the kennedy white house. i happened to meet her at a cocktail party in washington. i said, barbara, i have just read your oral history and there are 17 blacked out pages. she agreed to let me in. them, this is what she revealed. kennedy had this affair with this 20-year-old. , all i had was 38 words, two lines in my biography in 2003 about this issue. making a bignt on deal out of this. it interested me because i had interviewed a number of journalists for that biography and i asked them, did you know about kennedy's womanizing? they said, yes. why didn't you write about it? you didn't do it in the 1960's. you didn't intrude on a president's private life in that way. it was hidden from the public. when i brought this forward, the press got all into this. held meyork daily news up and said, who is this woman? i didn't know who she was. barbara didn't wanted to tell me. i trusted what barbara was telling me and i didn't want to know. i said, this one must be in her 60's. leave her alone. they found out who she

congress passed the kennedy tax program. president lyndon johnson signed it into law on march 15, 1964, a monument to a martyred president. the economy took off in a burst of prosperity. within 18 months, gnp was growing at a feverish 5%. unemployment dropped to its lowest rate in 7 years. it seemed that, in president kennedy's phrase, "a rising tide really had lifted all boats." on december 31, 1965, the cover of time magazine featured john maynard keynes, 19 years dead, but once again a household word. for economists accustomed to obscurity, it was a welcome change to bask in the limelight. just about everyone agreed that the tax cut was an unqualified success. by 1965, it appeared we had finally learned how to use fiscal policy to control the economy. we asked richard gill why the 1964 tax cut had seemed like such a rousing success. it did seem to get the country moving again. it seemed a proof of the keynesian theory, dominant among economists by the 1960s. in terms of our diagram, the tax cut gave consumers more disposa

kennedy was our first keynesian president. it isn't that others hadn't done some keynesian things, but kennedy did it in an avowed and perceptive way. he was very cautious at first. he finally saw a more liberal approach was needed to stimulate the economy. it took the form of a massive tax cut proposed in i962. this net reduction in tax liabilities of $10 billion will increase the purchasing power of american families and business enterprises in every tax bracket. but john f. kennedy didn't live to see his programs enacted. instead, on that fateful november day, lyndon baines johnson was sworn in as the 36th president of the united states. johnson pursued kennedy's economic proposals and pushed the tax plan through congress. how well did it work? perfectly. business week, which isn't exactly a liberal pro-kennedy publication, said it probably was the most successful tax cut in history. it came out of the textbooks. it went back into the textbooks as the fiscal measure that came closer to carrying out what people had projected

jackie kennedy makes the list. michelle obama as a current asset. nancy reagan shows up on that list in a very positive sense i think as a political asset and the work that nancy reagan did as part of the reagan administration. in some cases really taking care of the president, negotiating with various constituencies and even with warring parties and the administration itself was seen as quite crucial during the reagan years. greatest lasting legacy, jackie kennedy i think deserves mention there. we just saw the 50th anniversary of the assassination of president kennedy and once again the nation was i think reintroduced to the role that jackie kennedy played, not only in her role of revitalizing the white house as an institution, introducing the country to the white house, but the grace that she conducted herself really was a model for the country at the time of the assassination. and that's truly a legacy that has stood out not only for the country but for the institution of the first lady and the importance of that position to the entire country.

kennedy is ready to accept a plea deal. telling abc news, she's sticking to her not guilty plea to driving under the influence of the generic version of sleep aid ambien. the 54-year-old human rights act vits was arrested in july 2012 after police say she sideswiped a tractor trailer with her lexus on a new york highway, then kept driving. chef was later found slumped over the wheel of her suv. >> and then ill have no memory until i was stopped at a traffic light and a police officer was at my car door. >> reporter: kennedy told police she may have mistakenly taken an ambien that morning instead of her thyroid medication. the powerful sleep drug carries a warning against taking it, then driving. but new york prosecutors are going after her, saying that even if she accidentally drugged herself, she broke the law if she kept driving after feeling the pill's effects. >> ambien is known for knocking you out. she is responsible for taking the medication that's in her house and making sure that she's taking the right medication.
