"out front" tonight the fight to save iraq. american military advisers just arrived in iraq. there are 10,000 militant fighters in the country and across the border in syria. that may not sound like a lot but they're doing a lot of damage. isis continuing a deadly march through iraq taking over towns and cities. these are new pictures posted on a twitter account associated with isis. they allegedly are taken in the northern province of nineveh. we haven't been able to confirm the authenticity. these are the pictures they're posting, with launching rocket, men lined up before they were shot and executed. as you can see from behind and much closer to baghdad, the video that we're going to show you here posted on youtube. again, we haven't been able to independently confirm this either, but this is what it supposedly shows, iraqi security forces allegedly fighting isis rebels in fallujah. displaying rebels kill katie on the hood of a humvee. atrocities mount on both sides. this comes from the united states top diplomat right now.

i'm don lemon in for erin burnett. more u.s. troops now in iraq while new terror concerns are forcing u.s. officials to consider beefing up airport security measures. we start with the troops first though and additional 300 u.s. military personnel are now in iraq. that's in addition to those the president announced he would send earlier this month. barbara, what do you know? >> these additional 300 troops, the pentagon says are purely for security. they will work out protecting the embassy be u.s. installations and perhaps most importantly protecting baghdad international airport. why is that? because there are growing concerns that isis fighters are building northwest of baghdad. the u.s. cannot afford to let baghdad airport even, by any measure, remotely fall to the insurgence. they simply cannot afford to have that happen. so 300 troops going in. security helicopters drones many of them will be based at the airport. others at embassy. this is, as you say, don, in addition to the 300 advisors that the president was sending in

i'm erin burnett. out front tonight the u.s. preparing options on iraq. military planners have assembled a draft list of terror targets in the country. officials say this list is constantly being revised, they haven't yet made final determinations. in iraq militants celebrating after attacking the country's biggest oil refinery. now both isis, the islamic terror group, and the iraqi government are saying they are in control of this crucial location. at the white house tonight the president just met with senior congressional leaders to talk about the violence on the ground and whether the united states will do anything about it. short of boots on the ground, an amorphous term to begin with, the administration says all options are on the table. joe johns has more on what happened at the meeting tonight. >> reporter: president obama in the oval office with senior congressional leadership briefing them about u.s. options in iraq. the big question -- possible military action already on the drawing board at the pentagon, cnn has learned. after the meeting senat

"outfront" tonight more americans in iraq. another wave of american military personnel landed today. the actual number of u.s. personnel in iraq right now is higher than previously thought. we're going to have a full report from the pentagon in just a full moment. and on the ground in iraq today the deadly battle for control of the country is raging. a bomb blast killing 19 and wounds 41 more. a new attack in a market south of baghdad in which 13 people were killed yesterday. then a car bomb explosion in northern kirkuk which killed six and wounded 21 other. barbara starr is at the pentagon with details on what the united states is doing right now. >> reporter: in baghdad, nearly 500 u.s. troops are now on the ground including 180 military advisers of the 300 president obama authorized plus security teams and intelligence analysts already there. priority one, determine whether the capital is in danger of falling to the isis militants. the current assessment? the iraqi military will keep control and isis won't risk all-out war.

i'm erin burnett on "outfront" tonight. we begin with the breaking news. sergeant bowe bergdahl going to be back on american soil in just a few hours, en route at this instant. he is currently in the air being flown to brooke army medical center in san antonio, texas. that's where he'll continue treatment following nearly five years in captivity with the taliban. tonight we're also learning new information about bergdahl's time as a prisoner and why he may have left his platoon in the first place. the daily beast has obtained letters that are believed to be from bergdahl sent to his parents while he was being held. in a moment, we're going to talk to the daily beast kimberly dozier. she is the one who got these letters from sources in contact with the taliban. she is going to tell us exactly what they say. first, though, we begin our coverage with barbara starr "outfront" at the pentagon. barbara, what have you learned about when bergdahl is expected to return to the u.s., the treatment that is going to await him, which i suppose could begin literally in a

"outfront" tonight, a major bombshell in the bowe bergdahl case. we're learning tonight about the army's investigation into how sergeant bowe bergdahl ended up in the hands of the taliban. and here is what we can tell you. a military official tells our barbara starr an army investigation that was conducted immediately after bergdahl's disappearance came to the conclusion that bergdahl left his outpost deliberately and of his own free will. that of course has been part of the firestorm over his capture and the terms of his release. but it had not been confirmed. there were debates, member of the platoon, one of the members of the show who said that barbara starr is at the pentagon. this is incredible this just happened in terms of the release this week. >> well, erin, here is what we have. when bergdahl first disappeared, the army did exactly what you expect. they conducted a fact finding investigation into what happened. a military official told me a short time ago that initial investigation back in the 2009 time frame did conclude he left the base
