joining me now is david gregory, the moderator, to discuss it all. hi, david. >> hi, rosemary, good morning. >> john boehner threatened to sue this week. what's the deal. does such a lawsuit stand a chance? >> well, you're going hear reaction on the program this morning from kathy rem ler who has just departed the white house as the counsel, the president's lawyer, who will have some things to say, i'm sure she will, about this. there is legal question about it. if it got through the court system, it could take several years to resolve. the courts are generally reluctant to get in between two branches of government to fight over politics. that's how this should be seen as a political move to gin up the base around this decision of the political power, the president overstepping hit bounds. there are a lo ott of republicans very upset about this. that's the manifestations of it from the lawsuit. >> david, you're going to be featuring an exclusive interview with former president bill clinton. part of it is regarding hillary clinton and recent comments

joining me to discuss these developments is david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." good morning. >> good morning rosemary. >> president obama says he's not putting american boots on the ground. are iraq kis likely to fight off militants? >> the president said they should be. after the huge investment of lives and training from united states principlely the iraqi government was supposed to be able to defend itself. one of the reasons they're not is because of the division in the country fostered by the leadership. ultimately the president's belief is this is a problem that iraq has to solve on its own. the big concern is whether or not we have to prevent a terrorist state from emerging in iraq. that's a concern the administration has as you see this descent and the rise of isis in the country. that is the acid test of what the u.s. does. >> this morning you'll discuss the republican parties. your guest is mitt romney. he is of course is weighing in on eric cantor's stunning loss in the primaries this week. what does that loss mean for the future of the gop? >> well i

involvement in the crisis in iraq, we're joined by david gregory host of "meet the press." david, the president announced this week the u.s. will send 300 military advisers to iraq. that seems like a big strategy shift for someone who once called the war in iraq dumb. how much push back do you expect from democrats who might fear mission creep? >> there are democrats and republicans who don't want the mission to creep forward at all. they don't want any intervention because they don't want to get involved in a civil war. neither does president obama. but i think he's trying to separate the two issues, isolating the fact that he has a terrorist threat in the form of isis that could directly affect the united states and western interests throughout europe and even the middle east. so he wants to try to deal with that threat. at the same time, really push malaki out. i think this administration would like to see a new government in iraq that would be more inclusive, getting to that point may be difficult, may take time. as i say, the president doesn't want the safe haven that

david gregory, moderator of "meet the press" joins me now. that was some interview. i want to throw to the first part of it which was clinton talking about iraq. >> okay. >> the former vice president dick cheney said of president obama in an op ed that claims that al qaeda is decimated, is clearly not true. that al qaeda is on the march. the argument that america is less safe under president obama. do you believe dick cheney is a credible critic on these matters? >> well, i believe, you know, if they hadn't gone to war in iraq, none of this would be happening. mr. cheney has been incredibly adroit for the last six years or so attacking the administration for not doing an adequate job of cleaning up the mess that he made. and i think it's unseemly, and i give president bush, by the way, a lot of credit for trying to stay out of this debate and letting other people work through it. >> fascinating stuff. just to pull the layers back. he doesn't mention the fact his wife did vote for the war. she wouldn't have proceeded the way the bush team did but she did vote for the

. >> we're joined by david gregory, moderator of "meet the press." he's in our washington newsroom. david, how does the president sell any action at all to the component of the american people who feel to coin a phrase, it's not our dance after the blood and treasure spilled there even though to coin another, we broke it? >> right, that pottery barn rule you broke that you own it, you got to somehow fix it. this is a terrorism problem, brian. that's what the president made clear today. this is not about the civil war in iraq or a neighboring syria. those are certainly involved in a really the foundation of this. the reality is you've got terrorists who are much greater in numbers going to the number of foreign fighters perhaps even at 10,000 between syria and iraq. this could be a real threat to the united states. the american public may not want to get involved again but the president has to outline the fact it's a core belief of his that he cannot allow a failed state to emerge while saying politics is at the root of it. he's not going to help unless the iraqis demonstrate they wi

