dana bash is on capitol hill. dana, so much threats are being thrown around but what can republicans do about it? he has the stage for the world to see tonight. >> he has the stage and he has the executive power, which he is using tonight. so to answer your question, is there some tools that republicans believe they have, but not many because across the republican spectrum, here in the hallways, they are not going to go down the root of a government shut down again. so using the power of the purse, which is the latest weapon, has limits. mitch mcconnell said when the republicans are sworni in in january, they are limited on what they can do if they don't want to go to a government shut down. they can sue him and censure him, but the bottom line is they are limited. but as you said, there are really incendiary e-mails and statements going out. i'll give you one example. lamar smith, republican of texas released this e-mail ahead of the president's statement saying what the president is going to do is a declaration

it was interesting that dana mentioned voter turnout. and republicans are leading here in colorado where it's a mail-in ballot system. we know that 1.4 million colorado ups had already cast their vote before yesterday, in fact. that was the number we got yesterday morning. waiting on the latest number for today. interesting in colorado, the fact is that democrats tend to vote later here. that's what we're hearing from election officials on the ground. so nothing is out of the ordinary in terms of what we are seeing at this hour. however, it's interesting to note in colorado one-third of the electorate is independent. so that's the group that could really make or break either candidate tonight. >> also, colorado falls into the little trifecta with alaska and louisiana, of states tough to poll. tough to know what's going on there exactly. we'll be back with you. then there's brian todd. somehow he's found his way inside a polling facility. i don't know how he did it, i don't know if he's legal but he's there and it's good for you watching.

da dana joins us this morning. dana, that you can so much for joining us. weak growth in europe and china has been ahead of us. how much will that weigh on tiffany's earnings this quarter? >> something definitely to watch. but given that nearly 50% of tiffany's sales is in the americas and that's where the strength has been. i think that's where the possible beat could come from. certainly what we're seeing in the americas, we're seeing increased tourism, we're seeing locally spending. with the new launch of the tiffany tea collection which took place during this quarter, we should see a pretty good quarter out of tiffany this morning. >> stronger dollar is another concern. it's been trading at a four-year high. that's also going to weigh on earnings. it also has been a factor that a lot of the retail players have had to deal with this quarter. >> it certainly has. that's something also that will be a headwind in 2015, too. companies basically, whether it's price increases, changes are being made to accommodate that. but that is going to be in focus for all

dana telsi joins us now. dana, when a sector does well and some names do not do well, are they not doing well because they have a short-term problem to fix or doomed? any names that stick out for you either way? >> i think, yes. when i think of which names to do very well, i think the holiday season to see limited do very well. i think we'll see tiffany, ulta on the cosmetic side and there are thing that is will do well. basic apparel, you're struggling and apparel overall has been weaker than overall retail because where's the trend? where's the must have item? it's been hard to find unless you're athletic and active. >> of the names mentioned and done badly over the past month in particular, is there a commonality? is there a problem they have in common or really an individual store story? >> i think many of the names brian called out guided the third quarter same store sales results lower than expected. the minute it cam out the sales are weaker, the stocks came in. it happened with urban outfitters. same
