the third piece i have in this book is on the fall of fort fisher. germane to the war immediately after cedar creek. cedar creek occurring in october of 1864. this sums up the last of the major fighting in the deep south and the northern army seizing control across georgia and going up the east coast. one of the great names associated with the union naval success is doing the war is at role david dixon porter. porter was a key player at both new orleans and vicksburg. later, while sherman submerged georgia in complete war, a plan was devised by general butler and porter to take fort fisher by sending a boat with 215 tons andowder on to the water then to blast the powder, taking out the fort in one mighty explosion. fort fisher, south of wilmington, was important to the southern supply line. because of its unusual sand wall construction on the side that faced the water, it made it more difficult to penetrate. however, the powder plan, a , nottic design, failed only because the powder to not create the damage of which it was believed to be capable, but

i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>> the missouri grand jury deciding whether to indied a white police officer for killing an unarmed black teenager is expected to meet today. protesters marched last night in ferguson where 18-year-old michael brown was shot and killed by police officer darren wilson more than three weeks ago. ferguson is a town on edge. >> reporter: many who went to church in ferguson sunday got a special message with their sermon. >> we have vary varying views. >> reporter: the community is on edge once the 12 jurors make a decision on darren wilson. he shout 18-year-old michael brown in august. protesters have demonstrated every day since the shooting. some of the events have turned violent. residents are bracing for more protests regardless of what the grand jury decides. more than a thousand local law enforcement officers have received special training. local and national leaders are urging people to keep their demonstrations calm. >> we're calling upon our members, members of the community to respond to this decision in a nonviolent fashion. >> repor

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says it's triggering the weather. >> at one point we were tracking a typhoon, a super typhoon named nuri. it doesn't look like much but what was a beautiful typhoon is now weakening. however a lot of the moisture is moving to the north. that's where it hits the jet stream and then it explodes over the weekend. we'll have the giant storm system in the state. 50-foot-tall waves, weekend gusts of hurricane strength, and we'll have an impact on our weather in the united states. it helps to buckle the jetstream. a huge ridge over the west. it will bring warm and dry weather to. the east of that a huge dip in the jet stream. it's going to take over all of the united states with some of the coldest and a taste of winter for a lot of folks. it really starts on monday. by tuesday, lots of highs in the 20s and 30s. you'll feel it first in the front rage of the plains. by the end of the week, the entire eastern united states with a feeling of winter, and, yes, snow will be coming along with this. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. >>>

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz says another storm is on tap for thursday. >> it's really been a surreal scene around buffalo, especially just south of town. and this is the perfect setup for a huge lake-effect snowstorm. we've got mild lake temperatures. and mild this time of the year means mid-40s, but we've got air moving over the lake that's in the teens. really cold air both on the surface and aloft. and the winds haven't changed direction. that's the key. when you have winds persist eptly, especially right along that long fetch of the lake, it grabs the moisture. there's instability there. and it just dumps it downstream. and if those winds don't change direction, you can add huge totals, in this case up to 70 inches of snow. we're talking six feet. this is not the only event we'll be seeing. the snow shifting northward this morning. as we head toward the end of the week, especially on thursday, another lake-effect snow event. we could see another feet in the buffalo area. a lot of these same towns could be approaching 100 inches of snow for the week as a whol

meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz is following the fast-moving storm. >> we've been talking about it for a couple of days, and now it's a storm. it's a quick moving one but impacting us right through the holiday, and it's changing plans, and we've seen that already. so moving up the east coast as we head through the morning, by the time we get toward 9:00 a.m. on wednesday, we're looking at heavy snow west of i-95. that will be stretching p to the suburbs outside of new york city. east of i-95 you've got heavy rainfall and wind. and, of course, it's sloppy and quite a bit of impact. heading into the evening, heavier snow from the philadelphia area, westchester county reaching up across connecticut into boston and new england. so by midnight toward the predawn hours the last of the snow will be exiting maine. we have winter storm warnings extending from maine right on down into north carolina. so a big portion of the east coast all impacted again. that's where the biggest snow totals are going to be. looking at a widespread 6 to 10, at times as much as 12 inches of sn

. >> meteorologist eric fisher of our boston station wbz said that the bitter cold and heavy snow isn't going away anytime soon. >> scenes of winter all over the place working its arctic way through. snowstorms continue through the u.p. of michigan as we go through this morning and into the afternoon. this is where the biggest snow totals will be for tuesday. lake-effect will enhance the snowfall as we head this afternoon and tonight. that's where the biggest totals are going to be. with some spots close to a foot as we get close to the upper peninsula. this is where the most difficult travel will be for today. now, in terms of the cold, our winter advisories and windchills, montana, wyoming, windchills as low as 35 below zero over the next couple of days. in terms of high temperatures, just the air looking at single digits, billings and cheyenne. denver a little warm. probably staying in the teens there. in fact, the temperatures take four degrees, five degrees off. probably going to be the actual high. on wednesday, continue to watch the air move its way eastward. 30s for the high in
