bruce gordon is with the corbett campaign in pittsburgh. governor corbett seems to have picked up a little momentum in the past few weeks. >> reporter: he seems at least reasonably optimistic outwardly i can tell you we're right outside his campaign headquarters for this evening. the omni william penn hotel and the governor arrived here about 45 minutes ago. i spoke to him briefly in the lobby. he seemed calm, cool, pretty much at peace with himself. dressed casually, shirt sleeves roamed rolled up with his wife susan a couple of family members. he said look, i've done everything i can on the campaign trail and now it's up to the voters. so he's very much at peace with himself. i have to tell you, though, corbett will need every vote he can get the. pre election poll suggests he's got a lot of ground to make up. governor corbett cast his ballot this morning and showed predictable optimism as he described a late campaign blitz designed to close the gap on his democratic challenger. every pre election poll shows tom wolf with a sizeable lead.

fox 29's bruce gordon live in cherry hill tonight. bruce that shift would shake up a lot of families. >> reporter: it sure would iain. the schedule has been the same since heck i was in school. high school kids going around 7:30 start time. middle school getting underway about 8:00 a.m. and elementary schools students hearing the first bell about 9:00 a.m. here in new jersey, that could all change and with good reason. 3:30 in the afternoon the kids at cherry hill's clara barton elementary school are heading for home. their day begin at 9am but if some lawmakers have their way young students like these might some day start as early as 7:30 in the morning. it's an idea that has parents and grandparents talking. >> if not always agreeing. >> i kids are early birds. they're in bed at 8:00 o'clock every night and up at 6:30 every morning. >> they would be able to ain't the earlier start time. >>> they could. >> the younger kids need to start later. they like to sleep till at least 8:00 o'clock. >> legislation specifically calls for a stud

fox 29's bruce gordon is live at the va medical center in university city. so, bruce, first of all, it's good to have you with us on the night side of things. you were with vets tonight. so what was the mood? >> reporter: in a word, lucy, frustration. too many veterans believed the process by which they get help from the va is too lengthy and too confusing. now comes word from washington that a broken system is about to get fixed. this regional open house was sparsely attended but that did not diminish the raw emotion on display from veterans who believe their country has done them wrong. >> i don't like what the va hospital -- >> army veteran frank thorn asked we not show his face during a times testy question and answer session with top administrators. thorn says he's been fighting for benefits for nearly a deca decade. >> i'm still seeing a stone wall you put up and i don't see it being broken down. it's more like a -- >> reporter: bob handle as variety of veterans issues for atlantic county, new jersey. he's too frustrate. >> you guys are waiting for too

. >> reporter: well, last night our bruce gordon talk to these veterans who said a system overhaul is much needed and long overdue last night there was an opening house of the regional will va office at wissohickon avenue that invited veterans and families to stop in and present their concerns in terms of medical care within the veterans affairs system. it was part of an effort to provide outreach and improved communication. one man didn't want to us show his face explain his ten year long battle for benefits. the feeling among veterans is frustration. >> you guys are waiting too long for services that they need. >> i got some for key services, yeah. >> reporter: gotten any better. >> little by little but there is a licensing way to go, and ones that need money most have to wait the longest. >> i think we have a way ahead to help us ensure we are centered on the veterans and how we best deliver whatever that benefit he or she may have earned. we are focused on insuring those veterans to get their answer quickest. >> reporter: catch up on the backlog. >> catch up on the backlog but equ

bruce gordon joins us live in studio. bruce, education funding has generated some of the harshest attacks and counter attacks. >> reporter: no doubt and for very good reason. franklin and marshall poll shows those who believe governor corbett has done a fair or poor job as governor put education spending at the top of their list of complaints. but is the single biggest complaint against corbett accurate? >> the allegation from the wolf campaign has been made repeatedly on tv. >> tom corbett cut a billion dollars from our schools. he took an ax to education. >> reporter: with schools in philadelphia barely able to open their doors -- protests over school funding staged seemingly every week this summer and fall the claim has resonated in a city where democrats out number republicans by nearly eight to one. >> a lot more has to be done for these schools. kids are the future. it's that simple. >> reporter: you don't feel like governor corbett has done enough? >> i don't feel that way, no. >> reporter: governor corbett fires b

. >> fox 29's bruce gordon is live at the firehouse in logan that was one of the very first to respond. bruce? >> reporter: lucy, this has been a particularly deadly year in philadelphia in terms of fires more on that just a moment. i'm on the side medic 24 engine 72. they were as you said among the fir responders to a noontime fire that killed a four-year-old little boy. his body discovered in a third floor rear bedroom of a gutted row house on the 200 block of west wyoming. a witness to the midday fire summed up the tragedy with a simple observe. >> it was nothing but pitch black smoke. all of them came out except for the four-year-old little boy. >> reporter: savvier ventura capture the chaos with his camera afternoon when this three story row home went um in flames. he says a horrified father rescued one child but could not save his own. >> he was going panic. went back to see if he could get his son. my son, my son, he went back in. he couldn't rescue the baby. >> fire officials say 15 family members lived here, nine were at home at the time. the blaze began on the second floor an
