randall pinkston, al jazeera. >> as randall mentioned, john f. kennedy is not the only death who is being remembered today. lee harry oswald also shot officer ti tippet. tell us more about the late officer tippet. >> reporter: yes, tony, he was an 11-year veteran of the dallas police officer on patrol looking for a burglary suspect. he sees oswald walking down the street. doesn't know anything about him. as you heard, oswald shot him four times. he was later found a couple of blocks away at the texas theater. he was immediately taken into custody for tippet's murder, and it would be hours later when he would become the suspect for kennedy's murder. because of the rain, wind, and cold they decided to bring the vigil here. joining us will be officers not just from dallas but from across the state, and j.d. tippet's widow who is expected to speak at the vigil. >> stay with us for our coverage of the assassination of president kennedy that will continue. we'll take a look at the conspiracy theories that still swirl around kennedy's death to this hour

and randall pinkston is at laguardia international airport. randall what is the board saying? >> well, so far a lot better than expected. there are only five airports with significant delay problems, meaning delays of more than 45 minutes. that's right here in new york, philadelphia, and inexplicably fort lauderdale, florida. everyone else is looking okay. this is what it looked like on tuesday in the south, and this is what it longs like today in the northeast. the storm system that started in california canceled hundreds of flights as it moved across the country, and while there have been some disruptions today, it has definitely not been as severe as anticipated. >> this morning we had a little bit of a lull in the weather, but the forecasters are telling us that the wind and rain is supposed to pick up again in the afternoon. so-so far we dodged a bullet. >> reporter: a system of going through security has eased long lines. >> those people eligible for tsa fast track can keep shoe their shoes, belts, and light outer wear on, as well as keep their computers in their bags. >

randall pinkston is in brooklyn following the election. what can you tell us? >> john, the count is still underway, but at this point it appears bill de blasio may have a landslide victory over republican joe lhota. what is really interesting is that new yorkers feel the city is in much better shape than it was 20 years ago when the first republican was elected mayor, giuliani followed by bloomberg. nonetheless they decided it was time for a change. minutes ago this auditorium was filled with people listening to the acceptance speech by bill de blasio. he made a strong reiteration of his primary campaign points that he was going to do what he could to close the income gap, to deal with trying to buy -- developers to buy into building affordable housing. he said that what the city needs to do is make sure that everyone has an opportunity to rise based on the strength of their abilities and their hard work and not their zip code. >> it doesn't matter where you were born, what you look like, what your religion is, or who you love. if you have brains and heart and

randall pinkston joins us from brooklyn. joe lotus said the numbers will shock everyone. why does he believe he has a shot to win? >> reporter: he's looking at the last 20 years under the republican leadership, giuliani and bloomberg. they've brought this place to a pretty good place. crime, murder rate is way down to levels that have not been seen since the 60s, and if the current trend continues new york city could see murder rates down as low as in the 50's. of course, all the election polls say that he will loose. >> what will the major policy differences between these two candidates? >> well, crime. they promise to stop the stop and frisk, which a lot of minorities hits them especially hard. the democratic candidate, bill de blasio said he will end stop and frisk. that's one major different. also de blasio comes from a liberal social activism background. he wants to do things that takes care of the poor, homelessness has doubled since 1994, de blasio wants to doing iser about that, and to build more affordable housing. those are his two big issues. >> on to detroit i
