harry fawcett joins us from seoul. what other details can you give us? >> it's after a 24 hour standoff that this came to an end, and did so in a dramatic face fashion. the man was surrounded by police. there was an exchange of fire by a checkpoint, yesterday, sunday, afternoon. and it's - it is said by the defense ministry that he turned his rifle, the rifle which he's understood to have begun the shooting on saturday night when five soldiers were killed, seven injured, on himself, injured himself in the torso, and it was at that point that the soldiers moved in, and they started the process to take him to hospital. he arrived at hospital, the same hospital with some people that he injured, where they are receiving treatment. the defence military is saying they began talks with him this morning at 20 past eight, and this man, sergeant lim, a conscript, a 22 year-old. he asked to speak to his father and he spoke to his father on the phone and to his father and his elder brother there on the scene, apparently, when the suicide attempt took place. >> are t

harry fawcett reports from seoul. >> a name has emerged. it is understood a sergeant lim carried out this shooting, in the far northeastern corner of south korea. it's been reported he was on a day shift and when his patrol ended just before 8:00 p.m, that's when this shooting took place. authorities said it happened at actually 8:15 p.m. the place he was serving in is known to be one of the most difficult, one of the most intense areas of these operations in the whole of south korea. right up on the border, also a coastal area, there are rugged mountains around. it's known to be a place that not only requires a lot sent there as this man was on his mandatory two-year military service but also, the living conditions are pretty difficult as well. so there have been some, much lower-level than this incidents in the past. and there is precedent for this happening, in 2005, another soldier, another private, someone serving his mandatory two year service, he killed eight of his fellow soldiers as they slept, that happened as well at the end of a

harry fawcett joins me live from seoul. another shooting. what happened? >> what we have been told by the defence ministerry is that there has been a shoot-out which started at 2:23 local time, which is over an hour and a half ago, and that this happened near a check point near a school, which is in the city, a town of munkarey up in the north-east, close to the civilian line of control, sort of a line south of the demilitarized zone. there has been checkpoints stationed in many of these areas in case this man, sergeant lim, who is a conscript. someone doing his mandatory two years national service, in case he tried to get to populated areas away from the mountainous region in which he was serving at the outpost. what we understand is that it happened at 2:23. a platoon leader was shot in the arm. there was other reports from local media citing residence saying more than 10 shots were fired on each side trying to persuade the man to surrender. there were reports of the helicopter in the air above. it could be that the long manhunt after the shoot-out insid

seoul with a high of 31. some partly cloudy skies there expected for your tuesday. let's move over towards the americas now. i do want to start off with this feature on the satellite imagery. fairly obvious. this is a tropical storm. tropical storm douglas. i'm not going to show you the track because this one expected to weaken. it's heading out to sea. that's the good news with that. definitely going to becoming a tropical depression as we look ahead to the next 48 hours. looking at storms toward the north centered there into parts of saskatchewan. manitoba, you saw wet and windy conditions this past weekend. it's this low. that's moving off toward the east. attached to it is this cold front. it's broken off and become a separate low. that's going to bring in the threat of severe thunderstorms to the eastern portions of the plains and midwest as we look ahead through monday. sunday night has already been rough for many of you. that threat is still there for large hail, damaging winds, and more tornadoes. now, on the flip side of things, that low is pushing through.
