wilson, as darren wilson tried to get out of it, michael brown pushed him back in, punching him twice through the open window of the car. darren wilson feared the third punch could be fatal. at that point he struck michael brown. michael brown turned around and looked at darren wilson for all the world like demonic. and we think event that we know unfolded after that. that is the most striking. there's a lot to go through, and i think in the coming days or weeks as we read in detail we'll learn more. i don't think all of it has been released. certain more than we thought yesterday would be released has been. >> turning to the violent unrest, the reaction to this decision that we saw overnight. we know that governor nixon called on the national guard, and saw plenty of police it seemed, but not so much of the national guard. is there a reason for that? >> the national guard did turn up in the end actually. we did not see them during the height of the confrontation, which is pretty bad here, not as bad as where robert ray was on west florissant avenue. they came to protect the police st

let's get into this darren wilson testimony. i'll ask you, what stood out to you most about darren wilson's testimony to the grand jury? >> as you know, i stayed up most of the night reading it. i read it a couple times. i also read it against his police statement, which has also been released. there's a number of inconsistencies. the biggest thing that simprumpz out is prosecutors who aren't prosecuting. who let the target of the investigation come in in a very friendly, relaxed way and simply tell the story. there's absolutely zero cross-examination. cross-examination is the hall mark of our society. it's the crucible of truth. i don't say that to use flowery language. that's how we get at the truth. darren wilson, as you see in these pictures, for example, doesn't have any obvious injuries. maybe if you look closely, a tiny bit of pinkness on his face. that's completely inconsistent with his story that mike brown, with full force, he says, punched him twice solidly in the face. big, strong, mike brown. inconsistent with his i

these the procuters treated darren wilson with such kid gloves. their questions were all so softballs. he wasn't challenged, he wasn't pressed. it was just unbelievable to me the way they treated him in front of that grand jury, and so his testimony definitely wasn't tested, and when you hear about some of the things that he said about this aggression, and i also want to mention that he didn't provide the police with a statement. he wasn't asked to provide a statement. the only statement that he provided was to his attorney, which of course is privileged. i mean, i think that's very telling, so the prosecutor in front of the grand jury didn't have anything to compare his testimony to and when you hear about what he said, which he had a month to sort of come up with this story, again, it just wasn't tested. it seemed very fanciful, he talks about michael brown reaching into his waistband, when one of the grand jurors asked him whether or not he felt that michael brown had a gun, he says, i didn't really think about that. he talks about this aggress

lisa, you had a series of tweets today about darren wilson's testimony. what struck you about it and the way it was emitted to evidence in the grand jury proceeding? >> well, overall there was not a single tough question asked of him, and as a trial lawyer, so much jumped out at me as fertile ground for cross examination. for example, he says mike brown socked him hard in the face twice. he said, using the full force that mike brown had. mike brown being a pretty big, strong guy, and yet when you look at those photos, you really have to look carefully. this is probably the best photo where you can see a bit of pinkness and redness, but that is not consistent with being punched hard in the face a couple of times. it also doesn't make sense he'd be punched in the right side of his face when he's sitting in the driver's seat and mike brown is punching him right handed. the bigger picture is that darren wilson was not cross examined by these prosecutors. here they had their golden moment, defendant testifying, they could have asked him, for example, about how

we've seen darren wilson was able to come in. we had a lot of leaks about what people said the grand jury was doing or what they were not doing. so, this whole process has been clouded in confusion. i think confusion is there for a reason. because they want to put people off of keeping their minds on the focus of the main issue. which is not try mike brown, but deciding whether or not darren wilson should be held accountable for shooting mike brown. that is the question. so, when you have all the confusion that has been put out there, i think, it's been very difficult for people to understand the work of the grand jury. and people like lisa bloom have been very helpful to point out how this -- how the ways in which prosecutors and how the grand -- how these things have been fed to the grand jury in such a way that will create a certain kind of a scene that many of us believe will result in a nonindictment. so, i think it's been about confusion from day one. >> lisa, you have been very helpful in trying to understand how the proce

there will not be any charges against officer darren wilson. the grand jury making that decision, and the announcement was this evening. let's go now to get the latest from the streets of ferguson. cnn's stephanie elam is watching this all unfold, stephanie, what are you seeing? >> reporter: it's a much different scene than it was earlier. when we first got here after coming from clayton, there were about three businesses at the same time, they were all vandalized in this area. in fact, i'll just walk back to just show you. you've probably seen it if you've covered it. the ferguson market and liquor. this one was vandalized. i watched a man kick in the door of another wireless shop right here. and people run in there, and then i saw people come up to him, young people, young women, go up and say why are you doing this? our neighborhood? why would you do this where we live? this is wrong. and sort of self-policing. and i saw people leave the store after that. i'm taking my headset out because i'm hearing myself. but i'll put it in to hear you. b

officer darren wilson in his own words taken from the transcript of his grand jury testimony. the initial confrontation between the two started when wilson, inside his police car, asked brown and a friend to use the sidewalk. wilson says the conversation turned profane when brown told him "f what you have to say." the confrontation quickly turns physical when brown allegedly punches wilson in the face through the car window. wilson, who is 6'4", 210 pounds, says he felt dominated by the 6'6" teenager. "when i grabbed him, the only way i can describe it is a felt like a five-year-old holding on to hulk hogan. that's how big he felt and how small i felt from grasping his arm." in the three minute confrontation, a lot of confusi confusion, shouting and shattered glass. wilson said brown's face contorted with anger, that he looked like a demon. then in the moments leading up to the gunfire, wilson testifies he was punched several more times and told brown "get back, i'm going to shoot you. he, brown, grabs my gun and says you're too much of a [ bleep ] to shoot me." the gun goes d

they were carrying banners reading "arrest darren wilson." civil rights activist al sharpton condemned the grand jury decision. crowds gathered at the white house. and marched down u street carrying placards condemning the jury's verdict and support for the people of ferguson. the grand jury heard evidence for months weighing up whether to charm darren wilson. there was nine white people and three black drawn from the local community. they heard from 60 witnesses over a 3-month period. brown charged at officer wilson before the fatal shots were fired. others said brown was shot in the back. some were found not credible because they changed their account after forensic evidence revealed brown was not shot in the back >>> during four hours of testimony to the grand jury, darren wilson said brown approached and punched him whilst he was sitting in the patrol dar. darren wilson said: colin wilson said he got out of his car, shot at brown, and brown charged at him. wilson fired again. these pictures were released after the decision not to indict.

but i asked them what is next for darren wilson. is he going to try to be a police officer somewhere else? both his attorneys said it is highly unlikely. that is a possibility that he's going to have to find some other way to make a living. you're looking now at images of protesters in new york and national guard troops in fe ferguson. i want to show you those images. to our cnn analyst. jeff is a former federal prosecutor. also with us cnn political commentator and adviser van jones. jeff, let me start with you. i'm curious to hear your thoughts on darren wilson, what he said to george stephanopolous but i know you've been going over the testimony darren wilson gave to the grand jury. >> he's an excellent witness. that was a very calm, articulate, clear discussion of what happened. i can see why the grand jury was impressed by him. it was also not he very closely cross-examined and, in fact, george stephanopolous asked harder questions than the grand jury did, which is hard for me to believe that the prosecutors were so passive whe
