matt delucia is live with this update. what do you know? >> i spoke to the abington fire marshal and he told me the fire was caused by an air conditioner space heater one of the units that are in the back of the building here and that is what caused the fire. it malfunctioned and the flames started coming out. heavy smoke coming from the back of the original building. that is the building that you see right here behind us and there is still a lot of fire department activity here for the moment. the fire is out. it has been for a little while. the fire started about 4:00 this morning. and what we're told right now is that the northbound lanes of route 611 here, old york road still shut done for the moment but i'm told it should reopen within the next 30 minutes or so. you see they do have that ladder truck up there right now and inspecting the property making sure everything is okay. as for damage, we're told that it is mostly smoke and water damage. the damage was contained to the one room that contained that heater and air conditioner. so,

matt delucia is on the scene there in concord township. matt, what is going on there? >> the hotel guests that are back inside were forced out right around midnight because carbon monoxide was found inside the building here at the best western, along baltimore pike. we'll show you video of what it looked like. within the past couple hours as firefighters vented the gas, the cause was found a malfunctioning heater and the readings were high enough to keep all the guests out of the building for a few hours. this is right at concordville inn to give you some perspective. the carbon monoxide was discovered quickly enough so no one was hospitalized. because it is very cold more and more people are running the heaters and that has been found to be the cause of many of these carbon monoxide leaks, just like the ones here, especially when it happens in your home. you may not know about it, unless you have an alarm. i sat down with fire commissioner derek sawyer from philadelphia to talk about those dangers. i'll have that coming up in the next 30 minutes. for now i'm live in c

nbc 10's matt delucia is live in center city this morning. matt, you've got some new information to share with us. what do you know? >> reporter: it's deja vu out here. we were doing this back in august, trying to remove some of these letters. you mentioned, i have been getting some new information. i've been talking with police and workers out here, who are getting ready to take the remaining letters off of this building. they tell me that they have pretty much ready to go. the helicopter is ready. so they're waiting for some more daylight and that should be happening momentarily when they move that helicopter in to hoist the letters off the building. i'm going to give you a look at 15th and jfk. this is the area that they're going to be putting the letters down. they will be hoisted down to this level, put on the flat bed trucks and taken away. as such, you notice no vehicles are moving around city hall right now. so the roads are now closed. that's a very important note here, and they should be closed until about 4:00 today. this is a flui

nbc 10 matt delucia is live for us and, matt, a reminder to all of us this time of year when people start trying to heat their homes or other properties, carbon monoxide could be a problem. >> yeah, we heard from fire commissioner derek sawyer over in philadelphia about heaters being a big cause of this. i'll tell you right here at the concord township best western, the guests are back inside, but quite a wakeup call around midnight when all the hotel guests were forced to evacuate because carbon monoxide was found inside the building. we'll go ahead and show you some video of what this looked like in the past few hours as firefighters vented that gas. the cause was found to be a malfunctioning heater. the readings were high enough to keep all the guests out of the building for a few hours. they were staying at a bar just across the parking lot. this is right at the concordville inn just to give you some perspective here. the carbon monoxide was discovered quickly enough so no one had to be hospitalized. because it is cold more people are running the heaters and that is a major contributo
