that the officers involved were airport police at los angeles international airport, the los angeles police department has a large contingent of officers but the primary policing is provided by the airport police. at los angeles international airport, it's probably the most heavily policed airport in america. i travel through airports all the time. none of them has the visibility and level of security that is provided at lax, every baggage screening checkpoint has true uniformed officers at that baggage checkpoint, that's a level of security you don't see anywhere else. at that checkpoint, would have been on duty within a few feet where the shooting occurred two uniformed armed officers. as you go into the airport, you cannot go into the perimeter of the airport, if you will, the nine terminals, without seeing a significant number of uniformed officers aefrn and cars and motorcycles. again, it is one of the most heavily visibly policed airports in this country as well as the plain clothes units that are on site at that location. but the situation at the airport now, it is in lockdown

the -- the surrounding -- some of the streets or the street here los angeles, century boulevard which is one of the main streets to access the airport, that is being closed down as well. >> jennifer i'm going to interrupt you for a second. because we have a contributor on the phone right now. dr. todd curtis. are you there? >> yes, i am. >> can you tell us what is happening right now? what type of security measures are in place, especially when you are talking about an airport the size of lax and thousands of customers, and that may be an understatement. >> lax is a unique airport. it's not only a major airport, it's a very high profile airport which has had events in the past like this. so this is probably something the los angeles police and airport police have dealt with. and one key thing to think about right now is when it comes to securing the airport, there are multiple levels of security at the airport. tsa, which was the focus of the shooting actually is not a law enforcement organization, and they don't have weapons training or defensive weaponry to protect themselves. >> wh

there are several airports around the los angeles area. so far lax is the only one that has a ground stop in effect. and more locally according to google traffic indicators, there is very, very heavy traffic, possibly stopped traffic going into the airport, but this is a very good sign, the roads leading out of the airport seem to flowing relatively well. >> when you say a ground stop these are planes simple circling the airport or will they will redirected. >> well, specifically a ground stop would be airports that have not yet taken off from their origin airport. so anyone who is flying today -- not just in los angeles or flying too and from los angeles, but if you are flying on an airline that is supposed to go in and out of los angeles, your flight might be effected. so if you are not already at the airport, check with your airline to see if your flight has somehow been affected. and the air lines may be relatively free when it comes to their change. they may allow you to have a change without having a change fee attached to it. >> and

kharaghani: the los angeles river is approximately 51 miles. concrete reduces the size of the river that you need to carry the water because it speeds up the flow of water. if you'd like to remove all the concrete and to have natural system to carry the water to protect you from flooding, you need to have almost one mile on each side of the river set aside for transport of rain. so in order for the city to have use of those lands around the river, concrete made it possible to have minimum land so the water can be carried to the ocean in the fastest possible way. but, unfortunately, because of population growth and poor housekeeping, people are putting a lot of pollutants on the street and the streets are the openings to our stormwater sewer system. in an average year, 4,000 to 5,000 tons of trash ends up in long beach. man: we've created a system to deal with flooding but inadvertently created a pathway for pollution to get into our waterways. narrator: los angeles county is beginning to develop ways to reduce the infrastructure's impact upon t

we're following the breaking news, very disturbing information coming out of l.a.x., the los angeles international airport. shots were heard, shots were fired. we're told about a half an hour or so ago, 9:30 a.m. pacific time. that would be 12:30 p.m. here on the east coast. about a half an hour or so ago, this incident apparently started with the shots fired. there are injuries. we've seen people evacuated. and we've sign people who have been injured. we have no idea what caused the shots to be fired. we do know that as a precaution, as they always do at these kinds of incidents, authorities are taking precautions and evacuating the terminal. we believe it's terminal 3 at l.a.x. if you're familiar with l.a.x., this is a huge terminal. this is a huge airport. on a friday morning when traffic is just building up for something like this to happen obviously very, very disturbing. l.a., l.a.x. police confirming and i'm quoting now there is an incident at l.a.x. and evacuations are under way. shots have been fired. and people have been injured. apparently multiple injuries in this inciden
