. >> reporter: i'm peggy fox in fairfax. the attorney general's race hangs in the balance and here election workers are trying to figure out why thousands of votes may not have been counted. an emergency meeting was called after serious questions arose about absentee ballot totals, totals that didn't make sense. >> the discrepancies were first noticed by a staff member at congressman gerry connolly's office. >> we think there could be as many as 3,000 ballots that are not accounted for. >> reporter: 3,000 ballots could swing the outcome of the close attorney general's race which now has republican mark obenshain leading over democrat mark herring by only about 700 votes. >> basically due to human error which is what happens sometimes. there's potentially a few thousand votes at stake, so it could impact the election. >> reporter: connolly's staffer knew when people go to the trouble of asking for an absentee ballot, they almost always send it in. the return rate is usually close to 90%, but in the 8th congressional district

peggy fox looks at some of those important issues. >> reporter: here are some issues you might care about. last year virginia lawmakers passed the first transportation funding measure in 27 years. that's a key issue in one of the tightest races for the house of delegates in mclean's district 34. >> the issue of transportation i differ with her on is her vote against funding the transportation bill. >> reporter: democrat kathleen murphy is challenging republican barbara comstock. >> the transportation bill did put extra and more taxes on northern virginia than any other place in the state. that was my major concern. now that it's passed i'm going to make sure northern virginia is going to get their congestion relief. >> reporter: comstock accused her opponent of wanting to raise taxes. murphy criticizes comstock for helping to kill the law limiting gun purchases in virginia for one a month. comstock said the law was watered down. >> there had been so many compels already long before i was in the legislature -- exemptions already long before i was in the legislature. >> reporter: comstock s

what finally hit me in pollock's art was the portable mural he did for the apartment house in which peggy guggenheim lived. that hit me. it was the first time i saw him go all over, repeat this way. i thought that was a great painting, and i began to follow pollock assiduously, you could say, after that. raised in the american southwest, pollock was influenced by indian sand painting, and in a sense, his works internalized the desert landscape itself. in new york, he studied the works of modern european masters, especially miro and picasso. i think he had his best run in '47, '48, '49, '50, what i call the "all over," when he spattered or dripped or whatever. about his art, pollock knew what he was about. he trusted his spontaneity in what they call automatic painting. but he was in control. he'd stop from time to time to see what he'd done. and then when a picture was finished, he'd go back and edit now and then. when it comes to abstract art, there's no subject matter, but there is content, and the two have to be distinguished. in other words, the presence or absence of a recognizable i
