>> reporter: good morning to you, jon and marla. yes, as you can see behind me, we're 680 northbound where we think we're starting to see some of that will get out of town traffic. people doing last-minute travel to get to their destinations for tomorrow. there are fewer people, however, hitting the roads this thanksgiving holiday, and it's not because of the price of gas. the price of a gallon of gas is actually dropped around 50 cents over the past few months, and if you compare the prices today with what they were at last thanksgiving, gas is still lower. right now we're averaging around $3.50 in the south and east bay per gallon of gas. $3.60. that's a drop of about 15 cents to 20 cents from last year. this according to triple-a. yet, triple-a predicts fewer californians hitting the road this week. 4.4 million are only supposed to be getting behind the wheel. that's about a 4% drop than last -- from last thanksgiving. what gives? well, triple-a believes it's unemployment and cash flow. people with little or no income saving what

marla tellez is in our newsroom with reaction from the u.s. state department and his family. good morning. >> good morning. we are hearing more from the son of 85-year-old merrill neuman and since my last report at 5:30 we learned that the inspiration behind his decision to visit north korea may have come from time spent there during the korean war. this according to his son jeffrey. here is a look at merrill who lives in a retirement community. his son telling the press his father spent three years as an infantry officer in the korean war but says his father never talked about his service and his son believes that neuman's time overseas spurred his desire to travel there. he says his dad along with a friend joined a tour group from beijing for the 10-day trip. his purpose was to be a tourist. it was on his final day on october 26 almost a month ago when he was allegedly taken into custody. he was on a plane when a uniformed officer asked to see his passport and pulled him off the plane. north korea has not confirmed his detainment. neither has the u.s. state department. it d

marla tellez has been monitoring this all morning long. what authorities are saying about a motive. >> good morning. authorities say they do not believe that richard shoop ever intended to hurt anyone other than himself when he walked into the garden state plaza mall and opened fire. here's a look at the0 20-year-od officials say shot himself in the head sometime early this morning. police say they found his body in a back corridor. officials recovered a note that was left with shoop's family. they are not calling it a suicide note but do say it expresses that an end is coming. the terror started just before the mall was set to close at 9:30 when police say shoop walked in carrying a modified ak-47 and he fired six shots. we learned he fired straight up toward the ceiling. that's why no one was hit and everyone did make it out alive. it was a terrifying ácéexperie. >> we were inside the store and i hear three shots. one next to the other next to the other. and i opened the front doors for the stores and i saw the security guard, all the

marla tellez has been monitoring the situation all morning long. she's in the newsroom now with the details on where that suspected gunman may have gotten his weapon. good morning. >> police say the 20-year-old got the gun he used to kill himself from his brother. this is all police are saying at this point. for most of us when we went to bed last night this gunman was still on the run and hundreds of customers and mall employees were trapped unsure if they would make it out alive. this came to an end when paramus police say they found richard shoop, here is a look at him, in a remote part of the mall with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. a note was found at the seen and it's clear shoop intended to commit suicide when he walked into the mall with a modified at 47 before the mall was set to close, and open fire. though he fired off more than six rounds no one was hit, everyone made it out alive. you can imagine it was a terrifying experience. >> we were inside the store and i hear three shots. one next to the other, one next to the other

marla tellez is in the newsroom with more on this afternoon's rally. good morning. >> good morning. the san jose state president is expected to talk about the pending criminal charges at the rally, also announcing campus forum designed to talk about racial tolerance at san jose state. the rally was spear headed by the silicon chapter of the naacp. the president is going to speak and urge the santa clara district attorney to enhance the charges that the four state. they face misdemeanor hate crime and battery charges for what they allegedly did to their black roommate. the naacp can'ts felony charges filed and also wants the d.a. to add false imprisonment. the prosecutors say the four used racial slurs, hung a confederate flag and placed a u-shaped bike lock around his neck and claimed to have lost the key. the alleged harassment began in august. since it has come to light students have been shell shocked. we caught up with a couple of students. >> in no way do they reflect the campus and the student body, trying to have bun. not letting that affect us. >> being a student we know tha