. >>> david gregory is moderator of "meet the press." david, good morning. >> good morning. >> i know you just spoke in an exclusive television interview with secretary hagel. kristen brought up points that have been causing concern. one of them being whether or not this does in some way constitute negotiating with terrorists. did the secretary address that? >> he did. and he denies that that's the case at all. i think the u.s.'s position on that is clear and unchanged. that there are different circumstances here. negotiating for a prisoner of war. there have been direct talks between u.s. officials and the taliban before. and, indeed, secretary hagel said it could pave the way for new direct talks in the future which may be significant for the future of afghanistan. back to this particular point, there are still concerns. you've got hardened detainees out of guantanamo. and one of the questions is, does the taliban now think this is a new modis operandi where they might be able to do this kind of thing again. are u.s. troops in danger?

how do you think he handled that particular line of questioning from david gregory? >> you know, craig. it's interesting. i thought he was more effective during the 2012 democratic convention for barack obama than in the sit-down interview. of course, it's two completely different formats there. as we saw in the 2008 presidential election, sometimes bill clinton was an asset for his wife. and sometimes he wasn't. i think it's a little bit when you try to defend your wife versus somebody in your own party it's a little bit more difficult and complicated. i wouldn't be surprised if she's runni inning barack obama becom bigger ally and asset in big audiences to be explainer in chief for her than her husband. because it's a little too personal when you're a husband defending your wife. >> although it will be, of course, for the first time in modern political history that you have not one but two -- one former president and the next president all potentially stumping for that president's wife. it's amazing. potential story, i guess. >> it will be fantastic. the question i

david gregory joins me now with more. david, that was a little bit of a cringe-worthy moment. there's bill clinton on stage, his wife, his daughter sitting there. he's talking about her. and by the way, he seemed to almost indicate that she wasn't being very adept, in his words. >> well, what he was saying is as a political matter, yeah, she had to go and clean up the comment that she made initially that they were dead broke coming out of the white house. what has struck me about this at the time i did the interview and as i've thought about it this week is that the clintons seem somewhat unprepared for this line of questioning about kind of who they are, how wealthy they are today. it is a different thing in their public life than where they started, but it is their reality today. the other reality today is that in politics, if you are an establishment entrenched politician, if you're a democrat or you're a republican, there's a lot of people who are angry at you who don't think that you're listening to them. and that's a bipartisan problem that the parties have. and so, for

david gregory is moderator of "meet the press" and joins us this morning from washington. good morning, david. >> good morning, erica. >> richard just set up what could be a very odd alliance potentially, and this has a lot of americans scratching their heads as well, the thought that the u.s. and iran could be working together on something here. how would that play out? >> well, i think it's a potential that the united states government could say to iran, look, we both have a common enemy here in al qaeda. destabilizing iraq, both want iraq to stay hole. malaki is your guy, iran. what are you going to do to help and work in common cause here? mean, the problem is that's a very tough potential ally to work with given what they are doing in syria to ferment some of the violence there as well, so you've got a difficult potential alliance but iran may have kind of the biggest stake here and may be the most powerful figure in iraq right now. >> this is a tough time for the president, we have to point out, especially when it comes to foreign policy. a great deal of criticism ov

david gregory? >> to scrutinize what happened is fair to look at all the circumstances around this. the question i have, the question for this debate and moving forward, it's whether the circumstances matter, or whether the united states or any commander in chief will always be committed to rescuing a soldier from the battlefield, no matter the circumstances. so the chairman of the joint chiefs, martin dempsey said, look, this was an american citizen who is a soldier who is presumed innocent in this circumstance. who is prisoner. the war is coming to an end, that's what he said. the war is coming to an end. there's an opportunity to get the soldier off the battlefield. that's the bottom line for what the president made. >> david, let's try and do something here that maybe is hard to do. and the question you're asking, donny, i'll put it out to the table but ask david to handle it, you don't have to answer it. is given what you know, do you make this deal? and given what we know, which is not everything -- i don't think anyone can really understand the deal. >> which tells you there'
