cnn's rosa flores joins us from mexico. rosa, seems like the situation continues to escalate there. >> reporter: it does continue to intensify, pamela. as you mentioned it's been more than six weeks and no trace of those missing students so as the tensions, the protests and the violence continue to escalate in the streets of guerrero, no one knows who's in charge of law and order. it looks and sounds like a war zone. but it's the clash between student protesters and federal police in the guerrero state capital in which a government building was torched, all in response to the disappearance of 43 college students more than five weeks ago. the situation is very tense right now between the protesters and federal police. now take a look on one side of this bridge are federal police officers. they've been firing rubber bullets. on the other side, you've got the protesters. they've been firing back with fireworks, rocks, you name it, sticks, and it's not stopping. this boiled over tension fueled by inconclusive news of the wherea

brian flores will have more on the race coming up at 6:30. the votes are still being counted in a tight race for san jose mayor. dave cortese facing off against city councilman sam liccardo. janine de la vega tells us that liccardo currently holds a slight lead. >> reporter: yes, he does. but right now we are at the santa clara county registrar's office. i just spoke with the registrar of voters. they stopped counting at 4:00 a.m. with 100% of the precincts reporting. it shows sam liccardo has a lead. so there is just a 2% difference there. so there are still thousands of ballots, absentee ballots that need to billion counted. right now this is too close to call. last night at liccardo's event his supporters were watching the event and cheering. they have been neck and neck in the mayor seat. liccardo's aid say they are being cautiously optimistic. they have not officially declared victory. now again we learned that those ballots will not be counted over night and instead that process will start later today. we have reached out to cortese and

rosa flores joins us now. what's next for these families? >> reporter: you know, it's a tough call for these families. they, of course, have said that the only thing that they want right now is their children back. but here is how outrageous and crazy this situation has become, anderson. during that protest, two protesters were allegedly arrested. then the protesters allegedly kidnapped a police officer and with a human rights group present, they swapped. that gives you a taste of the violence and how the situation continues to escalate. >> the mayor and his wife, the ones who allegedly orchestrated this entire thing, they're still in custody, right? >> they are. they're still in custody. authorities are questioning them. no word on when charges may be dropped -- or charges may be made. and they haven't made a comment. so it's one of the mysteries, because we don't know exactly what they did or exactly why they were detained four days after these students went missing, these people went on the run. and then it took police a while to find the
