democrat charlie crist had hoped the hispanic vote would give him the edge. but if you look at the exit polls, rick scott held his own with the hispanic vote and he won overwhelming white vote. the governor races would break their way, that just didn't happen. it was blue state after blue state and strong blue states like massachusetts and maryland, where they haven't elected a republican governor, since 1967. the republicans won tonight. they even won in illinois, president obama's home state. the only bright spots you're seeing is pennsylvania and of course california where jerry brown won big in the big state of california. >> barack obama didn't campaign in any of these states, he felt comfortable campaigning in some of these states, even michelle obama, it didn't help much. >> chris christ campaigned in 37 of these races and raised about $100 million for these republican governors. chris christie wo won big tonig. >> the republicans won big in 2010, they won big in 2012 and now they won big in 2014 in the state houses and governor's mansions. >> we'll ta

we're live at the charlie crist headquarters. is this marijuana amendment bringing people out to the polls today? >> reporter: it is really too soon to tell what kind of an impact if any that medical marijuana initiative is having on voter turnout. but we do know that early voting an absentee votes are up from the last mid determine election. more than 3.1 million votes have already been cast. more than half of the votes have come from registered republicans. and when it comes to the governor's race, a race that is so tight and so hotly contested, every vote matters, every vote counts. surveys of potential voters ahead of election day, ahead of today suggests that democrat charlie crist, republican rick scott are tied. crist and scott are virtually tied. and the polls show that voters have an unfavorable opinion of the can dates. so both of them are out there trying to connect with their voters, trying to energize their base and get the people out to the polls today. we know that the incumbent governor scott is out criss crossing

rick scott was concerned that his opponent, charlie crist, had an advantage that he didn't have. i think it was pretty minor. it was certainly something that people laughed a lot about. but to ron's earlier point, look, ultimately which is what it comes down to how florida voters feel about republicans and democrats, ironically enough, given that charlie crist was, until not so long ago, a republican himself. so i don't think that -- these little blips are stimulating. they're amusing, maybe, but they're not ultimately going to have a huge impact on the race itself. >> a distraction, ron? >> yeah, no, i'm amused, the story, of course, charlie crist was a republican at the end of the 2006 race, he would not appear with george w. bush. now he's a democrat and he won't appear with obama which goes to show that, you know, historically presidents have a hard time in midterms, especially the sixth year midterm. almost all of them through the turn of the 20th century have been bad for the president's party. really with only a couple of exceptions. this is likely to be another one of the
