smith in arkansas saw an inch of ice. we have a category five ice storm potential that means they could lose power for weeks. take a look at the satellite and show you the radar where exactly the system is right now. you can actually tell overnight plenty of damage already these little balls you're looking at, those are reports of freezing rain we have already seen and they stretch from indiana back in through texas. so with that, we know farther to the north we have seen smaller amounts of that ice accumulation. about a quarter of an inch or so and half an inch, the threshold we get concerned with these power lines coming down and that is the mention earlier. we have already seen north of us looks like northwestern portions of arkansas getting the large amounts so far. here in memphis talking about the next few hours really starting to switch over from rain to freezing rain. with that we could see about a half an inch of freezing rain in this region. with that we talk about the potential for power lines to come down in t

smith, arkansas. they're expected to be one of the states hit hardest. we know snow is certainly bad. i'll tell you, and you know this, you're the meteorologist, when you get this kind of -- these ice estimates, it's dangerous to drive, power outages, it can be pretty bad there. >> reporter: and it can be pretty bad because it looks like rain. you don't realize it's freezing rain until you see what it does to everything it touches. look at some of the bushes. i mean, even something as small as these little bushes are covered with the freezing rain. but if you extend that to a larger scale, the bigger trees, the power lines, that's where we're going to see our big issues. and because this is a storm that affects areas from texas, eventually all the way up into illinois, indiana, and ohio, we have a dozen states that could end up with this icing situation affecting about 30 million people. and if the power goes out in the bigger cities, it could be one of those situations where it takes a long time to get the power restored because this ice is heavy. now,

the big story is the ice storm and the people that are in arkansas and tennessee, they're losing power at this hour because of the tree limbs falling down. the storm yesterday rolled into oklahoma towards the tail end of the rush hour and it caused its trouble there. we had a lot of snow, we had a little sleet and then snowed on top of it. nothing worse than getting a little ice and snow on top. look at the map here, these are our warnings and watches and advisories. we have the big ice storm and snow from oklahoma city to dallas all the way up into areas of western new york. we had dangerous windchills all through the northern plains and a new winter storm that's going to move into california today which that one by the way could even bring snow to areas like philadelphia, d.c., new york, and washington, d.c. on sunday. not a significant event, but still, that's the next one in the wings. as far as the worst right now, overnight the icing has been really bad in arkansas and it tennessee where the trees are coming down this hour, roads closed, schools closed. snow in southern portions
