he kidnapped a woman and drove her to indiana where she was able to finally escape. how did he escape? >> reporter: well, dell, that's what the investigators are trying to figure out, but what they do know, once michael elliot made his way outside of that prison, he somehow maneuvered the fencing and he went through a hole. and he was in a white kitchen uniform and investigators believe that's why he was able to blend in with the snow. as you mentioned, as he was able to break free, illiot kidnapped and abducted a woman from the area by using a box cutter from there, they drove several miles away to a gas station near the indiana-michigan border and the woman was left unharmed and able to get away from elliot, but by the time the police arrived at the scene, elliot was gone. this is a man considered armed and dangerous, and he was convicted in the 1990s of killing many people. his escape has prompted many problems. he was last seen driving a jeep 2014 liberty. do people have any idea where he might be? >> reporter: right now, the investigators believe that he is not

i wish it were indiana. he had to fly over indiana probably to get there, but he's going there for the purpose, as stated, to discuss a new initiative. i think it's a transportation initiative that he hopes will create jobs and stimulate economic growth. clearly, that's been an ongoing challenge for this administration, but how ironic. how ironic to go to minnesota, a state like my home state of indiana that's been one of the most -- had one of the most negatively impacted taxes imposed upon one of its most dynamic job creators, the medical device industry. how ironic that you go to talk about creating jobs and economic growth, at the same time a proposal, a provision that was incorporated in the so-called affordable care act imposed a -- an egregious excise tax on not the profits but on the sales receipts of medical device companies simply as a pay-for for the obamacare act. as i said, indiana and minnesota, are home to many of the country's largest medical device manufacturers. in fact, my state of indiana

in indiana we passed the largest state tax cut in indiana history. we're considering corporate tax reductions in the corporate session of the general assembly. we've been rolling back red tape. the other piece is education. in indiana we're making an effort to make career and vocational education a priority in every high school in our state again. i mean, the jobs that the state of indiana was involved in bringing to our state last year have an average wage of about $21 an hour. >> that's great. >> but the challenges is oftentimes finding people to fill those good paying jobs. i think lifting the burden on businesses and taxes and regulations and creating more effective and career vocational expectations is a better pathway. >> lower unemployment. a lot of jobs. good schools. you should run for president. have you thought about that? >> thanks. i'm flattered at the suggestion and i'm awfully proud of the hoosier state. i'll be honest with you, steve, i haven't spent one second over the last 13 seconds thinking about anything other than the future of

an inmate we met at the indiana state prison. one of a handful of inmates allowed to use a personal camera supplied by our crew used to record intimate thoughts in the privacy of his cell. he even shared some thoughts about the crew, themselves. >> you got susan, you got alex in wonderland, and all those other guys, you know, i don't know their names, but they're cool. and they're all from california. can you believe that? >> when we first started working with darren bailey, we heard he had this very violent past. that he was not only violent on the streets, but once he got into prison, had a very erratic and impulsive and violent nature. so when we encountered him, he was already in a process of going through therapy and trying to make himself a better inmate. >> i have never given myself a chance. and because i'm giving myself a chance to do better for myself, i have a supporting cast that are saying, yeah, we believe in you. yeah, he's showing progress. yeah, he's no longer the person that has held him hostage for years. >> bu

. >> the correctional facility is isolated among miles of corn and soybean field in southwestern indiana. >> come on. let's go. >> some of the state's violent inmates are housed here. and they have been known to hurt each other. james stone has been in prison for the past 25 years for attempted murder. he has the had more than a few scrapes in that time. while some inmates half been known to create knives out of toothbrushes or nearly anything else. several years ago, when stone was at another prison. he devised a more unique weapon. >> the cheese graters was leather work gloves that i had that i took pads off, welding gloves, inside the welding gloves. i took the pads off of them. put varnish, dipped them in varnish. puts the pads on top. let it dry for a minute. got good and tacky. dripped back down in the varnish. went over off to the drill press. and still shop where the curly qs are. metal curly qs. dipped down in a bunch of them. a metal bush on top of my gloves. then let them dry for a minute. then i ran them through the top layer of the varnish in the can. keep them from breaking

reid, the point in indiana overlaps what's happening in virginia, and here's why. the folks in indiana think that if they keep this issue off the ballot for a couple more years, it is less likely that people will reject this attempt to get marriage equality. in virginia and other places, we're seeing judges come around and also reject these kind of bans. is that march a matter of time at this point? >> well, it is, especially through the federal courts. this is a concerted strategy by supporters of same-sex marriage, who really went through legislatures as much as they could in states like washington state and california and oregon. rather oregon is going to be coming up on the ballot in 2014. once they hit all the democratic states that they could, the only available avenue they had to legalize same-sex marriage was through the courts, so there's something like 37 cases in about 15 states that are taking a look at these same-sex marriage bans. new ones every day in states like missouri and kansas and mississippi, alabama, all over the sort of red america, if you w
