i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. new video now from the philippines shows some of the damage from a super typhoon. haiyan could be the most powerful typhoon to ever make landfall any in the world. it's a category 5 with just incredible winds. kpix 5 meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking haiyan as it moves through the philippines and heads west. >> at its peak it has sustained winds of 195 miles per hour gusting to 235 miles per hour. that's when it came on landfall and so it's been devastating. we are not sure of all the damage that's caused. it's hard to get in there. right now it's a category 5 but weakened a little bit. sustained winds still 165 miles per hour gusts to 200 miles per hour but moving out of the west at 25 miles per hour. is he it is moving rapidly now. it's going to head back out over open waters probably going to be a category 4 when it makes landfall again near da nang in vietnam, a very dangerous deadly storm moving onshore. then should quickly weaken to a category 2 as we head in toward the

i' michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. anne makovec is on the scene of breaking news at a fire in alameda. firefighters had to rescue a person, i understand, trapped on a balcony of that burning apartment. >> reporter: i spoke from one person who jumped from a second floor balcony. everybody appears to be okay. here's a closer look at the fire which started about 2:45 a.m. on briggs avenue. there are four apartments in the building. several people who live there believe it was started by a mentally ill man who lived there. he was taken to an institution and returned home yesterday. suddenly overnight they heard a small explosion coming from his second floor apartment. many saw smoke coming into their apartments. that is when the one woman i spoke with jumped off of her balcony. people are very nervous right now that everything they own has been destroyed because there is significant damage as you can see from this video to that building. we'll let you hear from some of the people who live here coming up in the next half ho

i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. time now is 6:31. happening today, dozens of spring semester classes are being taken off the schedule at san jose state. the university is facing yet another round of budget cuts. as kpix 5's cate caugiran reports, students will have fewer options and crowded classes yet again. cate. >> reporter: michelle, this also comes at a time where students are finalizing their plans for the spring term and now students and faculty here at san jose state university, their future is up in the air. a balancing act. department heads were told last week, slashing programs to keep the school afloat. sources tell kpix 5, those department leaders are planning to meet at 10:30 today to talk about another round of budget cuts to the tune of $16 million. for students an faculty, this will mean increased class sizes, classes dropped and potential layoffs. nome some professors may have to teach classes outside their expertise. this is a shock to students and faculty because last year california voters approved proposition 30

i'm michelle griego. frank is on assignment. right now, a rally is being held at san jose state. kpix is live on campus with more on the hate crime investigation and the response from students. kate? >> reporter: michelle, this rally was organized by the university's black student union. take a closer look right here. they are gathering on behalf of the victim who according to the san jose mercury, from santa cruz. you see officers staged out here, a handful of students in the middle of the quad. the merc also reported the students in this case downplayed these incidents as pranks and jokes, but the students we spoke to say they went too far. the suspects were roommates in one of these campus village buildings where they lived in an eight-person suite throughout the fall term. the list of allegations against the freshmen are agregious. the district attorney says the suspects reportedly put a u- shaped bike lock around their black roommate's neck. the victim was injured when he refused to be locked up a second time. the da also said the three suspects allegedly subjected the victi

i am frank mall cot. >> i am michelle griego. time now is 6:30. new this morning the san francisco giants may have to share their ballpark with the oakland a's next season. mark kelly in san francisco where the vettics could be playing neck year. it's an idea being pushed by major league baseball? >> reporter: that's right. the mlb is really turning up the heat on these negotiations. so if the a's and the coliseum don't come to some sort of agreement on a new short-term lease, the a's can leave oakland entirely and take up a new temporary two-year home right here at at&t park. sources close to the negotiations told the "san francisco chronicle" major league baseball is making its demands known to coliseum officials. the mlb wants a shorter two- year lease extension for the a's. not the five to eight-year deal the coliseum put on the table. a shorter lease would give the a's an opening to move to san jose if those legal hurdles can be cleared. and if that short-term lease is denied, sources say the a's could cut the cord with the coliseum entirely
