rachel joins us from cleveland. great to see you. >> thank you. >> super excited to see your interview with lebron. before that, we understand you have breaking news tonight on the nfl's ray rice scandal, what is it? >> yes, you may remember a few weeks ago associated press cam out with a report saying that a law enforcement official, in atlantic city, had actually sent the elevator video of ray rice to the nfl in april. so, before they made their decision about his suspension and, certainly before, roger goodell had said unequivocally no one had the tape and hadn't seen it. he presented evidence of a voice mail some one in the nfl offices with the number there, written there, saying, yes, we got it. i saw it. it's terrible. we didn't know the name of who've the law enforcement official sent it to. however. today associated press report aid name. that name, nfl head of security, jeffrey miller. so, someone in his office, was the one who responded and said, yes, we got it, you're right. it's terrible. and in fact, th

cnn's rachel nichols, host of "unguarded with rachel nichols." also joining us, senior legal analyst, jeffrey toobin and cnn anchor don lemon. explain what's happening here. how is all of this playing out over at the nfl? >> there's certainly some concern. adrian peterson was deactivated for this past weekend's games. then on monday, the vikings came out and said they were reinstating him and going to, quote, let his due process and this case play out. it will probably play out through the course of the entire season. he's not expected to go to any sort of trial on this until later in the year, possibly next year. that drew a pretty strong reaction, especially after that second report. well, yes, child services did not, in the end, have a finding of child abuse against peterson. peterson's lawyer is correct. the mother was concerned enough, and there was an injury to the child that she did call child services and they did think it was warranted to launch the investigation. the fact that that even happened is yet another concern. and it's not just

the rachel maddow show starts now. >> at 8:30 p.m., the u.s. military says they started bombing inside syria. it is awkward to say that the u.s. is bombing inside syria instead of just saying they are bombing syria. but that awkward phrasing is because this bombing campaign tonight is not against the syrian government. or the syrian military. it's against a group that in fact is fighting the syrian government. a group that controls huge swaths of both syria and iraq. u.s. bomber and fighter jets and drones have been bombing inside iraq since august 8th. the iraqi government welcomed and in fact begged for those air strikes to help iraqi security forces fight against isis in that country. but over the border in syria it's a different story. the government in syria does not welcome and is certainly not asking for u.s. air strikes inside their country. syria has said it would see any air strikes by anyone on its territory as an act of aggression. but those air strikes have in fact, started tonight. the u.s. military announcing these aircraft, f-22
