matt bevin made mistakes early on. he appeared at a cockfighting rally and appeared to endorse cockfighting. made some very tactical mistakes and turned out not to be the great candidate that a lot of people thought he would be. in a major poll released over the weekend 39% of matt bevin's voters said they would not vote for mitch mcconnell in november. 25% said they would vote for alison grimes. and i think the critical factor is mitch mcconnell spent $12 million of his money, has not budged his poll numbers at all. he's still in the low 40s against alison grimes and hasn't been able to do anything to enhance his standings. so it's going to be a very, very competitive race with 56% job disapproval that he has. i think he will have a very tough sledding in the fall. >> just so folks know that was matt bevin there offering his concession. he was the tea party challenger who has come up short this evening in his challenge of senate minority leader mitch mcconnell in the state of kentucky. do you buy that polling that say

in kentucky, mitch mcconnell has beaten tea party challenger matt bevin. allison lundegren-grimes is the winner on the democratic side. here's why those two states are so important right now. there are 12 states with competitive senate races right there. the republicans will need to win a net of three of the remaining nine states. kentucky and georgia in red are the only state where is democrats could pick up a republican-held seat. we expect other big news this evening from pennsylvania, where democrats see a major chance to knock off a very unpopular republican governor. will the nominee be tom wolf, the self-financing businessman? or allison schwartz who's running with the backing of the democratic organization in philadelphia. all happening today. all being counted tonight, all going to be reported here on msnbc the second there are results. are they expecting a resounding victory or too close for comfort? >> at this point, they're pretty confident that bevin is going to stay down in the 30s, which is where they want him, considering he spent $3 millio

mitch mcconnell pushing back against matt bevin. how mitch mcconnell is the head of the republican can you cause in the senate, and he sees the potential to become the top senator in washington if republicans can take control of the senate by winning just six seats. he has made it his personal mission to push back against tea party challengers who mitch mcconnell fears may not make the best general election candidates. now senator mcconnell is going for his sixth term and he's being challenged by matt bevin, who is a tea party-backed businessman. it turns out as we get close for tomorrow's election it looks like the polls are showing that bevin's fight against washington, his fight against the establishment has not been enough to go up against mitch mcconnell's seniority. he's telling voters i'm bringing home what you need, and i am a conservative guy. allison grimes, kentucky's secretary of state, the real question will be if mitch mcconnell wins tomorrow can he get those tea party-supporters to back him over a democrat. >> is the

hello matt--as a money manager what steps do you take during the spring months? > >one thing i do is a mid- course correction and see how the year has gone. this year we've seen the high flyers come down. we've seen interest rates be a lot steadier than people thought. so you take a look at some of the stocks that are working and some of the stocks that are not and try to make a move here and there. i've been buying oil, european companies and also stocks that are in transportation and industrial seem to be more popular. some of the high flyers really came down so i've been choosier about that sector of the economy. > >what about volatility in the market... is it typically high or typically low this season? > >volatility tends to rise and have these sudden spikes in the late spring and sometimes in the summer. i know a lot of people think it's in the fall but i've seen the biggest volatility spikes in what people think are gonna be the quiet months of the year. > >matt will this be a year to sell in may and walk away? > >i think a lot of people started selling in

. >> matt, i wanted to turn to you before the break and note that this does not happen in a vacuum. it happens in context. there are more than 310 million americans looking on at the president and congress doing or don't do something. what is happening in public opinion. >> all the latest poll something demonstrating there is widespread support among different racial and ethnic groups, partisan groups. we're finding all the time in our polling that increasing numbers of americans support it. they want to see something done. and a very, very small percentage of americans. the most common answer given there should be some path to legal status. i think its accurate to say that that the policy is really ignoring the fast majority of public opinion on this. not only after the 2012 elections but since then. when the senate started to act on the bipartisan immigration bill in the senate we started to see more con gelling of public opinion. coming together and saying yes, this is the type of bill we can support. now we're in this hole, so to speak, where nothing is getting done. which heard

matt keller is on the scene. what is going on, matt? >> it could be a big problem in san jose. the connection to southbound 101 from northbound 8 80's is closed and it will be closed all day. i walked to the end of the ramp and the crew would not told me what was going on but there was obvious signs of water into the lanes of southbound 101. they had a big hose in a hell on the side of the road. they are obviously working on something there. they said it was potholes but this is a bigger problem, a bigger mess and an infrastructure problem. they will be out here all day long waiting to clean up the mess before they get started on the infrastructure issue. now, this is a non-commute direction so that means the morning hours are okay with backup at the southbound connection but the afternoon could be a real problem because a lot people will head home this way. now, this is, again, supposed to be open at 5:00 this afternoon. we will keep you updated on abc7 news. >>> matt, thank you. >>> sounds like a long and frustrating day. >> maybe not so much a problem if you are headed to wo

matt shapiro,president of mws capital, joins us for chart talk this morning. good morning matt. >>good morning angie. >>you tend to invest heavily in the stock market. you have a portfolio full of some popular names, maybe some not so popular names. and you've been doing well. what do you think about market conditions? >>it seems kind of slow doesn't it? like there's not a lot biting. but there's a lot going on underneath with heavy deal making activity and earnings that actually are ending up in this quarter to be better than what people thought. with the shakeout of the nasdaq and some of the smaller cap companies there are a lot of stocks at 6 and 1 year lows that have earnings catalysts and some of them have really been jumping on unexpectedly good earnings. >>one of the stocks that you're watching is discovery communications. this stock has not performed well. earnings are coming out today. what are you anticipating? >>yes, it's really been a dog and one of its networks is animal planet. it has missed the last few quarters. it's a stock i own. it's a pure play cable content
