the l.a. county jail. with an annual budget in the hundreds of millions, overcrowding continues to be a growing concern. >> as you can see, i've got concrete bars. you know, i don't have any place to expand. i can't make another cell. that's the achilles heel of jail systems everywhere, is how many inmates you have. that's your clients. >> the los angeles county jail has a higher inmate to guard ratio than any other county jail in the country. sheriff's deputies have to deal with the daily threat of getting stabbed, having feces thrown at them, and even contracting aids. for some deputies the stress is too much to handle. >> we've had guys come in just a day, day or two, and they look around and they're like i'm out of here. they'll give us the keys, and they won't even say they're out of here. next day we'll come in and they'll be gone. i'll go down and check it out. they'll be like, yeah, he resigned or -- because this is where you actually figure out if you really want to do this or not. >>

and lastly, the crown jewel of the l.a. county jail system is the north county correctional facility, or nccf, which houses murderers, rapists, and drug offenders. >> we find that the linear style jail really doesn't work for us anymore, and what we have here is we have more of a podular design with the staff stations in the middle and then the inmates around the outside. >> a single facility comprised of five jails housing 3,800 inmates, nccf was designed in 1983. nccf first made headlines in march of 1990, when the first president bush helped dedicate the jail's opening. >> one of this nation's founding fathers said, "if men were angels, no government would be necessary." well, i'm sure that no one here would suggest that men were angels. and that's why there's government, to write the laws we live by. and correctional facilities, like this one, for the people who break them. >> for ten years this facility had no major incidents. then, on april 24th, 2000, violence erupted. >> everybody get out! >> it was 1:00 in the afte

basicallyeles, where a little south of l.a.. for those of you who understand in. history, l.a. is unique immigration history. as late as 1960 l.a. was what it had been for the 20th century. ofity largely made up midwesterners who migrated to the sunbelt. the mexican presence never disappeared from l.a.. the majority was native born. after 1965 the population changed quickly and strikingly. the act removed immigration quotas. hart cellar had far-reaching effect on immigration to the u.s.. in initiated significant democrat big ships and gradual changes. as a result, the foreign-born population blew up in l.a.. no one else had in urban areas foreign population grow so exponentially. 9% of the population in 1962 35% . this has reconnected contemporary los angeles to its mexican roots. notions that have been typically whitewashed over the years. history has returned. as late of the 20th century and 21st century and 21st century, l.a. is an increasingly mexican city. there are two keys to understanding how los angeles .ecame a majority minority city there is intense gentrification. s

l.a. and the neighboring koreatown burned, choked, and wailed. i was literally born again in the ashes of this nation's first bogus race war putting minorities against each other in the inner cities of los angeles. i felt a new calling. 18-year-old eddie lee. ignored my plea's on the second night -- ignored by piece on the second night of the riots. i hear him back in. if you don't speak up, who else will? >> excuse me. all right. basically, these words were printed in a korean journal on the 20th anniversary of the riots. he wrote this when he was 84 years old. certain versions of them and their experiences are represented at the exclusion of other more diverse experiences. if korean americans are not representing themselves, no one is going to. what i want to do for the remainder of this presentation, i want to elaborate and talk about his career as a writer and his journalistic project. i want to -- this is about a very selective description of episodes from his career. not sot so much

back to l.a. your asign. at the "national journal" brought you -- your assignment at the "national journal" brought you back this way. glad to have you back in l.a. we started the conversation with the chairman. you said you're not buying what you thought of spin? >> i think the presentation of the house is kind of a chamber of bipartisanship really. i mean, we are looking at the highest level of party line voting really ever recorded going back to the first congress did es. today in our/x -- congresses. today in our first -- in first congresses, there's no overlap in the chamber. almost every voting record is more liberal than any republican. it is going to be difficult especially after the election which carved out what was left of that democratic kind of more moderate to conservative vote where republicans usually go to work with democrats. those were in many cases the people who lost. the likelihood is that the chambers are going to be more polarized. i think you'll see more conflict than not. >> there ar

l.a. is a big city for food trucks. they are really, really starting to grow. >> i feel like in this economy, you really have to make your fortune for your self. >> the truck is a much smaller value. >> for example. >> you are all in. it is a lot less than brick-and-mortar. melissa: how do you break that down? >> everything that includes the truck. melissa: you bought your trucks, right? >> you are actually buying something of value. you can build it to your specs. melissa: yeah. >> why is it more important? we can go to the markets. melissa: you have gone on to have a brick-and-mortar store out in l.a. >> we have. melissa: what makes these guys different as entrepreneurs? >> great passion. staying married to it and keeping that momentum is very hard. it is contagious. they are all replicas of them. they have that high energy. they have the people skills. melissa: it is a pretty specific concept. you took in $250,000 in sales. what makes this concept for off that much cash or says other businesses? >> the quality of pro
