildly at the time and firing very fast. so that could be one of the reasons if he did indeed end up with a head shot. the hospital has not confirmed his injuries and nobody on the record has confirmed his injuries. we just had a press briefing from the airport police chief, pat gannon, and he was. >>ing what happened in the -- -- he was describing what happened in the moment of the tsa shooting. this is what he had to say just a few moments ago. take a listen. >> our whole posture for security is high-profile. we have a security strategy that we employ every single day. obviously today and for the foreseeable future we will continue a very high-profile at the curb and anywhere in those ticketing areas and anywhere on our campuses. >> chief gannon talking about th
